Things They Say

“Democrats just don’t seem to want to use their leverage to protect the Dreamers,” said Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), an outspoken member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

“At what point do Democrats say no more?” a frustrated Gutierrez told reporters in the Speaker’s Lobby Wednesday afternoon. “Right now there are many Democrats who feel we gave up, not just me.”

Angel Padilla, policy director at the liberal group Indivisible, called the Democratic-backed deal "a slap in the face" to Dreamers. "This is all Democrats trying to score political points for 2018 while sacrificing something they could do now for Dreamers."

“How do we arrive at this conclusion? The Democratic Party should be about discussion, debate and talking to one another. There was none,” Gutiérrez said.

Kimberley Barnette, 53, one of the three candidates running in next week’s mayoral primary, wrote on her Facebook profile: “Vote for me! Kimberley Paige Barnette, Mayor of Charlotte 2017, REPUBLICAN & SMART, WHITE, TRADITIONAL.”

Robin Hayes, the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, has condemned the social media post. Hayes said Tuesday that any suggestion a candidate is more or less qualified based on skin color alone “is offensive to North Carolina Republicans.”

“The Charlotte mayoral contest will be decided based on who can best promote public safety, provide economic development and improve critical infrastructure needs. This contest will not be decided based on the skin color of the candidates,” Hayes said. “Any suggestion that a candidate is more or less qualified for political office based on their skin color alone, offensive to North Carolina Republicans and we condemn it. This type of suggestion has no place in our public discourse.”

Barnette, who is running against Kenny Smith and Gary Dunn, said in a WTVI debate in August that she did not want to encourage lower-income people to move to Charlotte when asked how she would help lower-income families.

“I don’t think we should encourage more lower-income people to [come to] Charlotte,” Barnette said. “We should attract higher-income people.”

Barnette told the Charlotte Observer that she would be a good mayor because “I’m good at listening and analyzing information. I think I’d be good at it.”

U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown announced during a speech Thursday afternoon that he plans to introduce a bill he hopes will curtail hate speech at universities.

If passed, the bill would require universities and colleges to demonstrate they have programs and initiatives in place that clearly define to students "what is acceptable speech and what is not acceptable speech," Brown (D-Md.) said to a room of roughly 150 people at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

For institutions that might lack the necessary resources to create these programs, the bill would set aside grant money to "take away any excuse," Brown said.

Hurricane Irma isn't the right time to talk about climate change
-EPA's Scott Pruitt

Hurricane Irma poses the most significant threat to Florida in memory — and "this is the kind of storm that you read about in the history books," said Bryan Norcross, senior hurricane specialist at The Weather Channel.

"This has the possibility of running up the peninsula and affecting every major city in the state. It's not certain that that's what's going to happen, but it certainly is a possibility," Norcross said Wednesday.

"We don't know what is going to happen exactly. But we know what the range of possibilities is — and this is a situation where the top of that range is extraordinarily extreme," he said. "This is the kind of storm that I always pictured when I read the history books about the great Florida hurricanes of the past and imagined how they would impact the modern state."

"But we have so to send a clear message, just because your child gets across the border, that doesn’t mean the child gets to stay. So, we don’t want to send a message that is contrary to our laws or will encourage more children to make that dangerous journey."

“I was down there and I watched our police and our firemen, down on 7-11, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down, and I saw the greatest people I’ve ever seen in action. … I saw the bravest people I’ve ever seen, including the construction workers, including every person down there. That’s what New York values are about.”

“I’ve talked to people, multiple ones, and they believe that they are putting a slow sedative that they’re building up that’s also addictive in his (Trump's) Diet Cokes and in his iced tea, and that the president by six or seven at night is basically slurring his words and is drugged.”

Some things I'm thinking about that should change come Mondey (in that Southern Black grandmama voice):
1. White ppl if you don't have any descendents, will your property to a Black or Brown family. Preferably one that lives in generational poverty.
2. White ppl if your inheriting property you intend to sell upon acceptance, give it to a Black or Brown family. You bound to make that money in a white privileged way some other way.
3. If you are a developer or realty owner of multi family housing, build a sustainable complex in a Black or Brown blighted neighborhood and let Black and Brown people live in it for free.
4. White ppl if you can afford to downsize give up the home you own to a Black or Brown family. Preferably a family from generational poverty.
5. White ppl if any of the ppl you intend to leave your property to are racists assholes, change the will and will your property to a Black or Brown family. Preferably a family from generational poverty.
6. White ppl, re-budget your monthly so you can donate to Black funds for land purchasing.
7. White ppl, especially white women (because this is yaw specialty= Nosey Jenny & Meddling Kathy), get a racist fired. Yaw know what the **** they be saying. You are complicit when you ignore them. Get your boss fires cause they racist too.
8. Backing up #7, this should be easy but all those sheetless Klan, Nazi's and Other lil dick white men will all be returning to work. Get they ass fired. Call the police even: they look suspicious.
9. Ok backing up #8, if any white person at your work or as you enter in spaces and you over hear a white person praising the actions from yesterday: first, get a pic, get they name and more info, hell find out where they work=GET THEM FIRED. But certainly address them and if you need to, you got hands: use them.
10. Commit to 2 things: fighting white supremacy where and how you can (this doesn't mean taking up knitting unless you're doing it to make scarfs for Black and Brown kids in need) and funding Black and Brown ppl and their work.
