June 1st:

1923: In a 22-8 win over the Phillies, the Giants become the first team in the century to score in every inning of a game.

1925: Lou Gehrig makes his only pinch-hit at bat of his career. It starts his streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games.

1937: The White Sox Bill Dietrich pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Browns.

1941: Mel Ott hits 400th career home run. He also records his 1,500th RBI in the Giants 3-2 win over the Reds.

1961: After just six games with the Braves, Billy Martin is traded to the Twins for Billy Consolo.

1976: The Twins trade Bert Blyleven and Danny Thompson to the Rangers for Mike Cubbage, Jim Gideon, Bill Singer, Roy Smalley, and cash.

1987: With Joe's win in the Indians 9-6 win over the Tigers, he and Phil Niekro become the winningest pitching brothers in ML history. Their 530 combined wins pass Gaylord and Jim Perry.

1992: With the first pick in the draft, the Astros select Cal State-Fullerton infielder Phil Nevin. With the sixth pick, the Yankees selected infielder from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Derek Jeter.

2007: After being ejected from a game against the Chattanooga Lookouts, Mississippi Braves manager Phil Wellman goes on an epic tirade. He kicks dirt over home plate, then draws the umpire's strike zone in it. He then picks up third base and throws it into the outfield, crawls on the pitchers mound and tosses the rosin bag like a hand grenade at the umpire. Before leaving the field, he picks up second base and takes it with him.


2012: The Mets Johan Santana pitches the first no-hitter in team history in an 8-0 win over the Cardinals. He was benefited by a mistake call in which the third base ump called fair ball. Santana threw 134 pitches.
 
June 2nd:

1891: The Reds Charley 'Old Hoss' Radbourn records his 300th win in a 10-8 victory over the Boston Beaneaters.

1935: Babe Ruth announces his retirement.

1941: Lou Gehrig dies at age 41 from ALS. The disease would become known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease".

1987: With the first overall pick in the draft, the Mariners select Ken Griffey Jr.

1990: The Mariners Randy Johnson pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

1999: With the first selection in the draft, the Devil Rays select North Carolina high school star Josh Hamilton.

2000: The Devil Rays Fred McGriff hits his 400th home run.

2010: Ken Griffey Jr. announces his retirement.

2010: After retiring the first 26 Indians in order,Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga appears to have pitched a perfect game when he induces a ground ball to first from Jason Donald. Though he was clearly beaten to the base, umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe. After the game, Joyce saw the replay and tearfully admitted his mistake that cost Galarraga the perfect game.
 
June 3rd:

1888: The San Francisco Examiner publishes for the first time Ernest L. Thayer's poem Casey at the Bat.

1902: In the Cardinals 11-9 win over the Beaneaters, pitcher Mike O'Neil hits the first pinch grand slam in ML history.

1918: The Red Sox Dutch Leonard pitches his second career no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Tigers.

1932: In the Yankees 20-13 win over the A's, Lou Gehrig becomes the first player in the century to hit four home runs in a game.

1952: The Red Sox trade Johnny Pesky, Walt Dropo, Fred Hatfield, Don Lenhardt, and Bill Wright to the Tigers for Hoot Evers, George Kell, Johnny Lipon, and Dizzy Trout.

1978: In the Cubs 8-6 win over the Braves, the teams set a ML record by using a combined 14 pitchers.

1993: The Mariners select Alex Rodriguez with the first pick in the draft.

2002: The Blue Jays fire manager Buck Martinez and replace him wit bench coach Carlos Tosca. Martinez was the fifth manager fired since the start of the season.

2003: Sammy Sosa is ejected from the Cubs game against the Devil Rays after his bat shatters and exposes cork that was being used in it.

2010: A day after his blown call cost Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game, umpire Jim Joyce is presented the team's lineup card by Galarraga. The two shared a handshake in a gesture of sportsmanship.

June 4th:

1890: The Giants (Players Leagues) Tim Keefe records his 300th win in a 9-4 victory over the Boston Reds.

1911: The Reds set a ML record with 13 players scoring a run in a 26-3 win over the Braves.

1940: Warren Spahn of South Park High School in Buffalo, New York is signed by the Braves. The future Hall of Famer would win 363 games in his ML career.

1964: Sandy Koufax pitches his third no-hitter in the Dodgers 3-0 win over the Phillies.

1974: More than 25,000 fans attend ten-cent beer night in Cleveland for the Rangers/Indians game. An estimated 60,000 cups are sold. Fans start to get unruly in their behavior. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, home plate umpire Nestor Chylak stops play. The Indians are forced to forfeit the game, giving the Rangers the win.

1986: Barry Bonds hits his first ML home run in the Pirates 12-3 win over the Braves.

