1914: Future Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Waddell dies of tuberculous at age 37. He once struck out 349 batters in one season.

1939: Hall of Famer Phil Niekro is born in Blaine, Ohio.

1963: The Mets purchase Duke Snider from the Dodgers for $40,000.

1969: After acquiring him in the expansion draft from the Indians, the Pilots trade Lou Piniella to the Royals for Steve Whitaker and John Gelna.

1970: After ruling the team is bankrupt, Judge Sidney Volinn orders the Seattle Pilots to be sold to a group led by businessman Bud Selig, who immediately moves the franchise to Milwaukee and renames them the Brewers.

1987: The Pirates trade Tony Pena to the Cardinals for Andy Van Slyke, Mike Lavalliere, and Mike Dunne.

1987: Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden enters a rehab program for substance abuse, avoiding a suspension.

1989: Bart Giamatti becomes the seventh commissioner of baseball.

1996: Seven pitches into the Expos/Reds game, umpire John McSherry suffers a fatal heart attack. The game would be postponed.

1996: In the biggest Opening Day comeback in the century, the Mets rally from 6-0 down to defeat the Cardinals 7-6.

2001: The Blue Jays defeat the Rangers 8-1 in the first ever M.L. game played in Puerto Rico.

2013: In a 2-0 Nationals win over the Marlins, 20-year old Bryce Harper becomes the youngest player in M.L. history to homer twice on Opening Day.

1907: Hall of Famer Luke Appling is born in High Point, North Carolina.

1945: Hall of Famer Don Sutton is born in Clio, Alabama.

1972: Mets manager Gil Hodges suffers a fatal heart attack while playing golf in West Palm Beach, Florida.

1976: The Orioles trade Don Baylor, Paul Mitchell, and Mike Torrez to the A's for Reggie Jackson, Ken Holtzman, and Bill Van Bommel. It would be a month before Jackson would report to the Orioles.

1992: The Astros trade Curt Schilling to the Phillies for Jason Grimsley. Schilling would become the Phillies ace for nine seasons while Grimsley would never throw a pitch for the Astros.

1995: The owners accept the players unconditional offer made on March 31st to return to work.

1996: The Yankees defeat the Indians 7-1, marking the first of 1,173 wins for Joe Torre as the team's manager.

1997: The Marlins and Gary Sheffield agree to a six year extension worth $61 million.

2001: Roger Clemens records his 3,509th strikeout, breaking Walter Johnson's A.L. record.

2001: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki makes his debut, become the first Japanese born position player to play in the majors.

2003: In an 8-1 loss to the Twins, the Tigers become the first team in M.L. history to have four pitchers make their M.L. debuts in the same game. Jeremy Bonderman got the start and was followed by fellow rookies Wilfredo Ledezma, Chris Spurling, and Matt Roney.

2003: At 27 years, 249 days old, Alex Rodriguez becomes the youngest player in M.L. history to hit 300 home runs.

2011: The Rangers Ian Kinsler becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit a leadoff home run in their team's first two games of the season.

2011: The Red Sox David Ortiz records his 1,004th RBI as a DH in a 12-5 loss to the Rangers, breaking Edgar Martinez's record.
 
April 3rd:

1966: After being selected in a special draft by the Mets, Tom Seaver signs a deal with a reported $50,000 bonus.

1974: The Indians trade Pedro Guerrero to the Dodgers for Bruce Ellingsen.

1985: The Players Association agrees to the owners proposal to expand the league championship series' to a best of seven.

1987: The Cubs trade Dennis Eckersley and minor leaguer Dan Rohn to the A's for three minor league players.

1989: Future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. doubles in his first M.L. at bat off the A's Dave Stewart.

1994: The Cardinals defeat the Reds 6-4 in the first ever season opener to be played on a Sunday night.

2002: Barry Bonds joins Eddie Mathews as the only players in M.L. history to begin a season with two straight two-homer games.

2005: The Devil Rays Alex Sanchez becomes the first player to be disciplined under baseball's new drug policy. He is suspended ten games.

