2014 Draft:
Sean Newcomb
Touki Toussaint
Braxton Davidson

2015 Draft:
Dansby Swanson
Kolby Allard
Mike Soroka
Austin Riley

Those are the guys we got in the 1st round of the past 2 drafts (obviously including guys we traded for). Those are some very talented guys that could be used as trade chips to improve the big league team, or could help the big league team themselves. Very interested to see what the draft will look like this year.

I like this post. I didn't really look at it this way, but that's massive talent. The 2015 draft is incredible. Every single one of those guys has the chance to be an above-average big league player.
 
Keith Law's newest rankings are out. Interesting note that he says Kyle Lewis projects to stay up the middle in CF.

Law does say Lewis swings and misses a lot. Doesn't he have more walks than strikeouts this year?

21 strikeouts to 38 BBs in 165 PAs. He's striking out a little more than one out of every 8 trips to the plate. It's about a 13% strikeout rate. He's walking in 23% of his PAs. Those are really good numbers.

So far he has 38 BBs and 21 Ks, but that doesn't mean he doesn't swing and miss a lot. He is currently putting up a 1.400 OPS, so I imagine a lot of pitchers in the Southern Conference are being very careful pitching to him.

He struck out 41 times in 226 ABs last year which prompted questions about his swing and miss, and has 21 Ks in 121 ABs this year, so it's not like he isn't K'ing at a pretty high rate even while performing exceptionally well. I'm just not sure how a 13% K rate can be an area of concern when the guy is hitting with as much power as he currently is.

For comparison, Bryant had a 14% K rate his final year at San Diego to go along with his 1.300 OPS, and it's not like the WCC is a Power 5 conference. The difference is Bryant was a stud from day 1 in college, where Lewis has gotten better substantially better every year. However, I would expect that from an elite talent that didn't focus on baseball until he was 17/18.

If Groome is gone by pick #3 (he will be) I would love to see the Braves draft Lewis.
 
Getting Lewis would calm down my anger over the Heyward situation. (Yes I know what we've gotten in return for Heyward since... but he was my favorite ballplayer for many years next to Chipper and Tron).

Another young buck amazing athlete from a suburban Atlanta area.

Also, he could be ready by 2017-2018 with Albies and Swanson. We just need a way to move Olivera and Markakis.

An Inciarte, Mallex, Lewis OF next year would be a pitcher's dream.

And then we have the International Signings coming in as well. :pound:
 
I'm all for using the 3rd pick on Kyle Lewis. I see more projection in him than I do Corey Ray at this point. I saw Buddy Reed this past weekend against Mississippi State, and I would pass on him this high. Nick Senzel is the only other college bat to consider.

My preference would be:
Lewis
Rutherford
Moniak
Senzel

How would you project the 2017-2018 lineup then?
 
Keith Law said today that he sees Corey Ray as a 20/20 guy who hits .280/.340. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

I'd definitely take it, but I'd like to get someone even better, and I think Lewis can be better than that. I also think Rutherford can be better than that, though that's obviously down the road.

I would be fine with Ray, though.
 
Here's what I don't understand about Keith Law's rankings. He has Corey Ray #3 and calls him the safest hitter in the draft with a power and speed combination that is rare, but he also cites his inability to play center field and his struggles with left handed pitching.

IMO, if he can't play CF and struggles with left handed pitching, he's not a top 3 pick in this draft.

Yet, he has Blake Rutherford 4th on his list and calls him the most advanced bat in the draft, college or high school, and says he doesn't see anyone else with his hit tool.
 
When he talks about safe he probably means their likelihood to reach the majors as opposed their likelihood to be a good major league player. Some people are weird like that and think a first round pick isnt a bust if they have like 12 innings with a 5+ ERA in the majors just because they reached the majors.

He did downplay the concerns vs LHP in his chat yesterday.
