July 21st:

1921: In the Indians 17-8 win over the Yankees, the two team combine for an A.L. record 16 doubles.

1947: Carl Hubbell, Frankie Frisch, Mickey Cochrane, and Lefty Grove are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1967: Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx dies at age 59.

1975: The Mets Joe Torre becomes the first player in N.L. history to hit four straight double plays in one game.

1982: The Reds fire manager John McNamara and is replaced by third base coach Russ Nixon.

1988: The Red Sox suspend Jim Rice for three days after he shoves manager Joe Morgan.

1988: The Mariners trade Ken Phelps to the Yankees for Jay Buhner, prospect Rich Balabon and a player to be named later (Troy Evers). The trade would be immortalized in the TV show "Seinfeld", when George Costanza's dad Frank asks "How could you trade Buhner for Ken Phelps?".

2005: Hideki Matsui plays in his 395th game to start his career, breaking Al Simmons' A.L. record.

2008: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the first pitcher to record 2,000 strikeouts for two different teams. He also did so for the Mariners from 1989-1998.
 
July 22nd:

1905: The A's Weldon Henley pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Browns.

1923: Walter Johnson becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

1962: While being swept in a doubleheader against the Reds, the Mets have four baserunners thrown out at home trying to score.

1969: The All-Star Game, for the first time, is postponed due to weather. It will be played the next day at Washington's RFK Stadium.

2007: Mike Coolbaugh, first base coach of the Tulsa Drillers, is killed when he is struck in the head by a line drive. It is the second on-field fatality in baseball history.

2012: Barry Larkin is inducted into the Hall of Fame. The late Ron Santo is also inducted.

2012: The Angels Mike Trout sets an A.L. rookie record by hitting in his 14th straight game.

2013: The Rangers acquire Matt Garza from the Cubs for prospects Mike Olt, Justin Grimm, and C.J. Edwards.
 
July 23rd:

1918: Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese is born in Ekron, Kentucky.

1925: In the Yankees 11-7 win over the Senators, Lou Gehrig hits the first of his 23 career grand slams.

1936: Hall of Famer Don Drysdale is born in Van Nuys, California.

1962: Jackie Robinson and Bob Feller are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1969: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 9-3 at Washington's RFK Stadium.

1976: Japanese star Sadaharu Oh hits his 700th career home run.

2000: With Mike's debut with the team, the Bells become the first three generation family to play for the same team in M.L. history. Mike's grandfather Gus played for the Reds from 1953-1961 and his father Buddy from 1987-1988.

2000: Barry Larkin rejects a trade to the Mets and signs a new three year deal with the Reds worth $27 million.

2000: Three different Reds, first baseman Tony Perez, manager Sparky Anderson, and announcer Marty Brennman are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Carlton Fisk is also enshrined.

2009: The White Sox Mark Buehrle pitches the 18th perfect game in M.L. history in a 5-0 win over the Rays. The perfect game is preserved by outfielder DeWayne Wise, who reached over the wall to rob a potential home run from Gabe Kapler to lead off the ninth.
 
July 24th:

1933: Gabby Street, who led the team to N.L. pennants in 1930 and 1931, is fired by the fifth place Cardinals as manager. Second baseman Frankie Frisch is named player/manager.

1948: Five members of Duluth's Northern League team are killed in a bus crash. The accident also injures 19 others.

1956: Hank Greenberg and Joe Cronin are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1965: The Mets lose to the Phillies 5-1 in what would become, unknown to anyone, the final game Casey Stengel manages. Leaving a midnight party, Stengel falls and breaks his hip, forcing his sudden retirement.

1968: The White Sox Hoyt Wilhelm makes his 907th career pitching appearance, breaking Cy Young's record.

1978: Billy Martin resigns as Yankees manager. He is replaced by Bob Lemon.

1979: Carl Yastrzemski records his 400th home run.

1983: George Brett hits what appears to be a go ahead home run in the ninth inning to give the Royals a lead over the Yankees. The umpires look at the bat and rule he has too much pine tar on his bat and his called out. In a rage, Brett runs out of the dugout towards the umpires. A.L. President Lee MacPhail overrules the decision, and the game is completed on August 18th, with the Royals winning 4-3.

1993: A 5-4 Mets defeat to the Dodgers marks the 27th straight loss for Anthony Young.

1995: The Red Sox trade Mark Whiten to the Phillies for Dave Hollins.

2007: The Astros Craig Biggio announces he will retire at season's end.

2009: The A's trade Matt Holliday to the Cardinals for three prospects.

2011: Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven, and former GM Pat Gillick are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
 
July 25th:

1890: Cy Young makes his final minor league appearance, pitching a no-hitter for Tri-State while striking out 18 McKeesport hitters.

