The Incoherence of Millenials

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”

- Socrates (attributed by Plato), who lived from 468-399 BC.

Some things will never change I guess

This doesn't sound like something Plato's Socrates would say (unless it was ironically), so I looked it up (sorry Zito!), and it isn't. Best I could find is that it's a paraphrase of something from Aristophanes' Clouds, which is a satirical comedy ripping on Socrates. And even in that play, it wasn't spoken by him directly (sort of; it's a weird play).

So... sturg has just proved Bedell's point kind of? Maybe?

I googled your google and found pretty much that exact explanation on stack exchange. Maybe a college professor could confirm that for me?

I've read that the quote is attributed to one of them, but there's no evidence either one ever said it. It's just been passed around so much that people take it as fact.

In regards to the original post, bleh. Every generation thinks the following ones are worse. Never mind how the old people have screwed up and over the younger people in this country. No, they were hard working and perfect, and youngins are lazy and entitled. Rubbish.

It's these damn kids with their damn walkmans and their damn distorted overdriven guitars and their damn MTV's!

I found it on wikiquote. And then double checked on the stack exchange one. And then I went and found the Clouds online and re-read that part thus is supposedly paraphrased. I'm very very sorry.

I mean, it is pretty similar in gist to the "Just Discourse's" monologue from the Clouds: here. And the discourse is a character who comes out of Socrates' hovel. But attributing that to "Socrates" is like attributing something from "That's my Bush!" to George W.

Whoa so That's My Bush! wasn't 100% accurate? I feel so deceived by that news station that broadcasted it.
