The Coronavirus, not the beer

Pfizer officials had urged Operation Warp Speed, the government’s initiative to expedite vaccine development, to initially purchase 200 million doses, or enough for the two-shot regimen for 100 million people last summer, according to people knowledgeable about the issue who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the situation. But the Warp Speed officials declined, opting instead for 100 million doses, or enough for 50 million people, they said.

“Anyone who wanted to sell us … without an [FDA] approval, hundreds of millions of doses back in July and August, was just not going to get the government’s money,” said a senior administration official.

Really? You think the govt should've or could've promised millions for an unproven, untested vaccine? I'm not sure you really want your bureaucracy to work like that.

in this type of situation yes...the odds of a vaccine panning out are pretty good by the time it reaches phase 3

We will send billions for absurd reasons to the pentagon for **** that never works

But taking a risk on a vaccine during a pandemic is where we will draw the line when it comes to wasteful spending lol

Lol

Breaking News: Trump administration officials passed when Pfizer offered in the summer to sell the U.S. more coronavirus vaccine doses, people familiar with the matter said. Now Pfizer may not be able to provide more doses to the U.S. until next June.

Plenty to criticize the administration about but this isn't one. Pfizer's vaccine was just one of half a dozen the US bought millions of doses of. This summer there was no real reason to bet heavy on the Pfizer vaccine over others.

If the vaccine was 30% effective and the administration bought 500 million doses in the summer, the same hindsight would call them stupid as well.

Also, if some of the other vaccines pan out we'll have plenty of doses. We've already bought a hundred million doses of Moderna's, Johnson & Johnson's, Astrazenica's, Merck's, etc.

I actually think the administration's approach was right here. Fund the research of a bunch of vaccines and pre-buy doses. Then hope one of two pan out.

They should have just asked Senator David Purdue which one to bet on.

I see the logic, but I don't think "the odds are pretty good" is part of the bureaucratic process. But I agree that it's odd that this administration would care about rules or regulations. They clearly don't.

The Pfizer deal probably didn't give enough credit or kickbacks.

Florida police raided the home of a former state coronavirus data scientist on Monday, escalating a feud between the state government and a data expert who has accused officials of trying to cover up the extent of the pandemic.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement executed a search warrant Monday morning at the home of data scientist Rebekah Jones, who was fired by the state Department of Health in May. The agency is investigating whether Jones accessed a state government messaging system without authorization to urge employees to speak out about coronavirus deaths, according to an affidavit by an agent working on the case.

Freedom boy must have his panties in a wad over this abuse of power.

Looks like it was political. Pfizer wasn't going to be a prop for the administration.

The early anti-Vaxxer deza are living up to expectations. The new vaccines will cause infertility. The new vaccines will change your DNA. Some pretty great stuff already in circulation. Some of it being promoted by people with MD and/or PhD after their names. And I'm not talking about fake MDs or PhDs either.

I'm not sure. The deal with Pfizer is pretty similar to the deals with the other manufacturers, better even. Pre-purchasing 100 million doses with an option to buy 500 million more.

Moderna is 100 million pre-purchased with an option to buy 400 million more.

Johnson and Johnson has a deal for 100 million doses with the option to buy 200 million more.

Novavax is 100 million doses.

Sanofi's deal is very similar to Pfizer's with 100 million doses and an option to purchase 500 million more.

The big difference between Pfizer and others is that Pfizer didn't take any money to subsidize its vaccine research. They apparently did that to avoid any bureaucratic entanglement (also it gives them a freer hand with their vaccine at this point and they're cashing in).
