The Gattis Thread...

To do that he's going to need more than to be a "tad more selective."

Gattis is a .260ish hitter who walks 5-6 percent of the time. He would have to improve one or both of those numbers quite substantially to be a .900 OPS player. 35 homers is also a bit of a stretch considering his 162 game average is 29 homers. I guess if he went to Texas or some other band box, an extra 5-6 homers over 162 games would be possible, but not likely.

Teams aren't going to view him as such either. They're going to value him as he is, not what he could be.

Games per homer isn't the best bet for Gattis since he pinch hit a lot his rookie season thus driving down the actual number of PA's per game. His homers per 600 ABs is 32. Only way I could see him reach that number though is for AL team so he could DH. But the man has legit power.

Same. To borrow from the spinmaster; Evan is the right player on the wrong team in the wrong league. Moving him now would be a smart play, provided the talent coming back is as good as these preliminary reports are indicating it could be.

Pretty much. Plus i want CB up starting.

On Gattis: I had a stray thought last night.

So the guy had knee surgery (wasn't it microFracture?) some years ago and he's huge, and although he doesn't have many miles on him, he's relatively old. And we're worried that if we leave him at catcher, he won't have a long career.

What do we care? We're like a college team. We get 'em for six years, after which they go get paid. We got four years left on this guy. Let's ride him like a horse. He's a decent catcher and a possibly elite RH power hitter. If there's anything left in four years we'll see if we can get value then. We don't need to get external value now.

Yup, from the Braves perspective his value is from the remaining four years of contractual control. He could be 22 he could be 33. We would still have him under control for four years. Age only matters to the extent it influences the projections for those four years.

Yeah, we'll never extent him.

Are we the only two who understant this?

No. But you could still get 4 years of good production out of him at a low cost.

The braves are dealing from a position of strength. They don't have to trade Gattis. Teams want him. So the price should be high.

It's the exact opposite of our desire to dump BJ and CJ where we might even give up talent to get them gone.

JUp has the 1 year clock on him. Gattis we could keep for another year or two and still flip. Yes he could get hurt but you could say the same thing about anyone..including Heyward.

Part of that problem is the need for him to play 140 games if were looking to remain competitive by keeping Gattis. Gattis only starting 110 games isn't going to cut it. Teams don't carry extra stars in case one of their other stars gets hurt.
