Portugal’s health care system was on the verge of collapse. Hospitals in the capital, Lisbon, were overflowing and the authorities were asking people to treat themselves at home. In the last week of January, nearly 2,000 people died as the virus spread.

The country’s vaccine program was in a shambles, so the government turned to Vice Adm. Henrique Gouveia e Melo, a former submarine squadron commander, to right the ship.

Eight months later, Portugal is among the world’s leaders in vaccinations, with roughly 86 percent of its population of 10.3 million fully vaccinated. About 98 percent of all of those eligible for vaccines — meaning anyone over 12 — have been fully vaccinated, Admiral Gouveia e Melo said.

“We believe we have reached the point of group protection and nearly herd immunity,” he said. “Things look very good.”

On Friday, Portugal ended nearly all of its coronavirus restrictions. There has been a sharp drop in new cases, to about 650 a day, and vanishingly few deaths.

Making it so someone isn’t “vaccinated” until 14 days following is a nice way to hide vaccine adverse reactions.

Imagine spending the past six months screaming at everyone to get an unnecessary vaccine and finding out you’re just doing what big pharma is paying everyone to do.

Embarrassing.

Vaxxholes are the worst.

Can we stop listening to the lobbyists and covid cowards already?

It is surprising, but data are accumulating that immunity via vaccine is more effective than acquired immunity.

I think this needs to be looked at carefully. It could be that some of the vaccinated people had prior immunity.

There are also some indications that vaccines provide a booster of sorts for people who have prior immunity.

I doubt that’s true. Just anecdotally I know way more vaccinated people getting covid than people that had it before.

All the vaccine efficacy numbers are impacted by an unknown percentage who had natural immunity.

We need to stop believing the people who have been lying from the beginning.

I think you need to look at ratios. At this point there are more people who have been vaccinated than people who have acquired immunity (even in southern Georgia).

Here are the Oklahoma data. For September, they show about 1,000 breakthroughs per 100,000 for people with acquired immunity and about 500 breakthroughs per 100,000 for people who have been vaccinated.

Maybe not so surprising when you consider that acquired immunity for most coronaviruses is only good for 6-12 months.
