Don't see him being anywhere close to Harper. He's only batting about .280 this year... 1068 OPS... sure that'd be awesome for MLB... but that's not very special for a college player.

They don't usually, but it's been a long time since we've seen a college hitter with that kind of production his entire career. And with the improvements you usually see in a player's junior season, there's a chance he absolutely goes off next year and posts something like a 1.500 OPS.

I will take that hitter all day every day and stick him in LF if I have to. Even at 1-1.

Honestly, if he doesn't go 1 and the Braves wouldn't take him there, then I'd much rather slip to 4 or 5 and get him than whoever we might grab at 1.

BABIP is .262 and he's not seeing anything to hit. I agree I wouldn't take him at 1 if he repeats these numbers next year, but I'm expecting a huge jump. The low K's and huge power are a big reason why I like him so much.
 
And no, I don't think he's Harper. But while Harper did show more power in his year in JUCO than Beer did his freshman year, Beer struck out a lot less and walked more at a higher level. Of course, Harper was also really a senior in HS so it's still not entirely comparable.

To be honest, I don't know much about next year's draft. It's possible there are guys I eventually like more than Beer. But I don't think you can go wrong with Beer at any draft slot.

It's literally never happened though. We will see what happens.
 
I didn't mean to compare beer and Harper. Saying there hasn't been a pure hitting talent since Harper. Now Bryant would be one so I should say since Bryant. But beer was possible 1-1 before commiting. That is why you don't see college hitters going 1-1. Usually talents like Beer go from high school. Beer might crash. But if he doesn't. I want to be there to get him
 
And guys like Bryant and Schwarber are looking much better than guys like Appel, Kolek, Aiken, and Rodon who went before them. I know typically college hitters, or really any hitters, who don't also bring a lot of defensive value don't generally go 1-1. But that doesn't mean it's not the best pick.

If a guy has a clearly legit power bat in college and carries little risk offensively (which I think fits Beer), then I don't really care that much about what else he brings so long as he isn't 250 pounds and an utter statue.

Correct. I still don't think these draft rankings value big, relatively safe bats as much as they should. Sure, a HS kid with 5 tools could end up being a 6+ WAR player, and a big bat with little else to offer may only have a ceiling of 3-4 WAR, but it's a pretty safe 3-4 WAR.

Schwarber, even with bad defense, was basically a 3 WAR player as a rookie. So far this year his defense has been too bad and he isn't hitting yet, but he falls more in the 250 pound statue category. I don't think Beer is that bad defensively.

I think they drafted him as a bat primarily without much hope he would stick at catcher -- thought they did try it.

For some reason I thought Beer might have caught some games but that seems to be a mistaken belief.

I don't disagree he was drafted for his bat. But it would be unprecedented for Beer to go 1-1 next year. Not that it is a wrong or anything if you believe in that bat.

J-up was drafted 1-1 because of his bat, not his glove. he was not projected to stay at SS. generally guys of Beer's ilk don't go to a 4 year college... they get drafted out of HS. I think passing on a guy with his hitting potential because statistics say it doesn't happen is pure lunacy. You find a place for Beer to play.

Needs to come with changeable attachments. You know "Coppy giving Snit the hook." Or Coppy cutting ties with HO. Or Coppy at the stadium giving hand outs...

He could give signs from the stands depending on which prosthetic he's wearing.

He could also star in the next Fugitive remake
