July 20th:

1906: Brooklyn's Mal Eason pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Cardinals.

1925: In a 4-3, 10-inning win over the Cubs, Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance struck out 17 hitters.

1941: In a 12-6, 17-inning win over the Tigers, the Yankees Joe DiMaggio hit three doubles and also homered.

1958: In the first of a doubleheader, the Tigers Jim Bunning pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Red Sox.

1970: The Dodgers Bill Singer pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Phillies.
 
July 21st:

1921: In the Indians 17-8 win over the Yankees, the two teams combined for an A.L. record 16 doubles. The Indians had nine of them.

1945: The Tigers and A's played 24 innings with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. The Tigers Les Mueller pitched 19 2/3 innings.

1956: The Pirates defeated the Reds 4-3, ending Brooks Lawrence's 13-game winning streak. Roberto Clemente hit a three run homer to give Pittsburgh the win.

1967: Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx dies at age 59.

1973: In the third inning of an 8-4 loss to the Phillies, the Braves Hank Aaron hits his 700th career home run.

1975: In a 6-2 loss to the Astros, the Mets Joe Torre grounded into four double plays.
 
July 22nd:

1905: In the first of a doubleheader, the A's Weldon Henley pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Browns.

1909: Ty Cobb steals three bases in one inning to help the Tigers beat the Red Sox 6-0.

1923: Walter Johnson becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

1935: For the second straight game, the Red Sox Wes Ferrell ends the game with a homer, helping Boston beat the Browns 2-1. The previous day, he hit a pinch-home run to beat the Tigers 7-6.

1962: In a 7-3 win over the Red Sox, the White Sox Floyd Robinson goes 6-6 with all the hits being singles.

1962: In losing both games of a doubleheader against the Reds, the Mets have four baserunners thrown out at home plate.

1967: In the ninth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals, the Braves set a M.L. record by using five pitchers in one inning. Ken Johnson, Ramon Hernandez, Claude Raymond, Dick Kelly, and Cecil Upshaw all pitch in that inning.

1973: Reds All-Star infielder Dave Concepcion breaks his ankle, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.

2000: The Rangers/Mariners game at the new Safeco Field gets delayed 54 minutes because the retractable roof fails to close during a rain storm.

2007: Mike Coolbaugh, first base coach for the Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League, is killed when he is struck in the head by a line drive. It is the second fatality in professional baseball history.

2012: Barry Larkin, who played all 19 years of his M.L. career with the Reds, is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Also inducted is long time Cubs third baseman Ron Santo, who passed away in 2010.
 
July 23rd:

1918: Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese is born in Ekron, Kentucky.

1925: In an 11-7 Yankees win over the Senators, Lou Gehrig hits four home runs, including the first of his record 23 grand slams.

1936: Hall of Famer Don Drysdale is born in Van Nuys, California.

1939: In a 16-3 loss to the Tigers, the A's Harry O'Neill appears in his only M.L. game. In 1945 he would be killed in combat at Iwo Jima. He was one of only two player to die in combat.

1944: In the eighth inning of a doubleheader nightcap against the Cubs, Giants manager Mel Ott tells pitcher Andy Hansen to walk Bill Nicholson, even though the bases were loaded. Nicholson had homered four times during the doubleheader. The strategy backfires as the Cubs scored three more runs to tie the game.

1962: Jackie Robinson, Bob Feller, Bill McKechine, and Edd Roush are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1976: In a 4-3 loss to the Brewers, the Orioles Frank Robinson ties the A.L. record by homering in his sixth straight game (since broken).

1976: Sadaharu Oh of the Yomiuri Giants in Japan hits his 700th career home run.

2000: Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes ties a M.L. record for homers allowed in one inning by giving up four to the Astros in the second inning.

2000: First baseman Tony Perez, manager Sparky Anderson, and announcer Marty Brennaman, all of the Reds, are joined by Carlton Fisk as inductees into the Hall of Fame.

2009: The White Sox Mark Buehrle pitches a perfect game in a 5-0 win over the Rays.
 