2007: In the Padres 7-0 win over the Giants, Marcus and Brian Giles bat first and second in the order, making them the first brothers since the Giants Matty and Jesus Alou in 1965 to bat in the first two spot in the lineup.

2009: After being released earlier in the week by the Tigers, Gary Sheffield signs with the Mets.

1911: The MVP Award is introduced and sponsored by auto manufacturer Hugh Chalmers.

1968: MLB decides to delay Opening Day games until after the funeral for Dr. Martin Luther King, Kr., who was assassinated earlier in the day.

1974: In Cincinnati, Hank Aaron hits his 714th career home run, tying Babe Ruth for the all time record.

1988: In the Blue Jays 5-3 win over the Royals, George Bell becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit three home runs on Opening Day.

1994: The Indians defeat the Mariner in 11 innings 4-3 in the first game at Jacobs Field. The Indians Eddie Murray plays his 2,369th game at first base, setting a new M.L. record.

1999: The Rockies defeat the Padres 8-2 in the first M.L. game played in Mexico.

1999: Hall of Famer Early Wynn dies at age 79.

2001: In the Red Sox 3-0 win over the Orioles, Hideo Nomo pitches the earliest no-hitter in M.L. history.

2003: Sammy Sosa becomes the first Latin player, 18th overall, to hit 500 home runs.

2006: The Padres are rained out for the first time since May 12, 1998, a span of 635 straight home games played.

2012: The Reds and Joey Votto agree to a 12 year deal worth $251.5 million.

1925: Babe Ruth collapses at a railroad station in Asheville, North Carolina. He is hospitalized for an operation and is out of the Yankees lineup until May.

1966: The Orioles release Don Larsen.

1972: The players strike cancels the Astros/Reds game, marking the first time in M.L. history Opening Day is delayed.

1976: The Mets and Tom Seaver agree to a three year deal that makes him the first pitcher in M.L. history to make $200,000 a season.

1979: The Orioles beat the White Sox 5-3, marking Earl Weaver's 1,000th managerial win.

1989: In the first inning, the Reds Todd Benzinger's RBI single scoring Barry Larkin ends the M.L. record 59 inning scoreless streak of the Dodgers Orel Hershisher.

1993: The Rockies lose their first game 3-0 to the Mets.

1993: In their first game, the Marlins defeat the Dodgers 6-3.

1998: After losing their first five games, the Diamondbacks defeat the Giants 3-2 for the franchise's first win.

2005: The Nationals lose 8-4 in their first game in Washington since moving from Montreal.

2010: The Red Sox and Josh Beckett agree to a four year extension worth $68 million.

2015: The Braves trade Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton to the Padres for Carlos Quinten (who never played for the Braves), Cameron Maybin, minor leaguers Matt Wisler and Jordan Paroubeck, and the 41st pick in the draft.

1903: Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane is born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

1951: Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven is born in Zeist, Netherlands.

1973: After his death on New Year's Eve in a place crash while helping send relief supplies to earthquake stricken Nicaragua, the Pirates retire Roberto Clemente's #21.

1973: In the Twins 8-3 win over the A's, Tony Oliva becomes the first designated hitter to hit a home run.

1974: The Yankees defeat the Indians 6-1 in the first game they play in Shea Stadium. They will play two seasons in the Mets home ballpark while Yankee Stadium undergoes renovation.

1977: In their first game, the Mariners lose 7-0 to the Angels.

1993: The Blue Jays Jack Morris sets a M.L. record with his 14th straight Opening Day start. He takes the loss as the Mariners beat the Blue Jays 8-1.

2005: The Nationals defeat the Phillies 7-3 for their first win since moving from Montreal to Washington.

2015: The Mets Bartolo Colon, at age 41, becomes the oldest pitcher to start on Opening Day. He leads the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Nationals.

1969: Ted Williams makes his managerial debut for the Senators in an 8-4 loss to the Yankees.

1970: In their first game, the Brewers lose to the Angels 12-0.

1977: In the Blue Jays 9-5 win over the White Sox, Al Wood become the first player in M.L. history to hit a pinch-home run on Opening Day. It was also the Blue Jays first win as a franchise.

