July 20th:

1906: Mal Eason of the Brooklyn Superbas pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Cardinals.

1944: The Browns Nels Potter becomes the first pitcher to be suspended for throwing a spitball. He is suspended for ten days.

1958: The Tigers Jim Bunning pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Red Sox.

1969: Play is stopped in the third inning of the Cubs/Phillies game in Philadelphia with the teams moving to their baselines and looking at the sky when word comes from the P.A. announcer that the astronauts have landed on the moon. The game resumes after a recording of Kate Smith's "God Bless America" and a prayer over the loudspeaker for the astronauts.

1970: The Dodgers Bill Singer pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Phillies.

1976: In a 6-2 Brewers win over the Angels, Hank Aaron hits the last of his 755 career home runs.

1987: In a 7-1 win over the Twins, the Yankees Don Mattingly ties the M.L. record with 22 putouts.

2006: The Indians trade relief pitcher Bob Wickman to the Braves for minor league catcher Max Ramirez.
 
July 21st:

1892: In a matchup of 300 game winners, the Phillies Tim Keefe beats Jim Galvin and the Browns 2-0.

1921: In the Indians 17-8 win, the two teams combine to set an A.L. record with a combined 16 doubles.

1947: Mickey Cocharne, Carl Hubbell, Lefty Grove, and Frankie Frisch are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Frisch becomes the first switch-hitter to be inducted.

1956: In a 13-6 loss to the Cubs, the Dodgers Junior Gilliam sets a M.L. record with 12 assists at second base and Pee Wee Reese collects his 2,000th hit.

1963: Dodgers manager Walter Alston is ejected from both games of a doubleheader against the Braves, who swept the twin bill over Los Angeles.

1975: Against the Astros, the Mets Joe Torre becomes the first player in N.L history to ground into four straight double plays in one game.

1982: The Reds fire manager John McNamara and replace him with Russ Nixon.

1988: Jim Rice is suspended three game by the Red Sox for shoving manager Joe Morgan. Rice was upset when Morgan called on infielder Spike Owen to pinch-hit for him.

1988: The Yankees trade Jay Buhner, minor leaguer Rich Balabon, and a player to be named later to the Mariners for Ken Phelps. The trade was immortalized in the TV series "Seinfeld" by George Constanza's dad Frank, saying "How could you have traded Buhner for Ken Phelps?".

2005: The Yankees Hideki Matsui plays in his 395th straight game, setting a new A.L. record to start a career.

2008: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 2,000 strikeouts for two different teams. He also did it with the Mariners from 1989-1998.
 
July 22nd:

1905: The A's Weldon Henley pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Browns.

1923: Walter Johnson becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

1954: In a game against the White Sox, Yankees manager Casey Stengel moves Mickey Mantle from shortstop to center field. Mantle would hit a walk-off homer in the tenth to give the Yankees a 4-3 win.

1962: During a doubleheader in which they are swept by the Reds, the Mets have four runners thrown out a home plate.

1973: A broken ankle ends the season of the Reds Dave Concepcion.

2000: An electrical problem causes the retractable roof to not close during the Rangers/Mariners game at Safeco Field, resulting in a 54-minute rain delay.

2002: A report from the Los Angeles Times states the Players Association had set a September 16th strike date.

2007: Tulsa Drillers first base coach Mike Coolbaugh is struck and killed by a line drive. He is the second on-field fatality in professional baseball history.

2012: Barry Larkin is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ron Santo, who passed away in 2010, is posthumously inducted as well.

2013: The Rangers acquire Matt Garza from the Cubs in exchange for prospects Mike Olt, C.J. Edwards, and Justin Grimm.
 
July 23rd:

1918: Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese is born in Ekron, Kentucky.

1925: In an 11-7 Yankees win over the Senators, Lou Gehrig hits the first of his 23 career grand slams.

1936: Hall of Famer Don Drysdale is born in Van Nuys, California.

1962: Jackie Robinson and Bob Feller are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1976: Japanese star Sadaharu Oh joins Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron as the only players in professional baseball history to hit 700 home runs.

2000: The Reds Mike Bell makes his debut, becoming part of the first three-generation family to play in the majors for the same team. His grandfather Gus played for the Reds from 1953-1961 with his father in 1987 and 1988.

