The Duvall Moment She Comes...Pronto

Should have happened 2 to 3 weeks ago when Riley showed he really couldn't define the strike zone and it became apparent that he was doing a lot of guessing.

Had it been done then, we could have seen if Duvall was really capable of hitting in the MLB and then taken necessary action.

I wouldn't give much weight to 2-3 weeks of ML action. He has a track record. His record over the past three years, both in the majors and in AAA, when evaluated collectively indicates he can help.

No question about helping, but how effectively? His '18 stats were dismal overall, but especially in Atl. '16 and '17 were almost identical and would be the ones that would make him a highly competent OF for the Braves, especially at this point in time.

There is a range of possible outcomes. He could stink up the joint. But decisions have to be made on the range of likely outcomes and in Duvall's case there is a solid argument he can help the team.

I'm thinking AA must have some kind of more recent data, analysis, or report on Duvall that is negative. He's one of the more confusing cases in our system.

He was monumentally bad after we acquired him last year and wasn't having a great year before we traded for him. In spite of that, AA liked him enough to tender him a contract that was going to be worth several million.

He goes to ST as an odds on favorite to win a roster spot. He face plants in ST and the Braves acquire Joyce. AA could have released Duvall and saved several million but instead chooses to keep him.

After all of this, Duvall starts absolutely mashing in AAA. However, when Ender gets hurt AA chooses to start Riley's clock over calling up Duvall.

There's still no indication the Braves are considering promoting Duvall.

What happened between tendering him a contract last year or the end of ST and now? All I can think is that AA got more information on Duvall and doesn't see him as worth the call up.

My boy, Riley is giving AA no choice at the moment... Duvall or carmargo will have to take over vs lhp soon

Riley should spend the rest of July and all of August trying to figure things out. We can bring him back in September. We still have 6 important games before the deadline, and we obviously need to improve and nail down our needs. Replacing Riley for now is an easy first step, and it could and should be dealt with today. Instead of Duvall, I would like to see us call up Demeritte. He can play infield if needed, and he doesn't have any crazy splits to exploit. At this point, Duvall should be flipped for a reliever if possible.

Misleading title. Thought Duvall was being called up.

Ban?

I took great care in crafting that title and even submitted it to legal for review. It references one of the great all time bad movies. But in such an obscure way I don't think anyone will figure it out.

I assume Duvall would have been called up earlier had Riley not done so well. But at this point in the season, is it possible we're just keeping Duvall down in order to extract another year of control? I'm no expert on service time, so may be someone else can figure out at what point we would gain an extra year of control.

I also would like to see Demeritte, but I'm assuming he'll be a Sept call up.

If not Demeritte, I would even rather see Ortega than Duvall. He gives us another option for CF if needed. We can explore the Duvall situation in August if he isn't traded. I think he will be. But the Riley situation needs to be addressed today, considering we are looking ahead to three RHPs in the Phillies series.

A certain Dana Carvey movie I assume?

Demeritte has outhit Duvall so far this year. But this reflects relative BABIP luck (.365 vs .248). Duvall has the superior strikeout rate (19.8% vs 26.5%). At this point, I would go with the guy with major league experience and the superior strikeout rate.

Ortega hits lefty. So doesn't fit neatly into the great Duvall/Riley/Demeritte debate.

Maybe we should set up another thread for Ortega v Inciarte. I am not opposed.

Yeah. But we don't necessarily need to replace Riley with basically a lefty specialist.

i'm shocked they haven't at least tried to see what they have in Duvall. he cannot be worse than Riley has been the last month+. it makes so little sense. very strange.

I thought this too, so I looked at his service time. It's at 3.096, which means 3 years and 96 days. He needs 76 days of service time this year to get another full year (172 days by definition), or 10 weeks. He could have been called up in the 2nd half of July and the Braves would have still gained the extra year of control.

Duvall isn't exactly mashing in AAA overall, but his .315/.435/.719 (1.154 OPS) line vs LHP in AAA and known good defense has to be a better bench option than Riley. He seems like a slam dunk to replace Riley so he can go work on things in AAA, so the fact it hasn't happened yet means there is something else we can't see.
