I thought this too, so I looked at his service time. It's at 3.096, which means 3 years and 96 days. He needs 76 days of service time this year to get another full year (172 days by definition), or 10 weeks. He could have been called up in the 2nd half of July and the Braves would have still gained the extra year of control.
Duvall isn't exactly mashing in AAA overall, but his .315/.435/.719 (1.154 OPS) line vs LHP in AAA and known good defense has to be a better bench option than Riley. He seems like a slam dunk to replace Riley so he can go work on things in AAA, so the fact it hasn't happened yet means there is something else we can't see.
Which is bizarre considering they twice could have let him walk but kept him around. I don't understand paying him several million to play in AAA. I just wonder what has changed.
