The Trump Presidency

So the scoreboard now is that the Rs won the big races they were supposed to win, and the Ds won the big elections that they were supposed to win, along with a couple of state rep gains in a blue state that's trending bluer.

But...Drumpf repudiation wave!

I don't disagree with your big-picture conclusions, but you're underplaying the statehouse gains in VA a tad, IMO. Democrats netted 16 seats (maybe). Sure, that's going to be hard to hold, and most of them weren't flips of big Trump areas, but it was a significant overperformance relative to expectations. And Northam's margin with 18-29 y/o was +39. There's some stuff to think about in there.

I have to fess up, I misread that as six seats when I was scanning news this morning. Sixteen is formidable.

Speaking of the Women's March . . .

Per AP:

MAYS LANDING, N.J.
A New Jersey politician who shared a meme on Facebook during January's Women's March in Washington asking whether the protest would be "over in time for them to cook dinner" is eating his words.

A woman who was angered by Republican John Carman's remarks on Tuesday defeated his bid for a second term as an Atlantic County freeholder.

Democrat Ashley Bennett is a first-time candidate. The 32-year-old Egg Harbor Township resident works as a psychiatric emergency screener in the crisis department at Cape Regional Hospital.

Carman said the meme was "a bad choice" but said the women in his life were "strong and confident" enough to not be offended by his joke. He apologized a few days later.

He later drew more criticism for wearing a confederate flag patch.

Democrats got pretty much exactly the results you’d expect when opposing a GOP president with a 38% approval rating.

How did I miss this meme? Hilarious.

I think the thing to do is definitely to complain about how dumb voters are, then close your eyes and wish for a viable alternative capable of electoral success and governance to appear.

Well considering approval ratings of both parties are at time lows, and considering that the majority of Americans' political beliefs align more closely with libertarians than either democrat or republican, I think it's safe to say that Americans continuing to vote in parties they hate and don't agree with is.. and odd move.

But hey, those pesky fiscally conservative, socially liberal, anti-war libertarians are nothing but unicorns.

I actually find it sad that so many are happy to sell America's soul for a stock market hyper-bubble. It's only a matter of time before Trump brings the market crashing down as well, whether due to a tweet, a war or an impeachment. Perhaps all of the above. The devil will come to collect our soul eventually, metaphorically speaking.

Full disclosure, it's fun watching my 401k rise so rapidly, though I'm under no illusions that it'll only be a fraction of this amount soon enough.

Humor me - How are we selling its soul?

Way off topic, but I just saw this video for the first time. The last half is campaign speech that everyone is familiar with, but I found the first few segments interesting. Trump has been a nationalist for a long, long time.

Whats going to end up happening is that tax reform is going to get demolished in Congress as class warfare is played out. Rates are going to be jacked up on the rich and the corporate rates / repatriation rate will not be as low as was initially forecasted. Business will react and the market is going to take a big hit.

Then we will hear the left talk about how the first year was just remnants of Obama and now this is Trump destroying the economy.

Very impressed by Danica. She focused on the issues. Not her backstory.

By all accounts she ran a campaign that was responsive to local concerns. It seems like a positive sign to me: Danica Roem can make her campaign about growth issues and transportation policy and leave the bathroom policing to her opponent. For all the gloomy projections and "American carnage" of the past year, that really seems like a step in the right direction.

You certainly wouldn't understand because you are one of those people. It's all well documented and discussed by everyone.

I'd love it if you reiterated how we are selling our soul. Its such a strong comment. Even if I don't agree I want to know where you stand.

It sure is. As a talking point, anyway.

Lets keep telling the people that pay 70% of the income taxes that they aren't paying their fair share.

Its easy to get the non-payers on board because its just more freebies. We've moved from slavery to indentured servitude.
