Tax Bill

Not really—I'd say it's pretty two-thousand-and-late, actually. En vogue right now is the blind über-patriot boner you're so fond of brandishing. I'd worry about testicular torsion, reaching so hard to pat America on its collective back while fapping to its Great Glory.

America is amazing. We are the greatest nation in the world because we are the most prosperous.

Of course they shouldn't—it'd be illogical under the logic of capitalism. That's why I think the fundamental logic by which our institutions are organized and ordered is the problem.

Regardless of its sophistic, self-serving "state of nature" etiological myths, capitalism works in service of one thing: rendering any excess back to the owners of capital. Its teleology is sole and singular: profit. Consumers are means; goods and services are means; societies are means. The end is always the same: accruing maximum profits to ownership.

That's why—as opposed to, say, violent uprising and dictatorship of the proletariat—I support nearer-term solutions like sovereign wealth funds, which at least make the collective constituency one of the principal owners of wealth within a society. And they work—in nations that haven't prioritized pure profit, but have nonetheless not "failed". Such solutions aren't panacea, but they're a lot better at protecting and promoting the full social constituency than our current naked rapaciousness.

I think the sovereign wealth funds are an interesting idea. I would like to see them used in place of the current SSI system, but not administered by the government. I would think you could even get bipartisan support for it in that way; it should provide more money to SSI recipients to make Ds happy, and less government waste to make Rs happy.

What about the other 100 plus companies? Help my 70,000 person company just raised minimum wage to 15 am hour. Why do you think these 100 plus companies are doing PR now? Just a coincidence?

You know, I have enough money saved up to buy a new car. But that is not what I want to spend my savings on.

But if. I got a 30k bonus, I may just use that. Money to buy a new car.

See how this works?

Wells Fargo,Amazon,WalMart etc needed a tax break to give out $3 a day bonus'.
gotcha

WalMart announced their min wage increase before the tax bill and in fact did it in reaction to the bad publicity generated by Black Friday protests.

Like the meme says, I too applaud the fact they did it.
But let's not be confused or even be blind to the circumstances.

If they want to say the tax bill -- so what.
But why would you ? They haven't even seen the profits (savings ? ) yet ,
So the money is there. Has been there

Before it was announced? Man, you really think that decision was made with tax considerations?

I just don't understand why you're not elated. If the federal government forced capital one to raise their minimum wage, you'd be dancing in the streets.

Hey sturg, you don't still have that website you posted a while back about how to check your taxes for this year to see how the new law will/won't make things better do you? I would like to check mine but I can't find where you originally posted it. Thanks

But haven't there been lots of prosperous nations over the centuries who weren't very "great" ?

Of course but you still need to have that as a precursor to doing anything else to help your citizens. You can't be a rich nation just by deciding to offer free health care.