July 24th:

1931: The Dodgers Babe Herman hits for the cycle. It's the second time in he did so in a ten day span.

1933: The Cardinals fire manager Gabby Street, who led the team to the N.L. Pennant in 1930 and 1931. Second baseman Frank Frisch is named player/manager.

1948: The White Sox Pat Seerey sets a record by striking out seven times in a doubleheader.

1956: Hank Greenberg and Joe Cronin are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1965: In what would turn out to be Casey Stengal's final game as manager, the Mets lose to the Phillies 5-1. The next morning, the 75-year old Stengal fractured his hip, forcing him to retire.

1968: In a 2-1 loss to the A's, the White Sox Hoyt Wilhelm breaks Cy Young's record by appearing in his 907th career game.

1970: The Mets Tommy Agee steals home in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat the Dodgers 2-1.

1978: Billy Martin resigns as Yankees manager and is replaced by Bob Lemon.

1979: The Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski hits his 400th career home run.

1983: George Brett hits a home run in the ninth inning that appeared to give the Royals the lead over the Yankees. Afterwards, the homer is disallowed because of too much pine tar on the bat. Brett would run out of the dugout in a rage over the call. A.L. President Lee McPhail overrules the decision and the game is resumed on August 18th, with the Royals winning 4-3.

2007: The Astros Craig Biggio announces he will retire at the end of the season.

2011: Roberto Alomar, Burt Blyleven, and former GM Pat Gillick are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
 
July 25th:

1890: At age 23, pitching for Tri-state against McKeesport (PA), Cy Young pitches a no-hitter and strikes out 18 hitters. It would be his final minor league appearance before his M.L. career begins.

1908: In a 7-2 win over the Giants, the Pirates Honus Wagner goes 5-5 against another future Hall of Famer in Christy Mathewson.

1930: In a 14-1 win over the Indians, the A's pull of triple-steals twice, doing it in the first and fourth innings. That season, the A's as a team stole only 48 bases.

1931: In a 6-3 A's win over the Indians, Lefty Grove becomes the second quickest in M.L. history to win 20 games in a season. In 1912, the Giants Rube Marquard won his 20th that season on July 19th.

1955: Joe DiMaggio is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1956: The Pirates Roberto Clemente hits an inside-the-park grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Reds 9-8. It was his first career home run.

1962: In a 5-2 loss to the Dodgers, the Cardinals Stan Musial breaks Mel Ott's N.L. mark, collecting his 1,862nd RBI.

1966: Ted Williams is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1972: Leo Durocher steps down as Cubs manager and is replaced by Whitey Lockman.

1974: The Braves defeat the Padres in extra innings 1-0 in the first game as manager for Clyde King, who replaced Eddie Mathews.

1977: In the fourth inning of a 9-8 loss to the Cardinals, the Reds Pete Rose collects his 2,881st career hit, breaking the record among switch hitters.

1978: Pete Rose extends his hitting streak to 38 games, breaking the N.L. record.

1990: Between games of a Reds/Padres doubleheader, Roseanne Barr sings an loud, out of tune, screechy version of the Star Spangled Banner. As the crowd booed, she spit on the ground and made a gesture similar to baseball players adjusting their cups. She would be widely criticized for the stunt. President George Bush called it "disgraceful".

1999: Nolan Ryan, George Brett, Robin Yount, and Orlando Cepeda are among the inductees into the Hall of Fame.

2004: Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley are among the inductees into the Hall of Fame.

2010: Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog, umpire Doug Harvey, writer Bill Madden, and broadcaster Jon Miller are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
 
July 26th:

1922: Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm is born in Huntersville, North Carolina.

1928: The Yankees Bob Meusel becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit for the cycle three times in his career.

1933: Joe DiMaggio, playing for the San Francisco Seals of the PCL, sees his 61-game hitting streak end.

1948: Babe Ruth makes his final public appearance at the New York premier of "The Babe Ruth Story".

1948: Current Giants and former Dodgers manager Leo Durocher makes his first appearance at Ebbets Field since leaving Brooklyn. The Dodgers beat their former manager 13-4.

