Ways to deal with the 2020 social climate and stress... any players?

Picked up hobbies?

Exercise?

Learn any new skills or reading ?

Anyone else getting to things they have been putting off?

getting to the beach or your favorite place more? I do want one more beach trip at some point this winter.

Mentioned to the wife the other day I hadn't felt this stress free in years. Can slow my mind down, and not have the hamster running around the wheel 24\7 and feel more in control

We booked a trip out west to a river with no cell phone signal for our anniversary as when we ran down options, it just seemed like a perfect fit for this phase in our life.

Have done a ton of travel since I can work remotely. Seen a lot of the country and the outdoors this year as I decide where we plan to move next year

I recently realized I was forcing a bit too much family time on the kids. They get some gaming time in the evenings now.

I'm using that time to learn to code in Python. It's surprisingly fun and addictive. I feel like a badass when I actually get something to work right.

Not commuting 40 miles each way through Atlanta traffic has done plenty to lower my stress level. Now I need to exercise because I'm getting fat(ter.)

Up until a few weeks ago when it started getting cold, I had become quite the runner since Covid hit. I’m definitely in the best shape of my life. The privileges of remote work.

Otherwise, we are really enjoying being back in Utah close to family. California gets a bad wrap on this board, but I really enjoy living there. But this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to live close to family for an extended period.

This past year has probably been one of the most productive and healthiest (mentally/physically) of my life. I am eager to go back in the office to see coworkers again, but I hope culturally WFH becomes a greater presence.

I love Python. It’s our main scripting language in the National Weather Service. Although for massive data set/grid calculations it can be a bit slow. That’s why we use it in conjunction with FORTRAN. Even though FORTRAN is an ancient language it is crazy efficient with massive calculations. That’s why most weather models have FORTRAN as their base code.

That's great to hear. I'm in QA so Python looked helpful for testing automation, but I'm seeing more and more stories about how widely it's used. I'm stunned by you guys using FORTRAN. Wow that was old when I was a kid. Cool stuff.

I don't know if you're on the weather side or the tech side, but are you familiar with the guys at Firsthand Weather? They're a two man team but they're incredibly good at forecasting.

I’m on the weather side but these days we have to be almost just as proficient in minor coding as the science at the NWS. These days weather is almost just as much computer systems as forecasting. I know of the Firsthand Weather guys but I haven’t really examined their products too much.

I moved to Cumming in 3rd grade. There was one stop light, 1 black family in the whole county, and the KKK still had an annual March in the town square. Crazy how fast that area changed. Shoot, we got our first black football player when I was in high school... that was like 1997
