They hate freedom
Japan doesn't fetishize the notion of freedom. It has a long, long history and there's a sense of quiet fortitude and a willingness to endure suffering for the sake of the collective. I've come to see them as a very wise and compassionate people. 30 years ago I had a very different perspective.
The Western mindset is biting us in the arse. It can inspire greatness but it also can be destructive in its self-centered forms.
The polling has shown quiet but strong support for being cautious about reopening, consistent with advice of Fauci and other experts. The states that opened without meeting the benchmarks did so contrary to public opinion and expert advice. Waiting two or three extra weeks to reopen would have made a yuge difference. People were getting tired and restless but this could have been managed. Like in Michigan, where the governor refused to be intimidated.
The flinging wide the gates and the huge protests and riots...Smh.