1951: In a 9-1 win over the Cubs, the Dodgers Jim Russell becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in two different games.

1962: In a 6-2 win over the Mets, the Braves Warren Spahn hits his 31st career home run, breaking the N.L. record for pitchers.

1984: In a 5-4 win over the Pirates, the Expos Pete Rose hits his 3,052nd career single, breaking Ty Cobb's record.

1987: In the first inning of a 7-4 win over the A's, the Brewers Paul Molitor singles, then steals second, third, then home. He becomes the first player in A.L. history to steal his way around the bases since the Rangers Dave Nelson in 1974.

1992: In a 6-2 win over the Orioles, the Rangers Nolan Ryan sets a M.L. record with 23 straight seasons of 100 strikeouts.

1998: Don Sutton, Larry Doby, and Lee McPhail are among those inducted into the Hall of Fame. Lee joins his dad Larry McPhail, making them the first father and son to be inducted.

2000: The Phillies trade Curt Schilling to the Diamondbacks for Travis Lee, Omar Daal, Vicente Padilla, and Nelson Figueroa.

2005: The Cubs Greg Maddux becomes the 13th pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

2007: The Phillies Jose Mesa becomes the 11th pitcher in M.L. history to appear in 1,000 games.

2010: The Rays Matt Garza pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Tigers. The Rays joined both the Browns and White Sox from 1917 as the only teams in M.L. history to be involved in three no-hitters in the same season.

2012: The Pirates Starling Marte becomes the 28th player to homer on the first pitch he sees in the Major Leagues. He became the first Pirate since Don Leppert in 1961 to hit a home run in his first M.L. at bat.
 
July 27th:

1905: Hall of Famer Leo Durocher is born in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

1946: The Red Sox Rudy York becomes the third player to hit two grand slams in the same game in a 13-6 win over the Browns. The other two were the Yankees Tony Lazzeri in 1936 and the Red Sox Jim Tabor in 1939.

1963: The Mets lose at Houston 1-0, extending their road losing streak to 21 games.

1978: In a 17-5 win over the Yankees, the Indians Duane Kuiper becomes the third player in modern M.L. history to hit two bases loaded triples in one game.

1988: In a 16-3 win over the Brewers, the Yankees Tommy John becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to commit three errors on the same play.

1998: The Pirates Tony Womack sets a new M.L. record by going 888 straight at bats without grounding into a double play.

1998: The Cubs Sammy Sosa hits his first career grand slam in his 246th career at bat. It marked the most at bats in M.L. history for any player before hitting his first slam.

2011: The Angels Ervin Santana pitches a no-hitter in a 3-1 win over the Indians.

2011: With a 9-2 win over the Yankees, the Mariners break their franchise record 17-game losing streak.
 
July 28th:

1952: The Reds fire manager Luke Sewell and is replaced by Rogers Hornsby.

1963: In a 5-1 loss to the Cubs, the Cardinals Stan Musial strikes out three times. It's the only time he did so in his 22-year career.

1970: In a 6-5 loss to the Yankees, Angels catcher Tom Egan is charged with five passed balls and also committed an error that allowed the winning run to score.

1971: Brooks Robinson, a 16-time Gold Glove winner commits three errors against the A's. However, the Orioles win the game on a walk-off homer by Frank Robinson off Rollie Fingers.

1976: The White Sox John 'Blue Moon' Odom and Francisco Barrios combine on a no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the A's.

1979: In a 6-4 win over the Mets, the Cubs Dave Kingman becomes the sixth player in M.L. history to have two three-homer games in a season.

1983: A.L. President Lee McPhail rules that George Brett's home run against the Yankees in the "Pine Tar" game should count. The rest of the game is played on on August 18th with the Royals winning 5-4.

1985: Lou Brock, Enos Slaughter, Arky Vaughn, and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1991: The Expos Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game in a 2-0 win over the Dodgers. Ron Hassey becomes the first to catch two perfect games. He was Len Barker's catcher during his perfect game for the Indians against the Blue Jays on May 15, 1981.

