August 21st:

1881: During the Chcago White Stockings (future Cubs) 11-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons, Abner Dalrymple becomes the first player in M.L. history to be intentionally walked with the bases loaded.

1926: The White Sox Ted Lyons pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Red Sox. The game takes just 67 minutes to play.

1931: Babe Ruth hits his 600th career home run.

1947: The first Little League World Series is played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The hometown Maynard Midgets win the tournament.

1951: The owners elect Major General Emmett O'Donnell to be the new commissioner. However, President Harry Truman overrides the decision, saying he is needed in Korea in his post as commander of bombers.

1962: After being released earlier in the day by the Yankees, Robin Roberts signs with the Orioles.

1975: Rick and Paul Resuchel become the first brothers to pitch a shutout in M.L., helping the Cubs to a 6-0 win over the Dodgers.

1977: In his first game at Shea Stadium since being traded from the Mets, Tom Seaver pitches a six-hitter and strikes out 11 in a 5-1 Reds win. Seaver would also double and score two runs.

1980: A's owner Charley Finley announces the sale of the team to Walter A. Hass, Jr. and Roy Eisenhardt.

1982: In the Brewers 3-2 win over the Mariners, Rollie Fingers becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 300 saves.

2013: Ichiro Suzuki records his 4,000th professional hit. He had 1,278 hits with the Orix Blue Waves in Japan.
 
August 22nd:

1886: Thanks to a stray dog pulling at the leg of Reds center fielder Abner Powell, Louisville's Chicken Wolf hits a game winning home run.

1917: In a 22 inning game against the Dodgers, the Pirates Carson Bigbee sets a M.L. record with 11 at bats. It was also the Pirates fourth straight extra inning game which set a N.L. record.

1939: Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski is born in Southampton, New York.

1949: The Yankees purchase Johnny Mize for $40,000.

1961: Roger Maris becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit his 50th home run of the season in August.

1965: Thinking Dodger catcher Johnny Roseboro's throws back to Sandy Koufax are too close to his head, Juan Marichal attacks him with his bat. Roseboro suffers a cut on his head as the incident start a 14 minute brawl.

1987: During the seventh inning of the Rangers 6-4 win over the White Sox, catcher Gino Petralli ties a M.L. record for one inning by committing four passed balls.

1989: With a swing and a miss by Rickey Henderson on a 96 MPH fastball, Nolan Ryan becomes the first and only pitcher in M.L. history to record 5,000 strikeouts.

1999: Mark McGwire becomes the first player in M.L. history to record four straight seasons of 50 home runs.

2000: Pitching a scoreless 12th inning in a Rockies 7-6 victory over the Braves, catcher Brent Mayne becomes the first position player to be a winning pitcher since 1968 (Rocky Colavito).

2007: Albert Pujols becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first seven seasons.

2011: With two outs in the eighth inning, the Cardinals Matt Holliday is forced to leave when a moth gets stuck in his ear. Treated in the trainers room, a utensil is able to get the moth, still alive, out of the ear.

2012: A's pitcher Bartolo Colon is suspended 50 game due to a positive test for testosterone.
 
August 23rd:

1906: With a 4-1 victory over the Senators, the White Sox set an A.L. record with their 19th straight win.

1907: The Pirates Howie Camnitz pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Giants in a game shortened to five innings.

1936: At age 17, Bob Feller makes his first M.L. start. He strikes out the first eight batters he faces, records 15 total strikeouts in the Indians 4-1 win over the Browns.

1958: In the Dodgers 10-1 win over the Braves, Gil Hodges set a new N.L. record with his 14th career grand slam.

1958: In the White Sox 7-1 win over the Yankees, Nellie Fox's streak of 98 games without striking out ends.

1982: The Mariners Gaylord Perry is ejected after being caught applying a foreign substance to a ball. Thought he had been suspected of doing so for years, it was the first time he was caught.

1989: Pete Rose agrees to a lifetime banishment from baseball due to allegations he bet on games as Reds manager.

1998: Barry Bonds hits his 400th career home run. He becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 400 home runs and steal 400 bases.

2001: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to strikeout 300 batters in four straight seasons.

2002: Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm dies at age 80.
 
