Student loans

Not difficult to see where academics get their entitlement from ...

I doubt I’d agree with much of what this Fischer King fellow has to say, but I think this very closely aligns with my feelings on student loan debt. I think allowing those in need to discharge the debt in bankruptcy like they do all other bad investments would be a better solution than blanket forgiveness. Those who can pay will pay, those who can’t will face some consequences but not be stuck with it after they’ve already crashed.

To wit:

This was a very common refrain during the aftermath of the 2016 election, and it’s always been wrong. There are frankly some very vocal people on both sides, and while there are certainly adults who accept it and move on, it’s just not true that the Right doesn’t melt down over things like this.

I think it’s also worth noting that there’s a pretty sizable difference between say a straight conservative’s view on Obergefell and a female liberal’s view on overturning Roe v. Wade. While we might have some significant disagreements regarding abortion, I hope nobody is too far down the rabbit hole to not at least understand the core differences here.

Why such a lack of compassion on student loan debt?

—————

There’s nothing “compassionate” about A wanting to take B’s money to pay off C’s debt.

I have great compassion for people who lack the ability to think on their own and fell for the university industrial complex that you need a degree to get a job that will pay. When more people would be better off knowing skills like plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, etc.

So now the plumber and electrician have to pay off the useless degree they wisely avoided?

Apparently credibly accused creepy joe has settled on forgiving $10K of student debt for those making under 150K.

This strikes me as too much forgiveness .

Calibrating it to income is the way to go.

But the cutoff should be much lower. Maybe 50K.

No one making over 100K (with likely significant income growth in their futures) should be getting debt forgiveness.

While I think what is coming down is too generous, it is worth recalling how crazy the forgiveness proposals from the Sanders/Warren wing of the party were.

hes gotta protect his base.

at least we don't have an inflation problem.

I am still not clear on why student debt is more special than auto, home, or credit debt, though (just kidding, I know why)

Is this a one off? Can I go rack up some student loans and have them forgiven next year?

clearly the precedent is set.

the universities now have a green light to keep ripping off students

the students now have a green light to not pay back their loans

of course the middle class and poor are stuck with the bill, like always

yeah good question. There seems to be an element of unfairness to future borrowers. Not to mention past borrowers who have paid back their loans.

I wonder about the Sanders/Warren people. Do they think. Warren is often held up as a serious policy wonk. Challenge. I have yet to see an idea from her that stands up to serious scrutiny.

Hard to imagine it'll be the last time we hear of this bad idea. Especially with the hysterical responses coming from some corners, acting like a means-tested $10K forgiveness is a slap in the face.

"$10k ?!?!? You think that and a job are enough to pay for my Master's in Pansexual Gender Queer Authors of the Early Victorian?"

Given the direction of Biden's approval ratings, I wouldn't rule it out

I think what he is doing is both bad policy and bad politics. When someone insists on being dumb my instinct is to get some popcorn and sit back and enjoy. The world can be a hard place when you insist on doing dumb ****.

I do not understand what Biden sees as the upshot here. He’s already going to get the vote from the people he’s subsidizing with this.

This won’t go over well with blue collar workers and doesn’t move the needle with Hispanics.

It’s also not solving a problem. It likes fighting a wild fire with a single bucket of water.

I truly mean this when I say I don’t care what party that person comes from, but we need to do better than this idiot as president.

Well that's why he has not done anything yet. The socialists of the party are demanding it and he knows it's a losing issue. Honestly if I was his advisor I would say go ahead and do it, its not like the right wing would give him any credit for resisting. They will campaign on it anyways in 2024 whether he does it or not.
