TDA extended

Hell Yeah - TDA is going to regress to the mean in terms of expected fluke injuries in a career.

I think this is going to be viewed as one of AA's best moves in his tenure.

I think this is probably fine, but I have to say, this is betting on an injury prone player who's going to be 33 next February at a physically demanding defensive position in the middle of a pretty terrible season. It's a risk.

Which is why I think the plan will be for him to split time with whoever from the minors is deemed to be ready, Contreras or Langaliers. I don't think D'Arnaud is going to be catching 4 out of 5 days next year. Sort of more of a split like he had with Flowers.

Yea, I’m surprised at this move, tbh. And a bit skeptical.

Surprised this was done in season. Surprised it's essentially the same deal he got from us last time. Surprised we went two years.

I was thinking 1 year. You go TDA and Contreras with SL getting a full year in AAA. Then you go Contreras and SL the next year.

That said, this opens up the ability to trade Contreras or SL in the right deal. It protects you from the nightmare of this year. It keeps you from counting on Contreras AND SL to be good.

If they are thinking universal DH, as almost everyone is, 3 catchers might make sense in 2023 or 2024 anyway. We saw last year there was a lot less need for a bench. If you have 3 catchers you can PH one of your catchers if needed or sub in a new catcher if there are extras, etc. Snit will never do that with only 2 catchers on the roster. 8 million plus two guys on minimum salaries isn't too much allocation on catcher.

agree 100%.

Idea is likely TDA and Contreras next year. Start 2/3 games TDA and adjust Playing time based on productivity.

If the second year of the deal the split becomes Contreras 2/3 or even 3/4 you're still paying something like 10 million a year for a solid catcher situation.

I LOVE team options without buy outs.

With the DH more than likely coming next year he can be placed there a few times a week so this is a pretty good move imo. The lineup has picked up so much since he’s came back. It’ll give Contreras and Shea more time to develop. I agree with giving Morton another year now and going ahead and getting Freddie taken care of.

I think you have to consider the risk of the deal vs the risk of Langeliers or Contreras flopping. Of course there's always the risk of the worst case scenario where they all flop.

But this seems like a reasonable risk to have a reliable catching option while bringing along the young guys. And if one of Lange or Contreras happens to push themselves into a starter role, TDA becomes either a good trade piece or a good back up.

Hard to find fault in this deal - with Langeliers potentially ready by the middle of 2022 (if not earlier), d'Arnaud can be off his feet more and he and Contreras give you options at 1B and DH to give Freeman more rest assuming he's back (and make it potentially a given that you carry 3 "Catchers" with Contreras becoming the emergency option).

As a side note - I think this makes a Freeman extension all but a foregone conclusion.

I guess the verdict is in on what the front office thinks of Contreras.

Or...Td'A could be insurance at 1st base...

I hope not. I don't think so.

I think this is AA saying I don't want to force myself to be reliant on Contreras or SL (zero at bats over AA). Could also be AA over reacting to the pain of this year. He could just say I'm never having another Kevin SMith on the team again.

I hope this means we expect to go back to a proper, precovid payroll after this year. Otherwise TDA, FF and raises may put us at our cap (praying to keep FF w/o crippling the team's finances). Liberty is making money again. Could we get a 130 million opening day payroll with 10 million in reserve?

Why do you say that, about Freeman?

It's weighing the risk of who might develop versus who might regress. I'm surprised it's not one year with a second-year option instead of two years with a third-year option.

I got the impression that the pitchers didn't like throwing to Contreras. I may be way off base, but replacing Contreras with Kevan Smith was something I didn't expect. I wouldn't be surprised to see Contreras moved in a deal. Curious as to what his value might be, but I think this moves speaks volumes about how the front office views him.
