The Coronavirus, not the beer

In the two days since the above post, Italy is up to 2502 cases and 79 deaths.

Updating two days later, Italy up to 148 deaths. 3,297 active cases. 562 closed cases. 54% of active cases are hospitalized.

Either Italy is dealing with a more virulent version of the virus or they are significantly undercounting the number of infected people.

Has the pope made an appearance lately? He’s been sick and you know how rumors get started

My school has basically cancelled all events of any significant size for the rest of the semester. Summoned home all study abroad students. Strongly intimating that people shouldn't even come to class and that they will be recording all classes.

Honestly seems like kind of an overreaction. This is New York; we all live directly on top of each other. If it really starts getting around, none of that is really gonna help.

Yeah. I'm not far from one of the hotspots in NY. One of my son's friends has had her high school shut down because of contact with one of the infected people. I went to a dinner last Friday that had a guest speaker who coughed his way through his speech. I do wonder about him and some of the people at that dinner. It seems to me there is a decent chance that they crossed paths with some of the people who have tested positive. Same social circles, etc. At this point, you just have to take care of yourself and give your immune system a chance to do its job.

Been thinking about Albert Camus' The Plague, which I read in high school.

I'm not sure at this point that extreme measures would make a difference. But basically there is no comprehensive containment regimen being implemented. Some people coming from high risk areas are being instructed at the airport about what to do (self-quarantine) and others are not being told anything.

We made it shockingly far without the president’s manifest unfitness for office touching the life of the average person and that seems set to change in the near future.