August 24th:

1919: With two outs in the top of the ninth, Indians pitcher Ray Caldwell is struck by lightning and knocked unconscious. Needing one more out, he refuses to leave the game. He gets that final out to end a 2-1 victory over the A's.

1951: In another one of Bill Veeck's ideas, a thousand fans behind the Browns dugout are given yes and no cards to vote on coaching decisions. The fans make the right calls as the Browns beat the A's 5-3.

1960: Cal Ripken, Jr. is born in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

1963: ABC broadcasts the Little League World Series, marking the first time the event was shown on television. In the game, Grenada Hills, CA defeats Stratford, CT by a 2-1 score.

1971: Ernie Banks his the last of his 512 home runs in the Cubs 5-4 loss to the Reds.

1975: The Giants Ed Halicki pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Mets.

1975: The Dodgers Davey Lopes sets a M.L. record with his 38th straight stolen base. The streak ends in the 12th inning by the Expos Gary Carter in the Dodgers 5-3 loss in 14 innings.

1980: Gene Mauch resigns as Twins manager and is replaced by third base coach John Goryl.

1985: The Yankees Don Baylor is hit by a pitch for the 189th time, tying the M.L. record.

1989: Pete Rose signs a five page agreement with Commissioner Bart Giamatti, agreeing to a lifetime ban from baseball for his alleged betting on games. While Rose agrees to the banishment, he does not admit to gambling.

2000: In a fifth rehab start in the minors, Devil Rays pitcher Tony Saunders once again breaks his arm throwing a pitch. He originally broke his arm during a game against the Rangers the prior season.

2006: The Tigers Sean Casey is thrown out on a ground ball that made it to left field. Casey didn't run out of the batters box and started heading back to the dugout, believing he was robbed of a hit by White Sox third baseman Joe Crede. However, the ball actually glanced off Crede's glove and outfield Pablo Ozuna threw to first base. By the time Casey realized what happened, he was thrown out on the play scored 5-7-3.

2007: The Padres Greg Maddux becomes the first pitcher to win ten games over 20 straight seasons.
 
August 25th:

1913: In a 3-0 loss to the A's, Browns pitcher Carl Weilman becomes the first player in M.L. history to strike out six straight times in a game.

1929: By placing a microphone inside the mask of home plate umpire Charles Rigler, the Giants become the first team to employ a public address system.

1936: In the first inning of a 20-3 win over the Cardinals, the Braves set a single inning record with seven doubles.

1946: Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers is born in Steubenville, Ohio.

1952: The Tigers Virgil Trucks pitches his second no-hitter this season in a 1-0 win over the Yankees.

1967: The Twins Dean Chance pitches his second no-hitter of the month in a 2-1 win over the Indians.

1983: The Louisville Redbirds become the first team to draw a million fans in a season.

1985: In the Mets 9-3 win over the Padres, Dwight Gooden (20 years, 9 months, 9 days old) becomes the youngest 20 game winner in M.L. history.

1991: In the Cardinals 5-2 win over the Dodgers, Lee Smith records his 300th save.

2005: With the Cardinals 6-3 win over the Pirates, Tony La Russa records his 2,195th managerial win, moving past Sparky Anderson for third on the all time list.

2008: The Rangers trade Eddie Guardado to the Twins for pitcher Mark Hamburger.

2012: The Red Sox trade Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto, and cash considerations to the Dodgers for James Loney, Allen Webster, Ivan DeJesus, Jr. and two players to be named later.
 
August 26th:

1916: The A's Joe Bush pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Indians.

1939: A doubleheader split between the Reds and Dodgers marks the first time baseball had been televised. NBC broadcasts the game on experimental station W2XBS.

1947: The Dodgers Dan Bankhead becomes the first black pitcher in M.L. history. In 3.1 innings of relief, He gives up ten hits and six runs in a 16-3 loss to the Pirates.

1962: The Twins Jack Kralick pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the A's.

1972: The Cubs Ron Santo records his 2,000th hit.

1989: Trumbull, CT defeats Chinese Taipei 5-2 to becomes the first American team to win The Little League World Series since 1983.

1991: The Royals Bret Saberhagen pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the White Sox.

1996: The Mets fire manager Dallas Green and replace him with Bobby Valentine.

