Texting/Talking while driving

that isn't "evidence" they can use for anything

i mean, the pig could go harass the person i guess but they won't be ticketed etc over it

remember though

snitches be bitches found dead in ditches :)

so, I guess you text and drive. Not good.

As for snitching, I would do it every time if a life is threaten and in this case it was. And yes, the police can use my evidence to prosecute here in Wisconsin, but he is only going to warn her, but since she has a record already, he has more ammo to do this.

Another thing, you better have a gun if you are going to put me in a ditch.

i have and most likely will send another text while driving at some point

for the most part i don't though but i am not going to act high and mighty and say i never have and never will again

I don't think it's acting "high and mighty" if someone doesn't do it.
There's pretty much zero reason for it.

you are admitting that there is a reason to sometime by saying "pretty much..."

the tone of the conversation just seems like a "high and mighty" type to me

i know it isn't really safe to do so but i am sure i will get a message while driving soon and i can reply quickly without putting people in danger.

i am not going to type out a huge response though while driving

just being honest about the question

Very rare occasions.
It's proven to be very dangerous. And not just to the driver doing it, but to everyone on the road. I can't stand when I see someone driving terribly with their phone up to their ear, or by their steering wheel. It slows down the flow of traffic and is dangerous for everyone on the road. Nothing high and mighty about that.

i admit it isn't safe

i still think the tone of the thread is high and mighty.

reminds me how we treat smokers in this country yet we don't say anything about fat people

it's the "safe distraction" of driving that everyone can get on board with while it isn't illegal for a woman to be putting on make up while drinking her coffee etc etc

just being honest on the topic

Fun fact, I've almost gotten killed twice driving next to a smoker that was looking down to reach for his lighter, and another smoker that looked down because he dropped his cig on his lap.

My driving philosophy is passive aggressive. If it's a busy 6 lane interstate like 95, I probably won't text.

If it's a 2 lane freeway/highway and there's really nobody around me, I will do it.

If it's a city street and the traffic is flowing at 25-30 mph city, I might do it.

If I'm at a stop light, I most likely will be looking at my phone (this site, texting, etc).

Then again, I drive paranoid as if I'm DWB. I look at every mirror (my side view, the rear view, and passenger side view) probably 6 times in 10 seconds. My eyes are constantly on the move, always looking for who's near me, who's approaching, who's in front, and who can't maintain their lane (those are the ones I will zoom to get away from or drift to let them get as far away as possible).

I'm probably the only person that uses their turn signal anally (switching lanes, turning into a street, turning at a stop light) even if the car is nowhere within a 30 foot radius. When I say I use it religiously, I use it religiously. I get pissed when people don't use it. Those that don't use it when the should, I passive aggressively get the f--- away from them as much as I can.

When I had my blackberry, texting while driving was a non-issue. I could text paragraphs and essays without ever having to look down at my phone. Just one hand texting. Once I reached a stop light or stop sign, I'd look down for a few seconds to make sure my message was crystal clear then hit send.

With the Samsung touch screens, I can't use that same muscle memory, but Swype has been really helpful. As long as I'm in the general neighborhood when I swipe, it generally knows what words I'm going to use since it's learned my vocab. Still a PITA to text while driving, so I've noticeably done it less and less.

I would never text while driving with any of my parents, because the arguments I'd get in the car with them about alone would distract me.

My brothers and sisters that ride with me, we've all texted and drove whenever we're the ones driving each other. Just a matter of knowing when to do it.

Focusing on anything but driving while one is driving is irresponsible and stupid. If I sound like a scold while saying it, so be it. It's dangerous, expensive, and potentially tragic.

For a wealthy, developed country, we lose an absolutely ludicrous number of people to traffic accidents—twice or three times per capita the rate of Europe or Scandinavia. We should, as a society, take the privilege of driving more seriously.

Some people just can't do it.

I don't want to sound "high and mighty", but I've done it for 8 years now, and there are times you just know it's ok to send a text and there are times when you just know now is not the time to pull the phone out and fight another day. In high volume traffic whenever I've driven in a major city like Atlanta, Charlotte, NJ turnpike, NYC, or DC area, I likely will NOT text because there's just too much going on around me that I can't control to even risk it.

However if I'm on a 2 lane highway in Savannah that's just not that busy, I will always look around me a hundred times each mirror to make sure it's a low risk of texting. I simply project how far in front I'm going to be.

Agreed.

People have conversations with other people in the car.
People sing music and get so into it they start closing their eyes in the moment.
People eat and drive.
People take a sip of their coffee and drive.
People talk on the phone while driving.
People talk on their phone while driving using handsfree.
People smoke ciggs while driving.

To really single out texting while driving universally is a bit harsh IMO. The kid that lost his life in Georgia whose family helped push the law in GA, from what I read the way he was texting while driving was really really really dumb and I wouldn't have even texted the way he did. I know it's a risk when I text and drive, but I only do it in the lowest risk situations. I don't try to one up myself to see if I can text with 4 cars around me.

I dunno. The phenomenon is new enough that the body of research isn't really robust, but I think it indicates that texting is actually more dangerous than other forms of distraction, so it actually is worth singling out.

I drive uber cautious cause of all the crazy drivers like sav and goldfly on the road these days. Seen multiple folks flat out run red light because they weren't paying attention, nearly t-boning me with a car full of kids. Excusing it by pointing to other less risky endeavors is unhelpful.

I don't run red lights.

If anything, I get pissed off at people that will speed up to pass me when they know it's a red light just to have to slam their breaks because it's red.

i'm a crazy driver?

Most new Japanese cars have car navigation systems that double as TVs. I see many people driving with their TVs on, and texting or talking on their phones.

The most dangerous this I do is listen to my iPod while driving, but I have to keep the window ear open or I'll get more focused on what I'm listening to than driving. I'm 53 and I've noticed that my driving reflexes have gotten slower. I saw this the other day and can relate:

SC just passed a law; $50 fine for texting and driving but the next month will be a grace period.

That law is a joke. Anyone who causes an accident while texting and driving should lose their license for a period of time.

Texting and driving is here to stay and will only get worse.

It's classified as "distracted driving" in Minnesota and is a moving violation (don't know the fine) so it goes on the driving record and is reported to the insurance companies. I think it's incredibly stupid to text and drive (and I have done it so I am guilty as charged). I'd be down with outlawing talking while driving (handheld device or otherwise). The statistics linking texting/talking and accidents and other violations is pretty compelling.

I use Ford Synch to talk all the time in my car. Technically I think it could be set up to read texts to me and I could respond via voice, but I don't do that. Hands free is a nice thing if you have to stay in touch.