2000: In the second inning against the Astros, the Cardinals Andy Benes ties a M.L. record by allowing four home runs in a single inning.

2000: After rejecting a trade to the Mets, Barry Larkin agrees to a new three year deal with the Reds.

2009: The White Sox Mark Buehrle pitches a perfect game in a 5-0 win over the Rays.
 
July 24th:

1933: The Cardinals fire manager Gabby Street. Second baseman Frankie Frisch is named player/manager.

1948: The White Sox Pat Seerey becomes the first player in M.L. history to strike out seven times in a doubleheader.

1956: Hank Greenberg and Joe Cronin are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1965: A 5-1 Mets loss to the Phillies turns out to be the final game for manager Casey Stengel. The 75-year old Stengel falls as he leaves an after midnight party, breaking his hip, forcing his unexpected retirement.

1968: In a 3-2 loss to the A's, the White Sox Hoty Wilhelm makes his 907th career pitching appearance, breaking Cy Young's record.

1978: Billy Martin resigns as Yankees manager. Bob Lemon takes over for Martin.

1979: The Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski hits his 400th home run.

1983: George Brett's ninth inning home run to put the Royals ahead of the Yankees in the ninth inning is disallowed when the umpires rule he had too much pine tar on his bat. Brett, in a rage, charged out of the dugout and had to be separated from the umpires. A.L. President Lee McPhail overruled the decision. The game resumes on August 18th, which the Royals won 4-3.

1993: A 5-4 defeat to the Dodgers extends the losing streak of Mets pitcher Anthony Young to 27 games.

2004: After being hit by a Bronson Arroyo pitch, the Yankees Alex Rodriguez stares out at the Red Sox pitcher. Boston catcher Jason Varitek exchanges words with Rodriguez, then puts his glove in his face, starting a bench-clearing brawl between the two rivals.

2007: The Astros Craig Biggio announces he will retire after the season.

2011: Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven, and former GM Pat Gillick are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
 
July 25th:

1890: In his final minor league appearance, Cy Young strikes out 18 in a no-hitter for Tri-State against McKeesport from Pennsylvania.

1908: Against another future Hall of Famer in Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner goes 5-5 in the Pirates 7-2 win over the Giants.

1941: The Red Sox Lefty Grove wins his 300th game.

1955: Joe DiMaggio is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1962: In a 5-2 Cardinals loss to the Dodgers, Stan Musial hits a two run homer that gives him 1,862 RBIs, breaking Mel Ott's N.L. record.

1966: Ted Williams is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1972: Leo Durocher resigns as Cubs managers and is replaced by Whitey Lockman.

1977: Pete Rose collects his 2,881st career hit, making him the leader among switch-hitters.

1978: Pete Rose breaks the N.L. record by extending his hitting streak to 38 games.

1990: Between games of the Reds/Padres doubleheader in San Diego, actress Roseanne Barr sings an out of tune, screechy version of The Star Spangled Banner. As the crowd booed after her singing, Barr would spit on the ground and grab her crotch as if she was adjusting a protective cup. Barr and the Padres received widespread criticism afterward. President George H.W. Bush called Barr's performance "disgraceful".

1999: Three players who were on the ballot for the first time this year are inducted into the Hall of Fame: Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount. Also enshrined are Veterans Committee inductees Orlando Cepeda, Nestor Chylak, Frank Selee, and "Smokey" Joe Williams.

2004: Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2010: The Angels acquire pitcher Dan Haren from the Diamondbacks for pitchers Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez, and a player to be named later.

2010: Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog, umpire Doug Harvey, broadcaster Jon Miller, and writer Bill Madden are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2012: The Phillies and pitcher Cole Hamels agree to a six year deal worth $144 million.
 
July 26th:

1922: Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm is born in Huntersville, North Carolina.

1928: The Yankees Bob Meusel becomes the first player in M.L. to hit for the cycle three times.

1933: Joe DiMaggio, playing for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, has his 61-game hitting streak come to an end.

1948: Babe Ruth appears at the at the New York premier of The Babe Ruth Story. It would be his final public appearance.

1948: Leo Durocher makes his first appearance at Ebbets Field since leaving the Dodgers to take over as Giants manager. The Giants lose 13-4.

1962: In a 6-1 win over the Mets., the Braves Warren Spahn hits his 31st home run, setting the N.L. record for pitchers.