1979: The Astros Ken Forsch pitches the earliest no-hitter in M.L. history in a victory over the Braves. He joins Bob as the first brothers in M.L. history to both pitch a no-hitter.

1984: The Tigers Jack Morris pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the White Sox.

2000: In the 15 games played, a M.L. record 57 home runs are hit.

2000: The Astros lose to the Phillies 4-1 in the first game at Enron Field.

2012: The Tigers Octavio Dotel sets a M.L. record by appearing with his 13th team. The pitcher had also played for the Mets, Astros, A's, Yankees, Royals, Braves, White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, and Cardinals.

1946: Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter is born inn Hertford, North Carolina.

1954: Hall of Famer Gary Carter is born in Culver City, California.

1963: Pete Rose makes his M.L. debut, going 0-3 with a walk and run scored in the Reds 5-2 win over the Pirates.

1966: The Dodgers and Astros play the first baseball game on "AstroTurf" in Houston's Astrodome.

1969: In their first game, the Seattle Pilots defeat the Angels 4-3.

1974: Hank Aaron hits 715th career home run off the Dodgers Al Downing, becoming baseball's all time home run king.

1975: In the Indians 5-3 win over the Yankees, Frank Robinson becomes the first black manager in M.L. history.

1993: In the seventh inning of the Indians 15-5 win over the Yankees, Carlos Baerga becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same inning.

1994: Dodgers pitcher Chan Ho Park becomes the first Korean-born player to appear in a M.L. game.

2011: After he is informed that he is facing a 100 game suspension for a second positive drug test, Manny Ramirez, as a member of the Rays, announces his retirement.

2015: The Dodgers Adrian Gonzalez becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit five home runs in the first three games of the season.

1912: The Red Sox in an abbreviated exhibition game defeat Harvard University 2-0 in the first game at Fenway Park.

1913: The Dodgers lose to the Phillies 1-0 in the first game at Ebbets Field.

1916: The Red Sox trade Tris Speaker to the Indians for Sam Jones, Fred Thomas, and $55,000 cash.

1947: Commissioner Happy Chandler suspends Dodgers manager Leo Durocher for one season for actions detrimental to baseball, including associating with known gamblers.

1959: In a 9-2 loss to the Senators, the Orioles become the first team in M.L. history to turn a triple play on Opening Day.

1964: The Cardinals trade Jimmie Coker and Gary Kolb to the Braves for Bob Uecker.

2001: Hall of Famer Willie Stargell dies at age 61.

2009: Hours after pitching six shutout innings against the A's, Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart is killed in a hit and run car crash. Adenhart was 22 years old.
 
April 10th:

1913: Walter Johnson gives up an unearned run in the first inning of the Senators 2-1 win over the Highlanders. He would not allow a run for his next 56 innings pitched.

1947: The Dodgers announce they have purchased the contract of Jackie Robinson from their farm team in Montreal.

1962: The Houston Colt .45's defeat the Cubs 11-2 in their first game.

1971: The Phllies defeat the Expos 4-1 in the first game at Veterans Stadium.

1973: The Royals defeat the Rangers 12-1 in the first game at Royals Stadium.

1977: In the eighth inning of the Indians 19-9 win over the Red Sox, the two teams set s M.L. record for runs scored in one inning. The Indians scored 13 with the Red Sox scoring nine.

1981: In his first game with the White Sox, Carlton Fisk hits a three run homer in the eighth to tie the game against his former Red Sox team. The White Sox score two in the ninth to win 5-3.

1989: In an 8-0 Blue Jays win over the Yankees, Dave Stieb pitches his third one-hitter in his last four starts.

2000: Ken Griffey, Jr. becomes the younest player in M.L. history to record 400 home runs.

2003: In the Astros 4-2 win over the Reds, Craig Biggio hits his 31st leadoff home run, breaking Bobby Bonds' N.L. record.

2006: The Red Sox and David Ortiz agree to a four year extension worth $52 million.

2012: The Marlins suspend manager Ozzie Guillen five games after he made comments praising Fidel Castro in an interview.

2013: The Red Sox streak of home sellouts ends at 820 regular season games.