1908: Honus Wagner goes 5-5 against Christy Mathewson in the Pirates 7-2 win over the Giants.

1941: In the Red Sox 10-6 victory over the Indians, Lefty Grove records his 300th win.

1955: Joe DiMaggio is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1956: Roberto Clemente becomes the only player in M.L. history to hit a walk-off inside the park grand slam, lifting the Pirates to a 9-8 win over the Cubs.

1962: Stan Musial records his 1,862nd RBI, passing Mel Ott as the N.L.'s all time leader.

1966: Ted Williams is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1977: Pete Rose records his 2,881st career hit, making him the all time leader among switch hitters.

1978: Pete Rose extends his hitting streak to 38 games, breaking Tommy Holmes' N.L. record.

1990: Between games of a doubleheader in San Diego for the Padres against the Reds, TV star Roseanne Barr is asked to sing the national anthem. She produces an irreverent version of the anthem in a screechy and off tune way. Afterwards, she spits on the ground then gestures like she was grabbing at her crotch like she was adjusting an athletic cup. She and the Padres receive widespread criticism for the stunt. President George H. W. Bush called her performance a disgrace.

1999: Nolan Ryan, Robin Yount, and George Brett, all voted in their first year of eligibility, are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Joining them are Orlando Cepeda, Nerstor Chylak, Frank Selee, and 'Smokey' Joe Williams.

2004: Paul Moiltor and Dennis Eckersley are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2010: The Diamondbacks trade Dan Haren to the Angels for Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, and Rafael Rodriguez.

2010: Andre Dawson, manager Whitey Herzog, umpire Doug Harvey, broadcaster Jon Miller, and writer Bill Madden are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2012: The Phillies sign pitcher Cole Hamels to a six year deal worth $144 million.
 
July 26th:

1922: Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm is born in Huntersville, North Carolina.

1933: Playing for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, Joe DiMaggio's 61 game hitting streak comes to an end.

1948: At the New York premier of "The Babe Ruth Story", Babe Ruth makes his final public appearance.

1962: In the Braves 6-1 win over the Mets, Warren Spahn hits his 31st career home, a new N.L. record for pitchers.

1984: In the Expos 5-4 win over the Pirates, Pete Rose records his 3,052nd career single, tying Ty Cobb's record.

1992: Nolan Ryan records 100 strikeouts for the 23rd straight season, setting a new M.L. record.

1993: The Padres trade pitchers Bruce Hurst and Greg Harris to the Rockies for catcher Brad Ausmus along with pitchers Doug Bochtler and Andy Ashby.

1998: Don Sutton, Larry Doby, Lee MacPhail, George Davis, and Joe Rogan are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1998: Jose Canseco hits his 380th career home run, making him the all time leader among Latin players.

2000: The Phillies trade Curt Schilling to the Diamondbacks for Travis Lee, Omar Daal, Vicente Padilla, and Nelson Figueroa.

2005: Greg Maddux records his 3,000th strikeout.

2010: The Rays Matt Garza pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Tigers.

2011: In the bottom of the 19th inning and after six hours and 39 minutes, the Pirates are victims of one of the worst calls in recent baseball history against the Braves. Home plate umpire Jerry Meals rules catcher Michael McKenry had missed the tag on Julio Lugo, even though replays clearly showed the tag was applied well before Lugo got to home plate The call costs the Pirates a 4-3 loss to the Braves.

2013: The Cubs trade Alfonso Soriano and cash to the Yankees for minor leaguer Corey Black.
 
July 27th:

1905: Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher is born in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

1919: Joe Wilhoit of the Western League's Wichita Jobbers extends his hitting streak to 50 games, breaking the record for the longest in professional baseball history. The record streak would eventually reach 69 games.

1943: The Phillies fire manager Bucky Harris without informing him of the decision. He is replaced by Freddie Fitzsimmons.

1964: Luke Appling and Miller Huggins are among those inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1984: Pete Rose hits his 3,053rd single, breaking Ty Cobb's M.L. record.

1998: The Pirates Tony Womack sets a new M.L. record by not hitting into a double play in 888 consecutive at bats.

2011: The Cardinals trade Colby Rasmus, Trever Miller, and Brian Tallet to the Blue Jays for Edwin Jackson, Octavio Dotel, and Marc Rzepczynski.

2011: The Angels Ervin Santana pitches a no-hitter in a 3-1 win over the Indians.

2014: Two former Braves pitchers, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, along with their manager in Atlanta Bobby Cox, are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Also inducted are slugger Frank Thomas and managers Joe Torre and Tony La Russa. More than 50,000 fans attended the Cooperstown ceremony.
 