2002: The Yankees 10-3 win over the Rangers becomes the first MLB game to be streamed live on the internet. About 30,000 fans watch the game on MLB.com.

2003: The Padres trade starter Oliver Perez and prospect Jason Bay to the Pirates for outfielder Brian Giles.

2004: Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first and only player in M.L. history to collect 200 hits in each of his first four seasons.

2007: Dalton Carriker hits a walk-off home run in extra innings (8th inning) to give Warner Robins, GA a 3-2 win over Tokyo, Japan and the Little League World Series championship.
 
August 27th:

1911: The White Sox Ed Walsh pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Red Sox.

1938: The Yankees Monte Pearson pitches a no-hitter in a 13-0 win over the Indians.

1952: In a 10-5 loss to the Cubs, the Dodgers set a N.L. record with 23 straight games in which they turned a double play.

1977: In the Rangers 8-2 win over the Yankees, Bump Willis and Toby Harrah hit back to back inside the park home runs on consecutive pitches, making it the only time to happen in M.L. history.

1978: The Reds Joe Morgan becomes the first player in M.L. history with 200 home runs and 500 stolen bases.

1982: In a 5-4 A's loss to the Brewers, Rickey Henderson breaks Lou Brock's single season record of 118 stolen bases.

2000: In the Angels 10-9 win over the Indians, Tim Salmon joins Garrett Anderson, Mo Vaughn, and Troy Glaus with 30 home runs. That makes the Angels the first team in A.L. history with four 30 home run hitters in one season.

2005: The Dodgers Jeff Kent becomes the first second baseman in M.L. history with 300 home runs.

2007: The Astros fire manager Phil Garner and replace him with bench coach Cecil Cooper. General manager Tim Purpura is also fired.

2013: The Mets trade Marlon Byrd, John Buck, and cash to the Pirates for minor leaguer Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later (Vic Black).
 
August 28th:

1884: Mickey Welch of the New York Gothams sets a M.L. record by striking out nine straight Cleveland Blues batters.

1945: Branch Rickey meets with Jackie Robinson about joining the Dodgers and integrating baseball.

1977: In the Dodgers 11-0 win over the Cardinals, Steve Garvey joins Lou Boudreau, Joe Adcock, and Willie Stargell to collect five extra base hits in a game.

1990: The Cubs Ryne Sandberg becomes the first second baseman in M.L. history with consecutive 30 home run seasons.

2003: During the Mets 3-1 win over the Braves, 20 year old Jose Reyes becomes the youngest player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate.

2003: In the Dodgers 6-3 win over the Astros, Eric Gagne sets a new M.L. record with his 44th straight save.

2008: The Cubs/Phillies game at Wrigley becomes the first to have use of replay to review any home run, fair or foul, and fan interference calls.
 
August 29th:

1918: With a 1-0 win over the Reds, the Cubs clinch the N.L. pennant.

1951: The Yankees trade Lew Burdette and $50,000 to the Braves for Johnny Sain.

1966: The Beatles play their final concert together at the San Francisco Giants home ballpark, Candlestick Park.

1971: Hank Aaron becomes the first player in N.L. history to drive in at least 100 runs in 11 different seasons.

1977: Lou Brock steals his 893rd base, breaking Ty Cobb's M.L. record.

1985: The Yankees Don Baylor is hit by a pitch for the 190th time, breaking the A.L. record.

1989: In the first game that reigning Cy Young Award winners faced each other, Frank Viola outduels Orel Hershisher in the Mets 1-0 win over the Dodgers.

1993: George Brett joins Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players with 200 stolen bases, 3,000 hits, and 300 home runs.

1996: With Bobby Bonilla hitting his 20th home run of the season, the Orioles become the first team in M.L. history to have seven players to do so. The other 20 homer hitters on the Orioles were Rafael Palmerio, Cal Ripken Jr, Roberto Alomar, Brady Anderson, B.J. Surhoff, and Chris Hoiles.

2006: The Astros and Roy Oswalt agree to a five year extension worth $73 million.

2008: With a 14-3 win over the Orioles, the Rays assure themselves of their first winning season in their 11 year history.

2010: After initially ruling it a ground rule double, the umpires after replay call a home run for Brian McCann, giving the Braves a 7-6 win over the Marlins. It marked the first time a replay call resulted in a walk-off win.
 