1984: In a 5-4 Reds win over the Pirates, Pete Rose singles for the 3,052nd time, breaking Ty Cobb's record.

1992: In a 6-2 Rangers win over the Orioles, Nolan Ryan sets a M.L. record by striking out 100 batters for 23 straight seasons. It was also his 319th win of his career, passing Phil Niekro for 12th on the all time list.

1993: The Padres trade pitchers Bruce Hurst and Greg Harris to the Rockies for catcher Brad Ausmus, and pitchers Doug Bochtler and Andy Ashby.

1998: Don Sutton, Larry Doby, George Davis, and Joe Rogan are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Also enshrined is Lee McPhail, who joins Larry as the only father and son to be inducted.

1998: Jose Canseco hits his 380th home run, passing Orlando Cepeda and Tony Perez as the all-time leader among Latin Players.

2000: The Phillies trade Curt Schilling to the Diamondbacks for Travis Lee, Omar Daal, Vicente Padilla, and Nelson Figueroa.

2005: Greg Maddux records his 3,000th strikeout.

2011: In the bottom of the 19th inning against the Pirates, Braves relief pitcher Scott Proctor hits a slow infield grounder which is fielded and thrown to home plate. Pirates catcher Michael McKenry clearly tagged Julio Lugo out at the plate, but umpire Jerry Meals ruled he missed the tag and called him safe. Replays clearly showed the tag was made and the Pirates angrily argued the call. The missed call gave the Braves a 4-3 win, ending a game that took six hours and 39 minutes to play.

2013: The Cubs trade Alfonso Soriano and cash to the Yankees for minor league pitcher Corey Black.
 
July 27th:

1905: Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher is born in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

1938: For the first of a record 11 times, Hank Greenberg hits two home runs in consecutive days.

1943: Phillies owner William D. Cox fires manager Bucky Harris without informing him or the players, replacing him with Freddie Fritzsimmons. The players threaten to strike, but continue to play after being urged to do so by Harris.

1946: The Red Sox Rudy York becomes the third player in M.L. history to hit two grand slams in the same game during a 13-6 win over the Browns. The others to do so was the Yankees Tony Lazzeri in 1936 and the Red Sox Jim Tabor in 1939.

1988: During a 16-3 Yankees win over the Brewers, Tommy John becomes the first pitcher to commit three errors on the same play. He bobbled a grounder hit by Jeffery Leonard, then throws the ball down the right field line, and finally after cutting off the throw from Dave Winfield, he threw it wildly to the plate, allowing two runs to score.

1998: The Pirates Tony Womack sets a new M.L. record with 888 consecutive at bats without hitting into a double play.

2000: The Blue Jays Jim Fregosi records his 1,000th win as a manager.

2011: The Cardinals trade outfielder Colby Rasmus, and relievers Trever Miller and Brian Tallet to the Blue Jays for starter Edwin Jackson, and relievers Octavio Dotel and Marc Rzepcynski.

2011: The Angels Ervin Santana pitches a no-hitter in a 3-1 win over the Indians.

2014: In front of 50,000 fans at Cooperstown, Braves pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, White Sox slugger Frank Thomas, and managers Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, and Tony La Russa are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
 
July 28th:

1890: The Giants Mickey Welch wins his 300th game.

1952: The Reds fire manager Luke Sewell and replace him with Rogers Hornsby.

1963: In a 5-1 Cardinals loss to the Cubs, Stan Musial strikes out three times. In his career that spanned 3,026 games, it was the only time Musial struck out three times.

1970: In a 6-5 loss to the Yankees, Angels catcher Tom Egan is charged with five passed balls and commits an error that allows the winning run to score.

1976: White Sox pitchers John "Blue Moon" Odom and Francisco Barrios combine to no-hit the A's in a 2-1 win. Odom pitched the first five innings and Barrios the last four.

1983: A.L. President Lee McPhail George Brett's "pine tar" home run should count. The remainder of the game against the Yankees is played on August 18th with the Royals winning the game.

1985: Lou Brock, Enos Slaughter, Arky Vaughn, and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1991: The Expos Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game in a 2-0 win over the Dodgers. Ron Hassey becomes the first to catch two perfect games. He was behind the plate for Len Barker's perfect game in 1981.

1993: Ken Griffey, Jr. homers in his eighth straight game, tying the M.L. record.