July 28th:

1890: The Giants Mickey Welch wins his 300th game.

1952: The Reds fire manager Luke Sewell and is replaced by Rogers Hornsby.

1963: For the only time in his career that spanned 22 years and 3,026 games, Stan Musial strikes out three times in a game during the Cardinals 5-1 loss to the Cubs.

1970: During the Angels 6-5 loss to the Yankees, catcher Tom Egan is charged with five passed ball and commits an error that leads to the winning run.

1971: Brooks Robinson, a 16-time Gold Glove winner, commits three errors in a game against the A's. A Frank Robinson walk off three run homer off Rollie Fingers helps the Orioles still win the game 3-2.

1976: The White John "Blue Moon" Odom and Francisco Barrios combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the A's. It marked the last of Odom's 84 wins in the majors.

1983: A.L. President Lee MacPhial decides George Brett's home run that was disallowed due to pine tar against the Yankees should count.

1985: Lou Brock, Enos Slaughter, Arky Vaughn, and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1991: The Expos Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game in a 2-0 win over the Dodgers.

1993: Ken Griffey, Jr. ties a M.L. record by homering in his eighth straight game.

1993: Despite giving up the go ahead run in relief, Anthony Young gets the win, ending his 27-game losing streak when the Mets score twice in the ninth for a 5-4 walk-off win over the Marlins.

1994: Kenny Rogers pitches a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Angels for the Rangers.

1995: The Yankees trade Danny Tartabull to the A's for Ruben Sierra and Jason Beverlin.

1995: The Blue Jays trade David Cone to the Yankees for Marty Janzen and two minor leaguers.

2000: The Mets acquire Mike Bordick from the Orioles for Melvin Mora, Mike Kinkade and two minor league pitchers. The Mets also acquire Rick White and Bubba Trammel from the Devil Rays for minor leaguers Jason Tyner and Paul Wilson.

2002: Ozzie Smith is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2002: The White Sox trade Kenny Lofton to the Giants for two minor league pitchers.

2007: In 17 games, including two day-night doubleheaders, MLB sets a new single day attendance record with 717,478 fans attending ballgames.

2011: The Mets trade Carlos Beltran and cash to the Giants for pitching prospect Zach Wheeler.
 
July 29th:

1911: The Red Sox Joe Wood pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Browns.

1968: The Reds Joe Culver pitches a no-hitter in a 6-1 win over the Phillies.

1986: With the Tigers 9-5 win over the Brewers, Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager in M.L. history to win 600 games in both leagues.

1988: The Orioles trade pitcher Mike Boddicker to the Red Sox for Curt Schilling and Brady Anderson.

1989: The White Sox trade Harold Baines and Fred Manrique to the Rangers for Sammy Sosa and Wilson Alvarez.

1996: After suffering a mild heart attack last month, Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda announces his retirement due to his health.

1996: The Mets trade Jeff Kent and Jose Vizcaino to the Indians for Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza.

1996: In the second inning of the Reds 2-1 loss to the Astros, Chris Sabo breaks his bat. The broken bat reveals it was doctored by being hollowed out and filled with rubber balls. Sabo was immediately ejected and would later be suspended seven games.

2000: The White Sox trade catcher Brook Fordyce and three minor leaguers to the Orioles for Charles Johnson and Harold Baines.

2002: The White Sox trade Sandy Alomar, Jr. to the Rockies for a minor league pitcher.

2002: The Phillies trade Scott Rolen and minor league pitcher Doug Nickle to the Cardinals for Bud Smith, Placido Polanco, and Mike Timlin.

2008: Ichrio Suzuki records his 3,000th professional hit. He had 1,278 hits with the Orix Blue Waves in Japan. His first inning single off the Rangers Luis Mendoza was his 1,722nd in the majors.

2008: The Braves trade Mark Teixeira to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek.

2009: The Indians trade Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco to the Phillies for four minor leaguers.

2010: After his approval, the Astros trade Roy Oswalt to the Phillies for J.A. Happ, Anthony Gose, and Jonathan Villar.

2010: The Orioles name Buck Showalter manager.

2010: The Nationals trade reliever Matt Capps to the Twins for prospects Wilson Ramos and Joe Testa.

2011: The Astros trade Hunter Pence to the Phillies for three prospects.
 
July 30th:

1890: Hall of Famer Casey Stengel is born in Kansas City, Missouri.

1930: A M.L. team plays a night game for the first time. The Indianapolis Indians of the American Association defeat the Reds 17-5 in an exhibition. Big floodlights are used to light the field, making it difficult for players to judge distances while fielding plays.

1959: Willie McCovey makes his M.L. debut with the Giants, collecting four hits.

