The Coronavirus, not the beer

North Dakota covid-related hospitalizations: Nov 13 421, Dec 17 148 (70% decline)

South Dakota covd-related hospitalizations: Nov 13 556, Dec 17 406 (27% decline)

Anyone want to guess which state's governor implemented a state-wide mask mandate on November 13?

Noem tried to play big on the national stage ahead of her Presidential run and just absolutely fell flat on her face. It's unfortunate, she's experienced and hadn't acted crazy before this. She would have been a nice option for the first female President, especially with no known instances of sleeping her way up the ladder.

Given the hospitalizations data, we should see an even bigger divergence in deaths in coming weeks between North and South Dakota.

These decisions are literally costing (or saving) hundreds of lives. Thousands in the bigger states.

Burgum took a long time to act. So he has not exactly covered himself in glory. Things had to get really desperate before he listened to the pleas coming from the doctors.

Burgum has been terrible but Noem is scary bad

So the vaccine prioritization is not going to the most at risk first (elderly). The justification is that they are less diverse???

This is a situation where our woke intersectional bull**** is literally going to kill people

Pence has been much more solid than very poorly chosen one in terms of modeling the right behavior and providing a good example. If we had had a relatively normal human being like him as president most of this nonsense about masks and "liberating Michigan" would have been avoided.

The data show that a 50 year old hispanic person has similar risk of dying from covid as a 70 year old white person. I don't have a problem with prioritization reflecting this data.

Oh so now we care about data for younger people?

Thats welcome news

Are they targeting specific hispanic people though?

I can't recall if I posted it here or somewhere else, but there was a post election article that made the point that voters overwhelmingly supported Trumpism while rejecting Trump. I thought it was a solid take that hasn't been expressed that plainly very often.

Why is LA surging so much?

Crickets.

You can't use rising problems in North Dakota as proof that this stuff works, while ignoring everywhere it isn't.

LA probably is the strictest place in the country and certainly has some of the most obedient shee, I mean people in the country.

Seems to me this virus does what it wants whenever it wants and maybe we shouldnt decimate our economy and our civil rights to try to stop something that has the same odds of killing most people that a lightening strike would.

But we will only look at the data when it fits our agenda I guess

There are a lot of variables at work. The idea is to try to reduce the effects of confounding variables by comparing places like North and South Dakota that are similar. That way we can get an idea of the efficacy of a single intervention like the governor's mask mandate. Of course, even with the Dakotas, there are other differences as well that could cause the epidemic to go one way in North Dakota and another way in South Dakota. But the idea is to reduce the risk there are confounding variables at work. Similarly you want to compare Sweden to neighboring countries that are similar in terms of demographics, population density, household size, etc.

This is how we got Trump. He was willing to take this crap on when no one else was. Hopefully some of the more skilled players have learned to add that to their game, because this guy is representative of a problem that needs to be solved.

If I learned one thing earning my BS in Philosophy, it’s to be wary of someone claiming to be an expert in anything, let alone something as complicated as Ethics.

It is now costing us lives when for the whole year young people were told they had to stay home to save the elderly.

Mother Pence looks quite attractive with her mask on.