1998: The Dodgers trade Hideo Nomo and Brad Clontz to the Mets for Greg McMichael and Dave Mlicki.

2004: In the Braves 8-4 win over the Phillies, 45 year old Julio Franco becomes the oldest player in ML history to hit a grand slam.

2009: Randy Johnson records his 300th win in the Giants 5-1 win over the Nationals.

2010: The Orioles fire manager Dave Trembly and replace him on an interim basis with third base coach Juan Samuel.

2012: Carlos Correa is selected first overall by the Astros, making him the first from Puerto Rico to be selected as the top pick in the draft.
 
June 5th:

1874: Hall of Famer Jack Chesbro is born in North Adams, Massachusetts.

1948: In the Phillies 6-5 win over the Cubs, Richie Ashburn extends his hitting streak to 23 games, tying the ML rookie record.

1973: The Rangers select high school pitching star David Clyde out of Houston, TX and push him into immediate service. He wound up winning seven of his 25 decisions in his three years with the team. The Rangers passed on selecting future Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Dave Winfield.

1974: Reggie Jackson starts a fight with A's teammate Billy North in the clubhouse at Tiger Stadium. Jackson injures his shoulder. Teammate Ray Fosse, trying to separate the two, suffers a crushed disk in his neck that ends his season.

1981: Nolan Ryan issues his 1,777th walk, passing Early Wynn for the most all time.

1992: Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle's record of 1,509 RBIs among switch-hitters.

2000: The Marlins select Adrian Gonzalez with the first overall pick in the draft.

2002: The Rangers Juan Gonzalez becomes the first native of Puerto Rico to hit 400 home runs.

2008: The Braves Chipper Jones joins Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray as the only switch-hitters in ML history to hit 400 home runs.

June 6th:

1892: Benjamin Harrison becomes the first US President to attend a ML game. He watches the Senators lose 7-4 in 11 innings to Cincinnati.

1925: Eddie Collins records his 3,000th hit.

1944: Due to the Allied invasion at Normandy known as D-Day, all ML games scheduled are cancelled.

1957: In the bottom of the second inning of the Cubs/Dodgers game at Ebbets Field, the game is delayed due to poor visibility. After an 86 minute delay, the game is called, marking the first postponement due to fog.

1978: The Braves select Arizona State star Bob Horner with the first overall pick in the draft and immediately promotes him to the majors.

1990: The Yankees fire manager Bucky Dent and replace him with Stump Merrill.

1992: Eddie Murray records his 1,510th RBI, breaking Mickey Mantle's record for switch-hitters.

2003: MLB suspends Sammy Sosa eight games for using a corked bat against the Devil Rays.

2007: The Padres Trevor Hoffman becomes the first reliever to record 500 saves.
 
June 7th:

1892: In a 2-1 loss to Brooklyn, Cleveland's Jack Doyle becomes the first in ML history to record a pinch-hit, batting for pitcher George Davies.

1966: With the first pick in the draft, the Mets select high school catcher Steve Chilcott, who would never appear in the majors. With the second pick, the A's select future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.

1967: In a 4-3 loss to the Giants, the Reds set a ML record by playing in their 11th straight game decided by one run.

1982: The Dodgers Steve Garvey becomes the fifth player to appear in 1,000 straight games, joining Lou Gehrig, Everett Scott, Billy Williams, and Joe Sewell.

2007: With the Yankees 10-3 victory over the White Sox, Joe Torre records his 2,000th managerial win.
 
June 8th:

1934: The Reds becomes the first team to travel by plane when 19 players are flown to Chicago for a series against the Cubs.

1961: In the seventh inning of a 10-8 loss to the Reds, the Braves become the first team in ML history to hit four straight home runs. Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, and Frank Thomas hit the consecutive homers.

1965: In the first ever MLB Draft, the Royals make Rick Monday out of Arizona State the first ever selection.

1968: In the fifth inning, the Phillies Howie Bedell hits a sacrifice fly that ends Don Drysdale's scoreless innings streak at 58 2/3.

1982: Hall of Famer Satchel Paige dies at age 75.

1986: The Orioles defeat the Yankees 18-9 in the longest nine inning game in AL history, taking four hours and 16 minutes to complete.

1989: After Pirates take a 10-0 lead on the Phillies in the first inning, team announcer Jim Rooker announces he will walk to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia if they lost. The Phillies rallied to win 15-11. Keeping his word, Rooker organized a charity walk after the season between the two Pennsylvania cities.

1996: With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Warren Morris hits a two run home run to give LSU a dramatic 9-8 victory over Miami to win the College World Series. For Morris, who missed 39 games with a broken bone in his wrist, it was his only home run that season.

2005: The Phillies trade Placido Polanco to the Tigers for Ugueth Urbina and Ramon Martinez.

