Terrorist attack in Brussels.

Great point. You can't bring people in as basically glorified guest workers and marginalize them without some expectation of pushback. You either bring them fully into your society or you don't bring them in at all. That said, there's enough blame to go around here. Are the hosts unwelcoming or are the guests resisting assimilation?

Like you said, Islam (in most forms) has co-existed with the West (though not always comfortably). Islamism cannot.

I think as we evaluate how Islam exists with non-Islamic cultures (be they secular or religious) we need to factor in the mixed nature of our own modern Western cultures (which is a different animal than looking at Moors in Spain during the Middle Ages for instance or Islam in Indonesia). The various worldviews in collision have to be accounted for. We must take the Islamic worldview seriously. Secularist Westerners have a hard time doing that.

Agreed, but I think Europeans have a harder time doing that than Americans do. Americans (aside from Bill Maher and his crowd) tend to have a more respectful view of religion than the average European. Whether or not they embrace Muslims, I think Americans have a better understanding and appreciation of the spiritual.

I'm thinking our generation does/did 50. Not so sure about a younger one. And you can't counter Islam by an in your-face secularist approach, imho, nor by an older generation's patronizing "all religions are the same" mantra/mindset.

One of my faves to "strongly dislike" and I'm SURE it's one of 50's too. ;)

The Story...

I know I have said this before but I dont view this as a war against islam, I view this as a war against religions as a whole. There are just as many wack job religious people in this country that want to do harm to others for not believing in their religion as there are muslims in the middle east who want to do harm to others for not believing in their religion.

Well at least you are open with your bigotry.

What's the Christian/Buddhist/Jewish/etc. equivalent to ISIS?

I hear that claim being made all of the time and its never made sense to me.

That's aside the point that extremism in the US = extremism in the ME is completely wrong.
