The Atlanta Braves promoted Ralph “Rocket” Wheeler to manager of the High-A Florida Fire Frogs today replacing Paul Runge the team announced via press release. Runge has been reassigned within the organization as a roving instructor. Wheeler will be in the dugout tonight when the Fire Frogs take on Fort Myers.
Wheeler is no stranger to the dugout having spent his first 14 seasons in the organization as a minor league manager. He managed the club’s high-A team from 2006-2010 and and was Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year in 2008 after helping lead Myrtle Beach to a franchise-record 89 wins. He managed this same club last season when it was based in Carolina.
Wheeler spent the first half of this season as an on-field advisor for the Braves. No word yet on the reasoning behind this move.