2005: At age 29, Alex Rodriguez becomes the youngest player in ML history to reach 400 home runs.

2012: Six Mariners combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers. After starter Kevin Millwood left with an injury, he was followed by relievers Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League, and Tom Wilhelmsen.

2016: Kelly Johnson becomes the second player in ML history to be traded from one team to another in consecutive years when the Braves send him to the Mets for minor leaguer Akeel Morris and cash. The other player was Chad Kreuter, who was traded from the White Sox to the Angels in 1997 and 1998.
 
June 9th:

1914: Honus Wagner records his 3,000th hit.

1934: In the eighth inning of an 8-1 loss to the Senators, the Red Sox Lefty Grove becomes the first pitcher in ML history to allow six doubles in an inning.

1963: The Colt .45s defeat the Giants 3-0 in the first ever game to be played on a Sunday night. MLB allows the Colt .45s to play their Sunday games in the evenings due to the heat and humidity in Houston during the Summer months.

1990: In the Dodgers 5-4, 11 inning win over the Padres, Eddie Murray homers from both sides of the plate for the tenth time, tying Mickey Mantle's ML record.

1999: After being ejected in the 12th inning, Mets manager Bobby Valentine returns to the dugout wearing glasses and a fake mustache. He gets caught and is suspended two games.

2008: Ken Griffey Jr. records his 600th home run.

2015: The Giants Chris Heston pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Mets.

June 10th:

1944: At 15 years old, Reds pitcher Joe Nuxhall becomes the youngest youngest to appear in a ML game this century. He pitches the ninth inning in a 13-0 loss to the Cardinals, allowing five walks, two hits, five runs, and wild pitch, and doesn't record an out.

1959: The Indians Rocky Colavito hits four home runs in an 11-8 win over the Orioles.

1966: The Indians Sonny Siebert pitches a no-hitter, the only one that season in the majors, in a 2-0 win over the Senators.

1972: Hank Aaron hits his 649th home run, passing Willie Mays for second on the all time list.

1997: The Marlins Kevin Brown pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Giants.

2012: The Red Sox play in front of a sellout crowd at Fenway Park for the 745th straight game, passing the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers for the most consecutive in North American professional sports history.
 
June 11th:

1938: The Reds Johnny Vander Meer pitches the first of two straight no-hitters in a 3-0 win over the Boston Bees.

1957: The Dodgers Roy Campanella hits his 237th home run as a catcher, breaking the NL record.

1968: The Reds trade Milt Pappas, Ted Davidson, and Bob Johnson to the Braves for Clay Carroll, Tony Cloninger, and Woody Woodard.

1981: The Mariners 8-2 win over Orioles is the last before the players go on strike over free agent compensation. The work stoppage lasts 50 days causing the cancellation of 712 games.

1985: The Phillies Von Hayes becomes the first player in ML history to homer twice in the first inning, doing so in a 26-7 rout of the Mets.

1990: Nolan Ryan pitches his sixth no-hitter in the Rangers 5-0 win over the A's.

2003: Six Astros pitchers combine to throw a no-hitter in a win over the Yankees. Starter Roy Oswalt was followed by relievers Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel, and Billy Wagner.
 
June 12th:

1839: Even with a questionable eye witness account, Abner Doubleday is given credit for establishing the first ever baseball game.

1880: Worcester's Lee Richmond pitches the first perfect game in a win over Cleveland.

1939: The Baseball Hall of Fame is dedicated in Cooperstown, New York.

1939: In an exhibition game against the team's AA affiliate Kansas City Blues, Lou Gehrig plays in his final game wearing a Yankee uniform. He grounded out in his only at bat.

1940: The Cardinals trade Ducky Medwick and Curt Davis to the Dodgers for Ernie Koy, Carl Doyle, two minor leaguers, and cash.

1954: The Braves Jim Wilson pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Phillies.

1957: Stan Musial plays in his 823rd straight game, breaking the NL record.

1970: The Pirates Dock Ellis pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Padres. Ellis would later claim he was under the influence of LSD while pitching in that game.

1979: The Tigers fire manager Les Moss and hires Sparky Anderson.

1981: The first in season work stoppage in baseball history begins. The players would be on strike for 50 days.

1983: Before a game against the Giants, the Braves Dale Murphy visits a six year old girl in the stands who had lost both arms and a leg due to a power line accident. The nurse asks Murphy if he could hit a home run for the injured little girl. He would hit two homers, helping the Braves to a 3-2 win.

1996: Marge Scott is forced to give up her role as the Reds managing partner for two years due to comments she made about Hitler in an ESPN interview. In the ill-fated interview, Schott said "Everybody knows [Hitler] was good at the beginning, but he just went too far".