1912: The Giants Rube Marquard lead New York to an 18-3 win over the Dodgers, which for him, starts a 19 game winning streak.

1961: In the Red Sox 5-2 loss to the A's, Carl Yastrzemski records a single in his M.L. debut.

1962: The Mets lose 11-4 to the Cardinals in their first game.

1990: The Angels Mark Langston and Mike Witt combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Mariners.

1994: The Rangers lose to the Brewers 4-3 in the first game played in The Ballpark in Arlington.

1996: With the Braves 2-1 loss to the Padres, Greg Maddux's M.L. record 18-game road winning streak ends.

1965: The Astros lose to the Phillies 2-0 in the first regular season game at the Astrodome.

1966: The Braves lose to the Pirates 3-2 in the first game played in Atlanta.

1972: The first players strike ends when the owners agree to salary arbitration in the new CBA as well as a $500,00 increase in pension fund payments.

1988: The Orioles name Frank Robinson to replace Cal Ripken, Sr. as manager.

2002: Barry Bonds hits his 574th career home run, passing Harmon Killebrew for sixth on the all time list.

2004: Barry Bonds hits his 660th home run, tying his godfather Willie Mays for third on the all time list.

2010: The Twins defeat the Red Sox 5-2 in the first game at Target Field.

1939: In an exhibition in Norfolk, VA against the Dodgers, Lou Gehrig homers twice in a 14-12 loss. They turn out to be the last two home runs Gehrig ever hits.

1953: In Cincinnati, the Braves beat the Reds 2-0 in their first game since moving from Boston to Milwaukee.

1954: The A's Forrest Jacobs becomes the first rookie in M.L. history to collect four hits in an Opening Day debut.

1962: At The Polo Grounds, the Mets lose their first home game to the Pirates 4-3.

1963: Pete Rose collects his first M.L. hit, doing so off the Pirates Bob Friend.

1970: At their home opener against the Brewers, the A's use colored bases in their 2-1 win. The MLB Rules Committee would quickly after ban the use of the colored bases.

1984: Pete Rose doubles off the Expos Jerry Koosman to record his 4,000th hit.

1993: In the Cardinals 9-7 win over the Dodgers, Lee Smith records his 358th career save, passing Jeff Reardon for the all time lead.

2004: Barry Bonds hits his 661st career home, moving past Willie Mays for third on the all time list.

2009: Hall of Fame Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas dies at age 73.

2011: The Braves Chipper Jones joins Eddie Murray (1,917) and Mickey Mantle (1,509) as the only switch hitters in M.L. history to record 1,500 RBIs.

1910: William Howard Taft becomes the first U.S. President to throw out a ceremonial first pitch, doing so before the Senators 3-0 Opening Day win over the A's.

1911: Hall of Famer Addie Joss dies at age 31 as a result of tuberculous meningitis.

1917: The White Sox Eddie Cicotte pitches a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over the Browns.

1925: The Indians set a M.L. record for run scored on Opening Day in a 21-4 win over the Browns.

1925: WGN broadcasts the first live regular season game, an 8-2 Cubs win over the Pirates.

1941: All time hits leader Pete Rose is born in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1960: On Opening Day, Eddie Sawyer resigns as Phillies manager and is replaced by Gene Mauch, who had been managing the Red Sox AAA team in Minneapolis.

1966: Hall of Famer Greg Maddux is born in San Angelo, Texas.

1968: The Pirates Jim Bunning becomes the first pitcher since Cy Young to record 1,000 strikeouts in both leagues.

1969: In the first regular season game played outside the U.S., the Expos defeat the Cardinals 8-7 in front of 29,184 fans at Montreal's Jarry Park.

1993: The Cardinals Lee Smith records his 301st save in the National League, setting a senior circuit record.

2001: A new M.L. record is set with 11 one-run games taking place.

1942: Cubs pitcher Hiram Bithorn becomes the first Puerto Rico born player in the majors. He pitches two scoreless innings in a 4-2 loss to the Cardinals.

1947: Jackie Robinson break baseball's color barrier, making his debut with the Dodgers. He goes 0-3, but scores a run in a 5-3 win over the Braves.

