The people are the only censors of their governors: and even their errors will tend to keep these to the true principles of their institution. To punish these errors too severely would be to suppress the only safeguard of the public liberty. The way to prevent these irregular interpositions of the people is to give them full information of their affairs thro’ the channel of the public papers, & to contrive that those papers should penetrate the whole mass of the people. The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.

did you really just link video from a white house correspondents dinners to try to make a point?
Sorry, but when the left didn't bat an eye lash when Obama signed NDAA in 2012, their cries of "authoritarian dictatorship" ring very hollow to me
The actual left did.
I sure didn't hear about it... just libertarians who were mocked for being concerned about the road to authoritarianism... now we have Trump
whats for me?
No, actually its all going according to plan. The tide has already turned, now we can put a big ugly authoritarian face on the war on drugs. I think it will speed up federal legalization by 10 years. It will guarantee Trump is a one term President. I see my guys son Rand Paul getting his name out there and playing the game. I get the feeling his time will come and he will get the Republican nomination at some point. Trump crashing and burning will only help him.
