THURDAY MINORS FINAL /2/18: July Players of the Month

Nolan Gorman hit his ninth homer today. I was among the group who wanted Carter Stewart over him, but Gorman is off to a ridiculous start.

I wanted them to take Gorman badly. The Braves screwed up by taking yet another pitcher. They need to start drafting some position players.

I wanted nothing to do with Gorman at the Braves’ spot—flashes of Cody Johnson—but he’s sure currently exercising the upside that accompanied his risk-profile.

You mean like Waters, Cumberland, Riley, and Jenista? Stewart not signing was unfortunate... but we don't know specifics regarding the injury, etc... Had he been healthy and what we thought, he was easily a higher raw talent that most teams would have chosen over Gorman. The Braves have been drafting plenty of position players. More importantly, they have been developing them.

Agreed. And while the pitching mantra can be downright maddening, it's caused the Braves to be arguably one of two or three teams that 25 other teams envy. At the trade deadline our 15th ranked prospect traded traded would have made me feel bad....that's how deep pitching has the Braves positioned for the future.

FG Chat had a few Braves tidbits.

They thought Pache was at minimum a 2 win player in CF, and more likely a good bit more than that as they believe the power will come and will hit enough.

Someone thought Drew Waters was getting too much hype and Eric corrected them to say that players that will stick up the middle, hit for power and avg, are really really valuable pieces (and he believes Drew will). So the hype was justified in his opinion.

The exit velocities posted by Waters make him our best position prospect IMO. Couple they with what appears to be a pretty good idea at the plate and plus athleticism makes his ceiling pretty dam high.

The emergence of Waters and Pache make bringing Markakis back one a one year deal with an option the smart play imo. Go big at 3b and see if they can show they are ready after another full year.

Where are you getting MiLB exit velocities?

I’d rather target a Of with more upside . The Mutts got two

Just from the occasional twitter feed of a homer or double. Not average velocities. Still he’s had some reports of homers at 112-115.

If accurate, those are impressive.

The Braves have hit only 4 balls 112+ mph this year, all by Acuna. The hardest hit ball all year was by Acuna at 113.9 mph.

Color me shocked that Waters is hitting balls that hard on a semi-frequent basis.

Kyle Muller posting pictures on social media from the Atlanta airport. Maybe he's being promoted to Double A? Wouldn't make much sense for him to be there otherwise.

It would check out since they're in TN, but a bump to MS wouldn't make sense.

Maybe he had a personal issue to handle?

Could be. But he's from Texas, so not sure what connection he would have to Atlanta that could be a personal or family issue.

Pache was posting similar stuff the other day when his promotion happened, so I'm guessing that's what it is. It does seem aggressive though.

If true yes that would seem very agressive. I would think Anderson or Wentz would be promoted first and honestly none of them need to be. Let them all stick together with Tucker Davidson and Jeremy Walker and move up year by year.

That is one of the tweets I saw. There was another similar posted as well. Don’t recall by who.

Either way. Being able to hit a baseball 111 or 112+ and produce results like Waters is producing shows the potential for elite bat speed. As pointed out that only Acuna had produced harder contact at any point this year.
