Fair enough.

I'm not sure exactly what Fueled by Sports is, but that seems quite a bit optimistic. A guy who currently has grades of 55 or better basically across the board and projects to have 4 tools that are 65 would be the no-doubt, undisputed #1 overall pick. I don't think any of the most trusted national scouting guys/sites has grades like that on Ray.

The 65 on his fielding projection alone gives me pause. There is just about universal consensus on Ray that he will have to play LF eventually, and that's not what happens to a guy with a 65 fielding grade and a 55 arm.

Anyway, they still only give his speed a current plus grade, and even they give Lewis the higher ceiling.

Not to mention they have Lewis and Ray at the same level of contact. Not sure why he's trying to claim a plus hit tool for Ray and Lewis only having Power and then turning around and linking a random website I've never heard of that has them both rated the same. And yeah, I haven't seen anyone reputable have Ray that highly rated on defense, and a 55 grade on his in game power right now is crazy high.

ok, new approach.

I think we need to get young pitching this draft.
We have all but locked up a good pick for next year... then we need to trade FF/JT/and Viz and really assert ourselves to be terrible in 2017 as well. That way we draft Bats in 2017 and have a Beer party in 2018 Draft... Then the trade pieces/young pitching are ready to compete. 2018 will be good, 2019 will be dominance!!!!!!

Interesting developments here. This is very much in line with what Bill Shanks mentioned yesterday about the Braves plans.

BA scouting report on Ray says scouts have few questions about Ray's bat, feeling that he will at the very least be an average hitter. Scouts are split 50/50 on his defense.

So if Groome falls too far then he will go Juco and we can get him next year with our #1 pick.. I like this plan. we can get Lewis and Groome!! then maybe Beer in 2018

Smooth move by Groome. There's always a risk with a pitcher taking that route (the saga of Matt Harrington), but the JC option would keep him eligible for the 2017 draft.

it really is the best option IMO.. if he doesn't have some allegiance with a college.. then go year by year and try to max your dollar. betting on yourself!!

only concern I would have would be level of play hit... if he struggles even for 2 or 3 games, he is going to take a bigger hit for that over being at a major Uni...

disagree. He's a pitcher. He's one throw from TJ. If you get offered 5 million take it and start making more money. The real money is in getting FA dollars, not fighting over 1 million now. There is a lot of risk in pitching for free.

For some reason I get the Victor Roache feeling from Lewis, and Roache has struggled in the minors. Can't fight the production though...hes been doing it for 2+ years and in the Cape league.

Very interesting comparison, and I vaguely remember Roache being a name folks wanted in the 2012 draft. He played in the the same conference as Lewis, seemed to be injured his junior year, and put up a 1.216 OPS with 30 HRs his sophomore year. He was drafted by the Brewers 28th overall and has posted a very mediocre .739 OPS in 3.5 minor league seasons.

Lewis just posted a 1.266 OPS as a junior with many more walks than Roache, about the same number of Ks, and a lot fewer HRs. If Lewis gets picked #3 and ends up with a mid-700s OPS after 3+ seasons of minor league ball like Roache, he will be a pretty bad bust for the Braves.

Agreed. Sometimes I wonder what these kids are thinking. What are you going to do with $5M that you can't do with $3M?

My advice: If someone offers to make you financially stable for the rest of your life, make that deal. Period. Don't get greedy and hold out for more. I've seen folks with small businesses get stung by the same thought process when deciding not to sell their business for a few million only to have it all fall apart within the next couple years.

a lot of times it's probably the agents, with less to lose, urging them to shoot for more.

oh no... I didn't mean to say he should go to Juco.. just have that threat to go to Juco. it increases his leverage.

Groome has probably thrown a number out there.. He is now backing his number up with the proposition of going to a junior college and being right back in the FO faces next year with the same demands or higher..

But, one point on your comment.. if a pitcher is one pitch away from disaster, then wouldn't fighting over 1 million now be in his best interest over waiting for 6 + years to hit FA?
