This is kind of what I've been getting at. I don't think it's worth it to try to devise a scheme to get a top talent to fall to you at 40 because it's unlikely that guy will fall all the way there, and there are multiple teams probably trying to figure out the same kind of scheme. Just take the best player where you're drafting each time, and you'll be fine.

But I am not paying over slot for Groome either. If he wants north of 6.5, then I think you can do better by spreading the risk out over other picks.

Stole my post. I appreciate any attempt to think outside the box, but don't get too clever. It's the #3 pick- choose a really good player.

Then question becomes who do you trade for pitching? Our trade assets are basically just pitching. It's difficult to add quantity and quality through trades. The Shelby Miller is a lone exception.

I have advocated signing at least one front line starter in free agency. I understand that it's probably the riskiest move you can make, but if we want to competitive in the next couple years, then it's basically a must.

I think James Shields is someone worth targeting this winter if we can get the money right. The Pads will likely be trying to move him if they aren't already. Seems to be having a nice rebound season.

Ideally, I think going the Royals/Pirates route is the best regarding FA pitchers.

I agree, but if he's demanding more than #3 slot money, then he's essentially saying he's going to college. No one will give him that once he drops to 3, and while he's been called the best talent in the draft, he's not a Bryce Harper-type talent who can do that. I can't imagine we would have to pay him more than #3 slot money. Again, nobody at all in last year's draft got more than that.

I've heard Keith Law talk about this in the past, but with this draft system, you should never sign someone for anything more than the slot value of the following pick. It makes sense to me. You tell a player that if you don't take them, the most they'd get is the slot of the next pick. So that could be a decent way to save some money with the third pick.

I agree with this. To me, the highest upside picks at 3 if Kyle Lewis goes #2 would be Jason Groome and Riley Pint.

With that said, my gosh Nick Senzel is good with the bat!! I think the big reason why he doesn't have more home runs is that he is a line drive hitter. He's smoking doubles that are hitting the wall in the air.

Question, if we were to draft groome and he not sign, wouldn't we get the fourth pick in next year's draft? Isn't it a better draft?!?

Looking ahead, watching Tanner Houck from Missouri tonight. That kid is good!! Mississippi State finally got to him in the 7th and 8th innings but still only has 3 runs on him.

Haha this is awesome. It would never happen, but I wouldn't be totally against it.

Draft someone at 3 we have no intention of signing, spread our draft pool throughout the other picks in the top 10 rounds, and then likely have two picks in the top four in a better draft next year. I know there are holes in that plan, but it's kind of funny to think about.

One thing to keep in mind is you lose the pool money associated with the slot of a player that doesn't sign.

The SEC is as talented in baseball as they are football. SEC Draft prospects for this year with their current BA ranking:

1. AJ Puk, LHP, Florida
5. Nick Senzel, 3B, Tennessee
13. Dakota Hudson, RHP, Mississippi State
22. Bryan Reynolds, OF, Vanderbilt
23. Jordan Sheffield, RHP, Vanderbilt
27. Robert Tyler, RHP, Georgia
31. Logan Shore, RHP, Florida
47. Anfernee Grier, OF, Auburn
66. Jake Fraley, OF, LSU
71. Zack Brown, RHP, Kentucky
73. Braden Webb, RHP, South Carolina
74. Dane Dunning, RHP, Florida
75. Zach Jackson, RHP, Arkansas
76. Ben Bowden, LHP, Vanderbilt
80. Nick Banks, OF, Texas A&M
81. Kyle Cody, RHP, Kentucky

I'd honestly hate if we take Senzel. I'm not very high on him and there are so much better players than him that we can take at #3

He is a very good college player, but his skill set does not equate to a No. 3 pick. The Braves say they finally have some money to spend, so spend it. Isn't Swanson evidence enough that you spend what it takes to wrap up a truly elite player?

Wait, what does Swanson have to do with spending money.. that has anything to do with drafting Senzel

Lewis is my guy. I think he'd make the transition relatively quick. I'm guessing the Reds are jackholes and go after him first. But if we are lucky, we have to do it.

Now I'm not upset with Groome or anyone else in the top 10 for the matter, but it's important we make a good choice. I like Ray a lot as well.
