Ok this legit pisses me off. Dude was accused of petty larceny. A ****ing misdemeanor, and was held without bail for 4 months. The judge who issued that should be tried for manslaughter. **** that ****. If he had mental health issues as is reported in the article get the man help, don't send him to jail for petty larceny.

I'm beyond words at this point. THis is incomprehensibly stupid.

There's no excusing crime, but until the "put 'em away for fun and profit crowd" starts getting some of the same treatment themselves instead of seeing themselves and their friends, relatives, etc., crimes overlooked in favor of "certain other groups" they'll never get your point. It's like (in reverse) having your mom bribe the judges so that you'll win an award and then when they call your name out you get up with the best surprised "who me" look you can muster.

Judge was wrong for holding a thief accountable?

Are you kidding?

This isn't the bible and all our sins aren't equal under our laws

You really can't be saying you support the govt spending all it does to lock up someone for that for that long?

Krg?

There is no face palm that can accurately describe that post you've written. In those months we wasted a lot of money to pay the situation many times over.

AA, please tell me that you actually write up on his case and just not this one sided summary of it. What other changes has this guy committed? You were so fast to indict the officers in ferguson of murder don't forget.

The judge said the guy wasn't competent to stand trial and ordered him to a mental facility. The mental facility was full so he was struck in jail. The judge didn't order the guy to jail to begin with. Zito is a ****ing moron for putting this on the judge when it's really about there's no place to put insane people anymore.

In the past few months we've seen horrific tragedies of insane people committing acts of murder. I guess AA, zito, and gold are all for insane people being on the streets instead of the guy receiving the proper care he needs. You just said people like him don't belong In jail but on the streets.

If there's nothing wrong with thieves why do you guys lock your house and your car?

Seriously, go **** yourself. Take a good hard look at your life. And go **** yourself. This is the lowest of th elow. YOu're probably popping bottles cause another black guy is dead. Eat a bag of dicks and go **** yourself.

THis is on the judge, because the judge shouldn't be holding someone for petty larceny without bail, ever. THere's no reason to. He didn't do dick that was harmful to others, he stole 5 bucks worth of goods and was held without bail.

I think the guy should get the proper care, and instead of investing a **** load of money in prisons and war , we should invest in healthcare, mental and physical both.

But in the end, because of ****ers like you, we don't. You know when the mental health issues and homeless issues started? Reagan administration. Because he ended them. And you probably put on a Reagan mask and crank down in the mirror at night.

In summation, **** you.

Zito, don't get pissed just because Kr shot holes all through your misplaced angst.

So tell me big guy, where do people like him to get care if there's nowhere to get care? The judge already tried to get him care.

So why do you lock your car and your house if you don't think there's anything with stealing?

First paragraph, NO, I didn't. I said let the facts come out first, I was only defending the words you said about the dead person and the level you and other stooped to without getting the facts. IN the end you were right, I was right but I don't blindly look at my skin and defend something, but you look at your skin and then automatically assume something. That is the difference between you and I. You have a racist tendency to any black that did something wrong like I have a bias to any Muslim that do right from wrong, but Muslim is a religion not a race, again different semantics.

2nd point is weak as weak as can be, there are other facilities he could have sent him to. No, he wasted tax payers money on something like this. I know your way of judgement is the Judge Dredd type, guilty regardless of innocent, annihilate on the spot and not waste tax payers money.....if they are black.

3rd point, again you are using an outlandish post to say I coddle criminals, no I don't, but some crimes are head scratching and this is one of them because in the end, you and I pay for it. So I guess you are okay with the 200 + dollars you pay in county taxes for a 3rd rate burgler.

Judge shoulnd't have held him without bail for a petty larceny. If he needed help he should have gotten it. But he shouldn't have been held without bail for stealing 5 bucks worth of **** from 7/11

I lock my car because I can't afford to replace it. If someone held me up for 500 bucks I could recover that. Especially something that was 5 bucks.

Zito, don't get pissed just because Kr shot holes all through your misplaced angst.

Oh so you believe in an america where a man can be held without bail for petty larceny, a misdemeanor. THanks for clarifying that, I will be sure to ignore your opinion when it comes to law.

Not all of it is misplaced, specifically the gist of this bit:

I think the guy should get the proper care, and instead of investing a **** load of money in prisons and war , we should invest in healthcare, mental and physical both.

It isn't that cut and dry though. First off, the judge was having this guy involuntarily committed. That supercedes bail. Secondly, Mitchell was a two time petty larceny offender. Virginia is a three-strikes state and as it pertains to larceny in VA the 3rd offense, regardless of stolen amount, is an automatic felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

So, looking at things objectively, and undertaking a full consideration of the facts available to me, it would appear the judge was actually attempting to PROTECT Mitchell (and rightfully so, dude was an untreated bipolar schizophrenic who apparently killed himself refusing food/medicine) by deeming him mentally unfit to stand trial.

But you and your ilk want to stand on your dainty little soapboxes and crow about injustice. It's idiots like you who unwittingly destroy beneficial judicial partiality which almost universally benefits the individuals who need it the most

Virginia is one of the few states that is actually going above and beyond federal recommendations (and fund matching) for mental health related care. A GOP championed effort by the way.

But to the larger point, yes, I agree, it would be nice if we didn't need to spend on prisons and/or a military. Or spent proportionate to need.

FIrst things first, 3 strike rule is just dumb, and in many ways is just another way to keep the institutional racism alive and well in America.

If the judge had the ability to hold him without bail for petty larceny, why doesn't he have the ability to get him into the hospital he needs care in? I find it hard to believe every hospital in Virginia was full. I don't even believe this one was, but because the hospital system in America is ran for profit, we see them over treating those with means and not wanting to admit those without. Want to see me on a soapbox, we can talk about health care.

You're right, we're dealing with someone who needed help. When it was obvious that he wasn't gonna get into the hospital, he shouldn't have been kept in jail. It's absurd.

I don't know about the judge but the jail is guilty of negligence leading to loss of life and his family should sue.

This is far more tragic than a 60 yr old drunk falling to his death at a baseball game.

Considering your diatribe in this thread continues to be a comedy of errors, no, I don't want to see you on any sort of soapbox.

1) This was likely a magistrate judge who oversees hundreds of similar misdemeanor cases a day. In most larger cities these initial hearings are conducted via teleconference.
2) He remands the defendant to a psychiatric institution. That's it. He isn't involved in the process of choosing where the patient goes, the type of care he/she receives, etc.
3) Hospital =/= Mental Care Institution
4) These are not 'for profit' institutions, they are federally administrated facilities.
5) If he shouldn't have been kept in jail, and couldn't secure admittance to an asylum, where should he have gone? Home? You are seriously advocating for the unconditional release of a habitual offender that is also a bipolar schizophrenic? You might have a case if this was dude's first offense, but it wasn't, and the whole mental health situation is a major community concern.
