Time to extent La Stella

Tommy La Stella is just a slimmer, less ADD-riddled version of Marcus Giles.

This, too, shall pass.

this guy is walking a lot and not striking out much. what a breath of fresh air.

what are the chances he can play third? with pereza knocking on the door, i could easily see la stella end up at third if he can do it. signing johnson may prove to be brilliant was he'll be a relatively cheap third baseman that can hit good enough. that should be easily movable if it came to it.

i don't expect it but i don't think it would be a bad idea either at this point, but if these guys keep going like they are, pereza and la stella could be batting 1-2 in the lineup next opening day.

I have no idea, but my guess is if he could play 3B, he probably would have already played some 3B in the minors. I always riff on Ockham's Razor in discussions like this. The fact that he hasn't logged any time in the minors or in spring training at 3B would lead one to believe that it's not in the cards.

Geez, turns out the guy looks real good at 2B, and now we gotta move him?

Peraza is the one likely to move to 3rd

I will be curious to see what they do with Peraza over the winter. He will likely go to the instructional league and if they try to move him to 3B, my guess is that is where they would start the process.

La Stella looks fine at 2B and one can never tell about scouting reports, but the question on La Stella was supposedly his defense. If that is true, my guess is if they have found a place he can play adequately, that is where he will stay.

The big difference La Stella v. Peraza is their respective ceilings. If Peraza is indeed a special player, you have to make room for him and if he can't play 3B, it probably puts a dent in La Stella's Atlanta career prospects. It will all sort itself out (at least I hope it does).

Don't forget CF being an option as well, but his defensive ability might be wasted there.

Do we really want 3/4ths of the infield being Simmons/La Stella/Peraza? To me that's not enough offense.

Im fine with defense up the middle to a certain extent, but I don't think it's too much to ask to strive for a .775 or higher 3B if you want to compete. Where is the offense, we can't continue to have Freeman and J-Up shoulder the entire load.

From what I understand, TLS doesn't have the arm to play on the left side of the infield.

Hate to say it, but the wisest course of action might be to trade Simmons when Peraza is ready, especially if he never takes the next step offensively.

if this is a serious post (i'm not sure) than the serious answer is no, we have control over TLS for 5 more years after this one. Plenty of time to see more of him and other guys who may fit in.

Having those cheap players is what will allow us to have big contracta like Freeman and hopefully atleast 1 of justin/heywood. I think La Stella is going to go to left but his strong defensive work in the majors might change that. If Peraza can play cf that's where he needs to go. Wether wr like it or nor the Braves love Johnson and I don't think they want to replace him.

The way I look at it is whether Peraza would be an improvement over the current incumbent. I think in a year or so the answer is likely to be yes with respect to both third and center. I'd love to have Willie Mays in center and Chipper at third. But those aren't the internal choices. There is another possibility, which is to trade one of Peraza/La Stella so we can upgrade another position. We'll have to see how it plays out.

Or CF if we can somehow dump Upton the Elder.

gf, I think we could go that direction IF Heyward develops (continues to develop, whatever) and we could somehow find another CF and swallow hard on Upton the Elder. Much will depend on if Gattis holds up and we continue to get production out of the C position beyond league average. Braves had a history during their run of getting higher than league average production out of CF and C, which allowed them to go a light at the "offensive" positions. But you're hitting on one of the reasons I disliked the Johnson extension.

Wanna guess how many MLB starting 3B have an OPS over .775 this yr???

We need good hitters, regardless of how many homers they hit. If he can hit near .300 with a .350 OBP, he's got a starting position on my team

I don't see any reason to lock up a player that you already have under control for a while unless you think that player will be a superstar and you are trying to get a discount. I liked it with our players until we did it with Chris Johnson. La Stella would be a similar mistake to me. The only reason I could see to do it would be to boost player confidence, team morale, etc.

If we are gonna extend someone I'd consider Minor. Maybe in a year or two I'd consider Wood or Gattis.

Good point.

But we have CJ now. Seems like this kid projects to be a similar high avg guy like CJ, but with defense, walks, and speed. It could still be an upgrade. But the kid is still super young and we just extended CJ.
