I thought the scouting reports were that Rutherford couldn't stick in center and didn't have enough power to play a corner. That doesn't sound like someone I want at 3.

Never been a fan of college bats unless the talent was overwhelming like Tex or Weiters. It would however make a lot of sense to add a more advanced player that we can add to the glut of talent we already have around the mid minors. I cant see the Braves passing on Hansen and Puk. I would add Groome but I think he is a near lock to go #1. They are a scouts have wet dreams about pitchers like this. I like Blake Rutherford. Thats such a a big league prospect name.

There have been so many college bats recently that have turned out to be serious talents, though.

Braun, Tulowitzki, Longoria, Posey, Donaldson, Goldschmidt, Bryant, Schwarber, Pollock, Rendon, Conforto, Trea Turner, etc...the idea that college bats have a lower ceiling is really just a myth. Not every draft has a guy of that caliber, but many do. If there is a college bat worthy of the #3 pick, I have no qualms at all with taking it.

There are "maybes" and "ifs" with every prospect.

And mid-February is far too early to be narrowing down draft preferences. We're going to get 3-4 more talented kids with high ceilings to add to the (ever-growing) pile. I'll let the next three months play out a bit and see who separates themselves before deciding on preferences. Several of the ones we've already got came out of nowhere much later than this point in the early spring of last year.

Corey Ray was 5-6 today with another homerun. His stock is goin sky high.

One sweet swing!

I love Ray's swing, but it's a little long, and he's had some K issues in the past. If he can cut down on his K's this year and improve a little on his BB rate while maintaining the power he's shown so far, I'm all for taking him.

Does the Fowler signing quiet the speculation about Ender Inciarte to the Cubbies?

They were probably waiting for Fowler to sign before they traded for an upgrade in CF. In the end they got in insanely good deal. Now they can flip Soler or Baez for a starting pitcher.

Rangers give up No. 19 pick for Desmond, but gained No. 30 pick when they lost Gallardo. Nationals gain No. 29 pick for losing Desmond. Net gain, nowhere.

Coppy mentioned again today that he would prefer a college bat, saying we are loaded with arms and the track record for college hitters is good.

I really think Corey Ray could be a good fit for us, but it got me thinking about next year. We are still going to be loaded with pitching then. As of now, which I admit is WAY too early, the top two college bats in next year's draft appear to be Vanderbilt OF Jeren Kendall and Florida C JJ Schwarz -- two big need positions. Pretty exciting to think about the future.

One good thing about a college bat is they often sign for less than slot, which would allow the Braves to draft and sign someone at pick 40 for mid-first round money.