1993: The Mets Anthony Young gives up the go ahead run in the 9th, but his team scores twice in the bottom half in a 5-4 walk-off win over the Marlins. The win breaks Young's 27-game losing streak.

1994: The Rangers Kenny Rogers pitches a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Angels.

1995: The Yankees acquire Ruben Sierra and Jason Beverlin from the A's for Danny Tartabull. The Yankees also acquire David Cone from the Blue Jays for Marty Janzen and minor leaguers Jason Jarvis and Mike Gordon.

2000: The Mets acquire Mike Bordick from the Orioles for Melvin Mora, Mike Kinkade, and two minor league pitchers. They also acquire reliever Rick White and outfielder Bubba Trammel from the Devil Rays for minor leaguers Jason Tyner and Paul Wilson.

2002: Ozzie Smith is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2004: The Angels Troy Percival records his 300th save.

2007: Major League Baseball sets a new attendance record as 717,478 fans attend games that day and night.

2011: The Mets trade Carlos Beltran and cash to the Giants for top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.
 
July 29th:

1911: The Red Sox "Smokey" Joe Wood pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Browns.

1968: The Reds Joe Culver pitches a no-hitter in a 6-1 win over the Phillies.

1986: With the Tigers 9-5 win over the Brewers, Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager to win 600 games in both leagues.

1988: The Orioles trade Mike Boddicker to the Red Sox for Curt Schilling and Brady Anderson.

1989: The White Sox trade Harold Baines and Fred Manrique to the Rangers for Sammy Sosa, Scott Fletcher, and Wilson Alvarez.

1996: After a heart attack last month, Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda announces his retirement due to his health.

1996: The Mets trade Jeff Kent and Jose Vizcaino to the Indians for Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza.

1996: Chris Sabo is ejected for using a doctored bat after it broke during a 2-1 loss to the Astros. Sabo would be suspended seven games and fined.

2000: The White Sox trade Brook Fordyce and three minor leaguers to the Orioles for Charles Johnson and Harold Baines.

2002: The Phillies trade Scott Rolen and minor league pitcher Doug Nickle to the Cardinals for Placido Polanco, Bud Smith, and Mike Timlin.

2006: In the Mets 11-4 win over the Braves, 47-year old Julio Franco becomes the oldest pinch-runner in M.L. history.

2008: Ichiro Suzuki records his 3,000th professional hit. He collected the first 1,278 hits for the Orix Blue Wave in Japan's Pacific League.

2008: The Braves trade first baseman Mark Teixeira to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek.

2009: The Phillies acquire Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco from the Indians for Carlos Carrasco, Jason Knapp, Jason Donald, and Lou Marson.

2010: The Astros trade Roy Oswalt to the Phillies for J.A. Happ, Anthony Gose, and Jonathan Villar.

2010: The Orioles name Buck Showalter manager.

2010: The Nationals trade Matt Capps to the Twins for prosepcts Wilson Ramos and Joe Testa.

2011: The Astros trade Hunter Pence to the Phillies for three minor league prospects.

2013: In a 3-2 Indians win over the White Sox, 42-year old Jason Giambi becomes the oldest player in M.L. history to hit a walk-off home run.
 
July 30th:

1930: In the first night game played by a M.L. team, the Reds lose an exhibition to the Indianapolis Indians 17-5. Big floodlights are used to light up Washington Street Park. The lighting made it difficult for the players to judge distances when fielding balls in play.

1959: The Giants Willie McCovey collects four hits in his M.L. debut.

1973: The Rangers Jim Bibby pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the A's.

1980: During a workout at the Astrodome, Astros pitcher J.R. Richard suffers a stroke. Emergency is performed to remove a blood clot behind his right collarbone. Richard would recover, but never play again.

1982: With the team in first place, the Braves remove the tee-pee belonging to mascot Chief Noc-A-Homa to put in more seats. The Braves then lose 19 of 21 games, blowing a 10.5 game lead in the division. That puts pressure on the front office from the fans to put it back. The tee-pee returns and the Braves go on to win the N.L. West.

1990: Yankees owner George Steinbrenner agrees to go on the permanent ineligible list, basically amounting to a lifetime ban.

1996: The Giants trade Mark Leiter to the Expos for Kirk Rueter.

