Just catching up on the news and it seems the president either has

the virus and is taking a risky drug to treat it, or doesn't have it and is

taking a risky drug for the hell of it, or doesn't have it and is lying

about taking a risky drug to get other people to take it, or ...

which even in the middle of and about a pandemic, begs the question

why do they lie ?

He would never take the drug unless he had the virus. It would be insane to do that as a precaution. Oh...

Has Sweden taken the turn drastically downwards now? Tuesday data cluster looks great.

Have they achieved a level of herd immunity whereby future spikes are impossible?

I hope so.

Many safety measures and regulations such as speed limits dont literally save lives since we all die. What they do is extend lives. Something to keep in mind.

Those deaths are not biased towards a select population

Its cold but when you start looking at causes of death and how many LIFE YEARS are taken then a different picture emerges.

Road accidents do have a bias. Against young men.

But your second point is one I think is worthy of consideration.

I think the concern is more having to limit the spread to older more vulnerable people. Students get around. But I like the approach ND is taking.

At what point does the .001% of the vulnerable population need to take the precautions necessary to reduce risk, rather than the 99.99% of population who poses little to no risk?

Further, I don't think the elderly population would want the next generations to suffer on their behalf.

Just very weird whats happening.

Again, when we didn't know what the hell was going on in March it made sense to pause. Once we started getting some real data in the choice should have been very simple.

.001%

That would be 3000 people or roughly the number of deaths the country created patriot act, went to 20years of war etc etc etc over 9/11.
which by your writings , you would have favored at the time.
Before you learned that calling yourself a Libertarian means you really dont have to have a position because ...

you would have loved Bush 43 who famously replied when asked when and what should we do . His response, " go shopping"
Which seems to align with your writings today

It is something to consider and weigh. But I think the vulnerable population is quite a bit larger than .001% even when focusing entirely on deaths.

Additionally there is damage beyond death. Many recovered people have suffered strokes, heart damage, lung damage, kidney damage and other forms of long-term damage. I suspect COVID survivors will eventually be found to have suffered significant losses in life expectancy.

And there are the losses in work hours for people who got sick but made full recoveries.

To make the right choices policy has to try and quantify all of the above.

Early on I made an analogy with deficit spending during war.

But it breaks down in some aspects. Beating Hitler was important for future generations.

Beating COVID is important for the old and sick. That is a BIG difference.

speaking for my brethren in the "elderly population" yes, we do mind.
Putting myself aside, I really dont want to watch my wife, sister, brother , friends friends of friends needlessly suffer because you and some internet troll think ..lord knows what you think

If memory serves, you and sturg have lost your parents.
The people you are willing to throw off the cliff were drafted and fought in Iraq I & Viet Nam (right or wrong. ) . Served on local school boards, coached youth sports taught you in school and are if you ever do go out and meet real people, --- your neighbors

It also is important to get these bumps and bruises from this experience so when the next CCP Biological Warfare attack happens we'll be ready and prepared this time.

My point is I'm not sure why it's the responsibility of the not at risk to make all sacrifices. Why are we shutting down schools for ever kid because grandma is at risk?

Instead, grandma should take severe precautions to stay safe.

Agreed. This is a point Paul Romer made. There are thousands of coronaviruses in nature. More will make the jump to humans. This is part of the justification for making the investment in testing capacity and other capabilities now.

the broad answer is externalities...everytime I fart everyone suffers...so if i can be induced to make a small change in my diet it will result in a socially optimal result

How about the ones at risk stay home and then they won't catch the virus?

Sounds like you are the selfish one for making 99% of the population stay home for your safety.
