The Trump Presidency

Joe Biden. Next?

Biden seems like the perfect counter to Trump. Folksy enough to be nearly universally liked, but still willing and able to get rough when it's needed. I'll be surprised if he or any other white male is the nominee. I agree with Sav about Warren seeming like she's talking down to people, and even the Ds I know don't find Harris likeable. If I had to make a prediction now I would pick Booker, but we're still a long way out. I thought Booker looked formidable during the Kavanaugh hearings.

deficit went up sharply cause shockingly the tax cuts didn't pay for themselves

much less make a surplus like they said it would

i'm shocked

also, love the dumbass in chief saying Sears was run bad while having one of their board members for nearly the last decade and a half in his cabinet

That is their strategy. Use huge deficit spending to boost the economy in the short term then run on the strength of the economy. Then when a democrat wins they will suddenly fight defecit spending to the death. They know as long as the economy is good people will put up with almost anything.

A responsible President shouls use deficit spending during a recession and cut spending when the economy is good to balance things out. Instead they are spending a ton to make good economy better.

Populism is popular in its initial stages. Then comes the reckoning. The pattern is a familiar one.

Feels like the hypocrisy has reached critical mass 2 years into Trumps presidency as he is now defending Muslims who brutally murdered someone by cutting them to pieces. That the democrats cant seem to capitalize on these gaffes says a lot about them. They should be blitzing the media calling Trump weak and saying how he is too scared of Saudi arabia to do anything about it.

Good old pat, what would Jesus do?:

Founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network says arms deal is more important than Khashoggi

“You’ve got $100 billion worth of arms sales,” said Robertson. “We cannot alienate our biggest player in the Middle East.”

I dont know if its refreshing that he is actually being honest instead of playing the jesus card or sad that its not even really controversial anymore.

Everything is upside-down right now. Your last paragraph sums up the original vision of Keynes (until both sides thought tax cuts and increased spending--depending on which side of the fence you are on--were thought to be able to construct a viable perpetual motion machine). I think a strong case could have been made for the corporate side of the tax cuts, but the individual cuts were pure sugar (I think that's the way Steve Bannon described it to Bill Maher last month) that were needed to get the corporate rate reduction passed. Add to that the spending extensions that were passed after the tax cut (largely passed by the Democrats along with a cadre of Republicans who either totally lost their math skills or didn't want to appear heartless after passing the tax cuts) and it should be no surprise where the deficit is headed.

The combination of those two items have contributed to an overheating of the economy. As is usually the case with the business cycle, there will be a reckoning and I'm curious to see when and how it transpires. Housing market is softening and that's usually the first sign that a slowdown of some magnitude is in the offing.

As liberal as I may be on some things, I am all about reducing the deficit and that takes both a sensible tax system that delivers revenue for budget outlays and budget outlays that adhere to realistic limits over the long term. I fear that both sides have become clueless. For the record, I thought Paul Tsongas would have made one helluva President.

Booker is awful and would get exposed for trying to be something he’s not.

He wants to be Obama 2.0 so bad and he just isn’t. His oratory skills and charisma look so rehearsed that he can’t even hold Obama’s strap.

Plus one of the Dems in primaries will expose him for being a shill for big pharma in NJ.