1993: The Mariners Ken Griffey, Jr. ties the M.L. record by homering in his eighth straight game.

1993: Even giving up a run in relief, the Mets Anthony Young gets the win when New York scores two in the ninth to beat the Marlins 5-4. That victory ended Young's record 27-game losing streak.

1994: The Rangers Kenny Rogers pitches a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Angels.

1995: The Blue Jays trade David Cone to the Yankees in exchange for Marty Janzen and two minor leaguers.

1998: The Cubs Sammy Sosa becomes the 18th player in M.L. history to hit grand slams on consecutive days.

2002: Ozzie Smith is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2004: In a 2-0 win over the Rangers, the Angels Troy Percival becomes the 18th pitcher in M.L. history to record 300 saves.

2007: With two doubleheaders included, MLB sets a new single day attendance record with 717,478 fans watching the day's games.

2011: The Giants acquire Carlos Beltran from the Mets in exchange for minor league pitcher Zach Wheeler.

2013: For the first time in 48 years, the Hall of Fame has a ceremony without a new living inductee.
 
July 29th:

1903: The Red Sox Cy Young pitches a complete game in a 15-14 loss to the New York Highlanders. The Red Sox committed eight errors in the game that lasted two hours and ten minutes.

1911: The Red Sox Joe Wood pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Browns.

1915: In a 8-2 Pirates win over the Dodgers, 41 year old Honus Wagner becomes the oldest player in the century to hit a grand slam. That record stood until 43 year old Tony Perez does it on May 13, 1985.

1933: The Browns defeat the White Sox 3-2 in the first game for new manager Rogers Hornsby.

1958: Ted Williams homers twice, including hitting his 17th career grand slam to help the Red Sox beat the Tigers 11-8.

1967: The Indians trade Rocky Colavito to the White Sox for OF Jim King and a player to be named later.

1968: The Reds George Culver pitches a no-hitter in a 6-1 win over the Phillies.

1969: The A's Vida Blue gets his first M.L. victory in a 6-5 win over the Yankees.

1988: The Orioles trade pitcher Mike Boddicker to the Red Sox for minor leaguers Curt Schilling and Brady Anderson.

1988: In an 8-3 win over the Phillies, the Cubs Rick Sutcliffe becomes the first pitcher since 1984 to steal home.

1989: The A's Rickey Henderson walks four times, scores four times, and steals five bases. Even with all that, the Mariners win 14-6.

1989: The White Sox trade Harold Baines and Fred Manrique to the Rangers for Sammy Sosa, Scott Fletcher, and Wilson Alvarez.

1990: In a 13-3 win over the Tigers, the Red Sox set an A.L. record with 12 doubles.

1996: The Indians trade Carols Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza to the Mets for Jeff Kent and Jose Vizcaino.

1996: Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda announces his retirement as manager and will take over as vice president of the team. Bill Russell is named manager.

2002: The Phillies trade third baseman Scott Rolen to the Cardinals for third baseman Placido Polanco, and pitchers Bud Smith and Mike Timlin.

2003: In a 6-3 win over the Astros, the Braves Marcus Giles goes 5-5 at the plate, giving him nine straight hits. That streak was just one short of the N.L. record.
 
July 30th:

1959: Willie McCovey has four hits, including two triples, in his M.L. debut for the Giants.

1966: With a 6-3 win over the Cubs, the Mets finish July with an 18-14 record, the first winning month in the team's fifth season.

1968: In a 10-1 loss to the Indians, Senators shortstop Ron Hansen becomes the eighth player in M.L. history, first since 1927, to pull off an unassisted triple play. Up until that time, all unassisted triple plays had involved the Indians.

1973: The Rangers Jim Bibby pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the A's. He becomes the 14th rookie in M.L. history to do so.

1980: During a workout at the Astrodome, Astros pitcher J.R. Richard, who had been complaining about a dead feeling in his arm, suffers a stroke while throwing to first. It was his first workout since being hospitalized for tests. Surgery is performed to remove a blood clot behind his right collarbone. Richard would never pitch again.