August 30th:

1905: In his first M.L. at bat, Ty Cobb collects the first of his 4,189 career hits off Jack Chesbro helping the Tigers to a 5-3 win over the Highlanders.

1912: The Browns Earl Hamilton pitches a no-hitter in a 5-1 win over the Tigers.

1916: The Red Sox Dutch Leonard pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Browns.

1918: Ted Williams is born in San Diego, California.

1928: Tris Speaker strikes out in his final at bat. He ends his 22-year Hall of Fame career with a .345 average.

1953: In the opening game of a doubleheader against the Pirates, the Braves set a M.L. record with eight home runs in a 19-4 win. In the nightcap, the Braves hit four more in an 11-5 win, setting the record for home runs in a doubleheader.

1965: Recovering from a broken hip, Casey Stengel resigns as Mets manager, ending a 56 year career in baseball as a player, coach, and manager.

1975: The Braves fire manager Clyde King and replace him with scout Connie Ryan.

1984: The Red Sox Jim Rice breaks the M.L. record by grounding into his 33rd double play of the season.

1984: The Expos fire manager Bill Virdon and hire the manager he succeeded, Jim Fanning.

1998: With a 7-5 defeat to the Reds, the Marlins lose their 89th game of the season, the most for a defending World Series champion.

1998: Toms River, NJ defeat Japan 12-9 to become the first American team to win the Little League World Series since 1993.

2000: The Braves 5-2 victory over the Reds marks the 1,600th managerial win for Bobby Cox, passing Tommy Lasorda for 14th on the all time list.

2002: With the deadline hours away, Commissioner Bud Selig announces the players and owners had reached an agreement to avoid another work stoppage, agreeing to a new four year CBA.

2006: The Padres acquire David Wells from the Red Sox for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

2006: The Red Sox Curt Schilling records his 3,000th strikeout.
 
August 31st:

1915: The Cubs Jimmy Lavender pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants.

1935: Hall of Famer Frank Robinson is born in Beaumont, Texas.

1935: The White Sox Vern Kennedy pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Indians. Kennedy also hit a three run triple in the win.

1950: Gil Hodges hits four home runs in the Dodgers 19-3 win over the Braves.

1959: Sandy Koufax sets a N.L. record for a nine inning game with 18 strikeouts in the Dodgers 5-2 win over the Giants.

1990: In the Mariners 5-2 win over the Royals, Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey, Jr. become the first father and son in M.L. history to play in the same lineup.

1990: The Astros trade relief pitcher Larry Andersen to the Red Sox for minor league first baseman Jeff Bagwell.

1992: The A's trade Jose Canseco to the Rangers for Ruben Sierra, Jeff Russell, Bobby Witt, and cash.

1997: Andruw Jones' grand slam against the Red Sox is the tenth for the Braves this season, breaking the N.L. record.

2000: The Reds trade Dante Bichette to the Red Sox for two minor league pitchers.

2001: The team from Bronx, New York is stripped of their wins in the Little League World Series after the organization finds out star pitcher Danny Almonte was 14 years old, not 12, as eligibility rules state.

2004: The Indians rout the Yankees 22-0, tying the M.L. record for the largest shutout.

2005: The Marlins Jeremy Hermida joins Bill Duggleby in 1898 as the only players in M.L. history to hit a grand slam in their first M.L. at bat.

2006: With A.J. Pierzynski's homer in the sixth inning of the White Sox 5-3 loss to the Devil Rays, they become the first team in M.L. history to hit at least 200 homer runs for seven straight seasons.

2008: The Blue Jays trade David Eckstein to the Diamondbacks pitching prospect Chad Beck.

2010: The Mets trade Jeff Francoeur to the Rangers for infielder Joaquin Arias.

2010: Aroldis Chapman makes his M.L. debut, pitching a perfect inning in the Reds 8-4 win over the Brewers. Four of his pitches were clocked over 100 MPH.

2011: In the Braves 3-1 win over the Nationals, Craig Kimbrel records his 41st save, breaking the M.L. record for rookies.

2014: The White Sox trade Adam Dunn to the A's for pitching prospect Nolan Sanburn.
