Hope everyone who lost power has it resumed soon. I konw houses down south aren't all insulated well for this kind of weather. Hell I don't think my Parents hosue is insulated that well. My house is but it's 3 degrees here. So that only helps so far.
 
Winter weather is absolutely the hardest type of weather to predict... especially ice. If you're off by just a degree or two in your forecast, it can drastically change things. And frankly, we are just not good enough (humans or computers) to consistently predict something like temperatures to that level of accuracy.

They can handle a week of this easily. They are insulated pretty well.

Lots but not all.

I mean I have lived a number of places, houses have all kinds of different precautions. I live in a zone where the minimum recommendation is high as the maximum recommendation in parts of th esouth. And floors and crawlspaces are much higher.

I also know that some people in the south live in homes without proper furnaces etc. Because I know people who booked air bnbs at places that didn't have furnaces.