1982: To make more seats at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the first place Braves remove the tee-pee of mascot Chief Noc-A-Homa. The Braves would then blow a 10.5 game lead and lose 19 of 21 games. After pressure from the fans, the Braves would put the tee-pee back up. The Braves would eventually win the division.

1996: In a trade of starting pitchers, the Giants send Mark Leiter to the Expos for Kirk Rueter.

2004: The Mets make two separate trade with the Pirates and Devil Rays. They acquire pitcher Kris Benson and infielder Jeff Keppinger from the Pirates in exchange for Ty Wigginton, Matt Peterson and Jose Bautista. Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato are acquired from the Devil Rays for prospects Scott Kazmir and Jose Diaz.

2004: The Marlins trade Brad Penny, Hee Seop Choi, and minor leaguer Bill Murphy to the Dodgers for Paul Lo Duca, Guillermo Mota, and Juan Encarnacion.

2007: Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2008: The Yankees acquire Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers in exchange for Kyle Farnsworth.

2013: In a three team trade, the Red Sox acquire pitcher Jake Peavy, the Tigers acquire Jose Iglesias with Avisail Garcia going to the White Sox.
 
July 31st:

1897: Pitcher John Grimes of the St. Louis Brown Stockings sets a M.L. record by hitting six batters in a game.

1912: In a 4-1 win over the Senators, the Tigers Ty Cobb goes 1-4 and sets a M.L. record for hits in a month with 68.

1932: In a 1-0 loss to the A's, the Indians sets an attendance record with 80,184 fans at Lakefront Stadium (later known as Municipal Stadium).

1954: In a 15-7 win over the Dodgers, the Braves Joe Adcock homers four times, doubles, and sets a M.L. record with 18 total bases.

1972: In an 8-1 win over the Twins, the White Sox Dick Allen becomes the seventh player in M.L history, first since 1939, to hit two inside-the-park home runs in one game.

1981: The owners and players agree to a pooling system for compensation of free agents, ending the 50 day old players strike.

1983: Brooks Robinson, Juan Marichal, George Kell, and Walter Alston are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1989: The Twins trade Frank Viola, the last season's A.L. Cy Young Award winner, to the Mets for Rick Aguilera, Tim Drummond, Kevin Tapani, Jack Savage, and David West.

1990: Nolan Ryan wins his 300th game, defeating the Brewers 11-3.

1995: The Mets trade Bret Saberhagen and minor league pitcher (PTBNL) to the Rockies for Juan Acevedo and Arnold Gooch.

1996: The Tigers trade Cecil Fielder to the Yankees for Ruben Sierra and prospect Matt Drews. It's the first trade in M.L. history involving two players with 220 homers to be traded for each other.

1997: The Red Sox acquire Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe from the Mariners in exchange for Heathcliff Slocumb.

1997: The A's trade Mark McGwire to the Cardinals for pitchers Eric Ludwick, T.J. Mathews, and Blake Stein.

1998: The Mariners trade Randy Johnson to the Astros for John Halama, Freddy Garcia, and Carlos Guillen.

2003: The Braves John Smoltz becomes the fastest player in M.L. history to record 40 saves in a season.

2004: The Diamondbacks trade Steve Finely and Brent Mayne to the Dodgers for three minor leaguers.

2006: The Dodgers acquire Greg Maddux for Cesar Izturis.

2007: The Braves acquire Mark Teixeira from the Rangers in a trade that most Braves fans don't want to speak about. (Note: Personal commentary).

2008: The Reds trade Ken Griffey, Jr. to the White Sox for Nick Masset and minor leaguer Danny Richar.

2008: In a three team deal, the Dodgers acquire Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox Jason Bay goes to the Red Sox, with the Pirates getting Brandon Moss, Craig Hansen, Bryan Morris, and Andy LaRoche.

2009: The Padres trade Jake Peavy to the White Sox for Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter, and Adam Russell.

2011: The Braves send four minor league players to the Astros for Michael Bourn.