2004: The Mets acquire Kris Benson and Jeff Keppinger from the Pirates for Ty Wiggington, Matt Peterson, and Jose Bautista. They also acquire Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato from the Devil Rays for Scott Kazmir and Jose Diaz.

2006: The Yankees acquire Bobby Abreu and Corey Lidle from the Phillies for four prospects.

2007: Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2011: The Indians trade Orlando Cabrera to the Giants for minor leaguer Thomas Neil.

2011: The Pirates acquire Derrick Lee from the Orioles for minor leager Aaron Baker.

2011: The Rockies trade Ubaldo Jimenez to the Indians for four minor league prospects.

2013: In a three team trade, the Red Sox acquire Jake Peavy from the White Sox, the Tigers acquire Jose Iglesias while the White Sox get Avasail Garcia from the Tigers.

2014: The Mariners Felix Hernandez becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to make 14 straight starts of at least seven innings and two runs or less given up.
 
July 31st:

1897: John Grimes of the St. Louis Brown Stockings sets a M.L. record for a nine inning game with six hit batsmen.

1932: In front of 80,184 fans, the Indians lose their first at Lakefront Stadium to the A's 1-0. The ballpark became known as Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1947.

1954: In the Braves 15-7 win over the Dodgers, Joe Adcock hits four home runs and sets a M.L. record with 18 total bases.

1965: The Orioles release Robin Roberts after going 5-7 for the season.

1981: The 50-day old strike ends when the owners and players agree to a pooling system for the compensation of free agents.

1983: Brooks Robinson, Juan Marichal, George Kell, and Walter Alston are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1989: Last season's A.L. Cy Young Award winner, Frank Viola, is traded by the Twins to the Mets for Rick Aguilera, Tim Drummond, Kevin Tapani, Jack Savage, and David West. The Mets also traded Mookie Wilson to the Blue Jays for Jeff Musselman and minor league prospect Mike Brady.

1990: Nolan Ryan records his 300th win.

1995: The Mets trade Bret Saberhagen and a player to be named (Dave Swanson) to the Rockies for pitchers Juan Acevedo and Arnold Gooch.

1996: The Tigers trade Cecil Fielder to the Yankees for Ruben Sierra and minor leaguer Matt Drews.

1997: The Mariners trade Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek to the Red Sox for Heathcliff Slocumb.

1997: The A's trade Mark McGwire to the Cardinals for Eric Ludwick, T.J. Mathews, and Blake Stein.

2001: The Red Sox acquire reliever Ugueth Urbina from the Expos for minor leaguers Tomo Ohka and Rich Rundles.

2003: The Orioles trade Sidney Ponson to the Giants for Kurt Ainsworth, Damian Moss, and Ryan Hannaman.

2003: In the Braves 7-4 win over the Astros, John Smoltz becomes the fastest in M.L. history to record 40 saves in a season.

2004: The long anticipated trade of Nomar Garciaparra is finally accomplished when the Red Sox shortstop is traded to the Cubs as part of a four-team deal which includes the Twins and Expos. Boston acquires shortstop Orlando Cabrera (Expos) and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz (Twins) with Nomar, prospect Matt Murton and cash to Chicago, which had shipped minor league southpaw Justin Jones to the Minnesota for Mientkiewicz, who in turn is sent along with Cubs' shortstop Alex Gonzalez, relief pitcher Francis Beltran and minor leaguer Brendan Harris to Beantown, which sends the trio of Gonzalez, Beltran and Harris to the Expos for Cabrera. 2004: The Diamondbacks trade Steve Finley and Brent Mayne to the Dodgers for Koyie Hill, Reggie Abercrombie, and Bill Murphy.

2005: Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2006: The Cubs trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for Cesar Izurtis.

2007: The Rangers trade Mark Teixeira and Ron Mahay to the Braves for Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Matt Harrison, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, and Beau Jones.

2008: The Reds trade Ken Griffey, Jr. to the White Sox for Nick Masset and Danny Richar.

2008: In a three team deal, the Dodgers acquire Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox acquire Jason Bay, Andy LaRoche, and Bryan Morris, and the Pirates acquire Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen.

2009: The Padres trade Jake Peavy to the White Sox for pitching prospects Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter, and Adam Russell.

2011: The Braves acquire Michael Bourn from the Astros.

2011: The Braves join the Phillies as the only teams in the majors with 10,000 wins.
