Thread: GDT: 4/9 #MyAce v.s. the Rocks

That curveball the one Thethe posted was the nastiest I saw from any pitcher this year. It disappeared.

If he can get his 97 mph fastball just to move or some cutting he can be nasty.

I need to check pitch selection for Fried. It seems he is still relying on his FB/curve combo to much. I would like to see a few more sliders/change_ups to keep hitters off his fastball.

Don't be upset when I rarely get something right after you said there was no chance.

I think you need to go back and look at what I said about Fried. Then you may want to pump the brakes a bit and stop setting yourself up to be mocked yet again.

Fried has pitched against the Cubs when they were scuffling, and the Rockies who have the worst offense in MLB so far.

Fried has a 0% HR/FB rate, a nearly 90% LOB%, and a microscopic .162 BABIP against. His results are unsustainable.

We literally have the same discussion every year when someone does something great in a small sample size and you proclaim him the next big deal, and are inevitably wrong within a month. How many times do you have to be wrong before you wise up?

It won’t happen but I would not hesitate to put JT in the pen, cut Tomlin and keep Wright.

This is going to be very interesting to see what they do, especially when Soroka is ready.

Folty, Gaus and Soroka are pretty clearly the best 3 SPs at this moment in time. Fried with his new slider is pitching too well to even consider removing from the rotation right now.

I think the time to move Newk to the BP is very close, and then it's a choice between Julio and Wright for the last spot in the rotation. I can see both sides of the "let Wright work on pitch execution in AAA" debate, even though I'd prefer to watch Wright than Julio.

Newk did get out the final 14 batters he faced last time out. I think he has earned another start to see if he can build on that...

If he can build on his last start, then the decision really is between Teheran and Newk, with Wright going back to AAA.

With the snow out today, I could see Folty coming back on Sunday, then Fried pitches Monday.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Newk and JT grouped every 5th day. Have One open the game and go twice through if possible and then the other go twice through if possible. Goal would be 3-4 innings each. Neither going 3 times through the lineup.

Swanson’s swing looks like Chipper’s RH swing so much that it’s scary. The only thing that is missing is a turtleneck. That is one reason that I believe his start to the season isn’t a fluke.

I am hoping Fried will start to throw the slider and change more as weather warms. FG had him throwing slider 3 times and change 6 times.

He is still learning how to pitch, I can see and gaining confidence.

His stuff his there, but the mental part is what he needs to master. Julio has done it and his stuff is not in the same hectare of Fried's.

40% HR/FB rate leading to a .440 ISO over 43 PAs is the definition of a fluke.

Fluke sounds a little strong. I'd agree with unsustainable, but flukey to me would mean just pure luck. That fact that his swing just looks better, the observation that he is so far not chasing every low and away slider, the fact that he's gone yard oppo and to dead center and his apparent health and confidence would lead me to believe there is likely to be significant improvement with some increase in power in the long term. Is he going to keep that kind of ISO and hit 50 bombs? Hardly.

The best part of this game was the Braves challenge of the out call by Kulpa on Freddie at 3B.. New York over turned the out call. You know that pissed Kulpa off because in his opinion he's never wrong.