1947: In his N.L debut, Hank Greenberg drives in the only run for the Pirates in their 1-0 win over the Cubs.

1954: In their first game in Baltimore since leaving St. Louis as the Browns, the Orioles beat the White Sox 3-1.

1958: In the first game for both teams since leaving New York for California, the Giants defeat the Dodgers in San Francisco's Seals Stadium 8-0.

1959: Bob Gibson makes his M.L. debut, pitching the last two innings in the Cardinals 5-0 loss to the Dodgers.

1968: The Astros defeat the 1-0 in 24 innings, marking the longest scoreless game in M.L. history.

1976: In their first game in the newly renovated Yankee Stadium, the Yankees beat the Twins 11-4.

2000: Cal Ripken, Jr. records his 3,000th hit.

2005: The Nationals defeat the Diamondbacks 5-3 in the first game played in Washington, D.C. since September 30, 1971.

1899: At age 26, John McGraw leads the Orioles to a 5-3 win over the Giants, a team he would manage for 30 years. It was the first of 2,763 managerial wins for the future Hall of Famer.

1923: The Yankees defeat the Red Sox 4-1 in the first game at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth hit the park's first home run.

1925: Dodgers owner Charles Ebbets dies at age 65.

1939: Broadcaster Red Barber calls his first Dodgers game, a 7-3 loss to the Giants.

1947: Team scout Burt Shotton is named to manage the Dodgers in place of Leo Durocher, who had been suspended for the season by Commissioner Happy Chandler for acts "unbecoming of a major league manager".

1950: At Sportsman's Park, the Cardinals defeat the Pirates 4-2 in the first Opening Day game played at night.

1958: In front of 78,672 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Dodgers defeat the Giants 6-5 in their first home game in California.

1960: Ted Williams becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer in four different decades.

1981: An International League contest between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings becomes the longest professional baseball game ever played. The game, at 4:07 AM is suspended after 32 innings played and tied 2-2. The game would be completed later in the season, with the Red Sox scoring the winning run in the 33rd inning.

1982: The Braves defeat the Astros 6-5 to set a N.L. record with their 11th straight win to start the season.

1987: Mike Schmidt hits his 500th home run.

1991: The White Sox lose to the Tigers 16-0 in the first game at the new Comiskey Park.

2001: The Devil Rays replace manager Larry Rothschild with Hal McRae.

2002: The Brewers fire manager Davey Lopes and replace him on an interim basis with Jerry Royster.

2007: The White Sox Mark Buehrle pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Rangers.

1890: The Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later known as the Dodgers) lose to the Boston Beaneaters (later known as the Braves) 15-9 in their first N.L. game.

1900: In a game that set the record for the most combined runs scored on Opening Day, the Phillies defeat the Beaneaters 19-17 in ten innings.

1979: After a 6-3 loss to the Orioles, Yankee teammates Goose Gossage and Cliff Johnson brawl in the clubhouse. Gossage sustains a sprained ligament in his left thumb that keeps him out until July. Johnson would be traded to the Indians in mid-June.

1981: The A's defeat the Mariners 6-1 to set a M.L. record with 11 straight Opening Day wins.

1997: The Cardinals defeat the Padres 1-0 in the first M.L. game played in Hawaii.

1999: A sore back put Cal Ripken, Jr. on the disabled list for the first time in his 19 year M.L. career.

1910: The Indians Addie Joss pitches his second career no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

1912: In the first game at Fenway Park, the Red Sox in 11 innings defeat the Highlanders 7-6.

1916: The Cubs defeat the Reds 7-6 in 11 innings in their first game at Weeghman Park, which in 1926 was renamed Wrigley Field.

1939: In his M.L. debut, Ted Williams goes 1-4.

2013: The Red Sox play a doubleheader against the Royals, the first games in Boston since the Boston Marathon bombings. David Ortiz stirs the crowd in pregame by saying this is our ------- city. During the eighth inning of the first game, Neal Diamond surprises the Fenway crowd by performing the tradition "Sweet Caroline" live at the ballpark.