1973: The Rangers Jim Bibby pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the A's.

1980: During a workout at the Astrodome, Astros pitcher J.R. Richard suffers a stroke. An emergency operation removes a blood clot from behind his collarbone. He would never pitch again.

1982: To make room for more seats, the first place Braves remove the tee-pee of mascot Chief Noc-a-homa. The Braves would then lose 19 of 21 games, blowing a 10.5 game lead. After pressure from fans, the tee-pee is put back in place and the Braves would end their skid and go on to win the division.

1990: Yankees owner George Steinbrenner agrees to be placed on baseball's permanently ineligible list. He would be reinstated in 1993.

1996: The Giants trade Mark Leiter to the Expos for Kirk Rueter.

2001: The Mets trade pitcher Rick Reed to the Twins for outfielder Matt Lawton.

2004: The Mets acquire Kris Benson and Jeff Keppinger from the Pirates for Ty Wigginton, Jose Bautista and Matt Peterson. In another deal with the Devil Rays, the Mets acquire Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunano for prospects Scott Kazmir and Jose Diaz.

2004: The Marlins trade Brad Penny, Hee Seop Choi, and prospect Bill Murphy to the Dodgers for Paul Lo Dua, Gulliermo Mota, and Juan Encarnacion.

2007: Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn headline the class indicted into the Hall of Fame.

2008: The Tigers trade catcher Ivan Rodriguez to the Yankees for pitcher Kyle Farnsworth.

2011: The Rockies trade Ubaldo Jimenez to the Indians for prospects Drew Pomeranz, Alex White, Joe Gardner, and utility player Matt McBride.

2013: In a three team deal, the Red Sox acquire Jake Peavy, the White Sox acquire Avasail Garcia, and the Tigers acquire Jose Iglesias.

2014: The Mariners Felix Hernandez becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to have 14 straight starts of at least seven innings and allowing two or fewer runs.
 
July 31st:

1912: Ty Cobb records his 68th hit of July, the most for any player in a month in M.L. history.

1954: The Braves Joe Adcock hits four home runs in a 15-7 win over the Dodgers.

1965: The Orioles release Robin Roberts.

1981: The 50 day old players strike comes to an end. The players and owners agree on a pooling system for the compensation of free agents.

1983: Brooks Robinson, Juan Marichal, George Kell, and Walter Alston are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1989: The Twins trade last year's A.L. Cy Young Award winner, Frank Viola, to the Mets for Rick Aguilera, Tim Drummond, Kevin Tapini, Jack Savage, and David West.

1990: Nolan Ryan records his 300th win.

1995: The Mets trade Bret Saberhagen and minor league pitcher Dave Swanson to the Rockies for Juan Acevedo and Arnold Gooch.

1996: The Tigers trade Cecil Fielder to the Yankees for Ruben Sierra and minor leaguer Matt Drews.

1997: The Mariners trade Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek to the Red Sox for Heathcliffe Slocumb.

1997: The A's trade Mark McGwire to the Cardinals for Eric Ludwick, T.J. Mathews, and Blake Stein.

2003: The Braves John Smoltz becomes the fastest to record 40 saves in a season.

2004: The long anticipated trade of Nomar Garciaparra is finally accomplished when the Red Sox shortstop is traded to the Cubs as part of a four-team deal which includes the Twins and Expos. Boston acquires shortstop Orlando Cabrera (Expos) and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz (Twins) with Nomar, prospect Matt Murton and cash to Chicago, which had shipped minor league southpaw Justin Jones to the Minnesota for Mientkiewicz, who in turn is sent along with Cubs' shortstop Alex Gonzalez, relief pitcher Francis Beltran, and minor leaguer Brendan Harris to Beantown, which sends the trio of Gonzalez, Beltran, and Harris to the Expos for Cabrera. 2004: The Diamondbacks trade Steve Finley to the Dodgers for Brent Mayne and prospects Koyie Hill, Reggie Abercrombie, and Bill Murphy.

2005: Wade Boggs, Ryne Sandberg, and Jerry Coleman are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2006: The Cubs trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for Cesar Izurtis.

2007: The Rangers trade Mark Teixeira and Ron Mahay to the Braves for Jarrod Saltalamacchia along with four minor leaguers.

2008: The Reds trade Ken Griffey, Jr. to the White Sox for Nick Masset and minor league prospect Danny Richar.

2009: The Padres trade Jake Peavy to the White Sox for pitching prospects Clayton Richard, Dexter Carter, Aaron Poreda, and Adam Russell.

2011: The Astros trade Michael Bourn to the Braves for four players.

2011: The Braves join the Phillies as the only teams in M.L. history with 10,000 losses.