1997: The Giants defeat the Rangers 4-3 in the first regular season interleague game in ML history.

2007: The Tigers Justin Verlander pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Brewers.

2012: In the Yankees 6-4 win over the Braves, Alex Rodriguez hits his 23rd career grand slam, tying Lou Gehrig's ML record.
 
June 13th:

1905: The Giants Christy Mathewson pitches a no-hitter, his second, in a 1-0 win over the Cubs.

1913: Christy Mathewson records his 300th win in the Giants 3-2 victory over the Cubs.

1940: In the first Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, the Red Sox defeat the Cubs 10-9. The game was shortened to six innings due to rain.

1975: The Indians trade Gaylord Perry to the Rangers for pitchers Jim Bibby, Jackie Brown, and Rick Waits, along with cash.

1984: The Indians trade Rick Sutcliffe, George Frazier, and Ron Hassey to the Cubs for Joe Carter, Mel Hall, Don Schulze, and minor league pitcher Darryl Banks.

1994: The Cubs Ryne Sandberg announces his sudden retirement. He would return two years later.

1999: The Astros game against the Padres is suspended when manager Larry Dierker suffers a gran mal seizure in the dugout. Dierker would return to the team after recovering for four weeks.

2003: Roger Clemens records his 300th win in the Yankees 5-2 win over the Cardinals. In the second inning, he also joined Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton as the only pitchers in ML history to record 4,000 strikeouts.

2012: The Giants Matt Cain pitches a perfect game in a 10-0 win over the Astros. Ted Barrett became the first umpire to be behind the plate for two perfect games. He was also behind the plate for David Cone's perfect game against the Expos in 1999.
 
June 14th:

1919: A first inning single for Joe Wilhoit of the Western League's Wichita Jobbers starts a 69 game hitting streak, the longest in the history of professional baseball.

1952: The Braves purchase Hank Aaron from the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro League. The assign him to the club's Class C team in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

1966: In the longest uninterrupted game in professional baseball history, the Miami Marlins defeat the St. Petersburg Cardinals 4-3 in 29 innings. The Florida State League game takes six hours and 59 minutes to play.

1985: Earl Weaver returns to the Orioles dugout after retiring two years ago, taking over for his replacement, Joe Altobelli.

1990: The National League announces plans to expand from 12 to 14 teams.

1996: Cal Ripken Jr. plays in his 2,216th straight game, breaking the world record held by Sachio Kinugasa of the Hiroshima Carp of Japan's Central League.

2005: Before the seventh inning, the umpires are asked to check the glove of Angels pitcher Brendan Donnelly. Pine tar is found and he is ejected. It causes an angry exchange between managers Mike Scioscia and the Nationals Frank Robinson, instigating a brawl between the two teams.
 
June 15th:

1938: Hall of Famer Billy Williams is born in Whistler, Alabama.

1938: The Reds Johnny Vander Meer pitches his second straight no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Dodgers.

1958: Hall of Famer Wade Boggs is born in Omaha, Nebraska.

1963: The Giants Juan Marichal pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Colt .45s.

1964: The Cardinals trade pitcher Ernie Broglio to the Cubs for Lou Brock.

1968: The Phillies fire manager Gene Mauch and replace him with Bob Skinner, who had been managing the team's minor league franchise in San Diego.

1976: Massive flooding in Houston doesn't allow for the umpiring crew to make it to the ballpark, causing the first postponement for the Astrodome.

1976: The Orioles trade Ken Holtzman, Doyle Alexander, Jimmy Freeman, Grant Jackson, and Elrod Hendricks to the Yankees for Tippy Martinez, Rudy May, Scott McGregor, Dave Pagan, and Rick Dempsey.

1977: The Mets trade Tom Seaver to the Reds for Pat Zachary, Doug Flynn, and two minor leaguers. The Mets also deal Dave Kingman to the Angels for Bobby Valentine and a minor leaguer.

1982: The Red Sox Jeff Reardon records his 341st save, breaking Rollie Fingers' record.

1983: The Cardinals trade Keith Hernandez to the Mets for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey.

1999: Brewers pitcher Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, records the first hit in his 11 year career.
 
June 16th:

1916: The Braves Tom Hughes pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Pirates.

1956: Charlie Grimm resigns as Braves manager and is replaced by Fred Haney.

1978: The Reds Tom Seaver pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Cardinals.

1991: In the Braves 7-6 loss to the Expos, Otis Nixon breaks the NL and ties the ML Mark set by Eddie Collins in 1912 with six stolen bases.

1996: Hall of Fame broadcaster Mel Allen dies at age 83.

2014: Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn dies at age 54.
 
June 17th:

1915: In the lonest relief appearance in ML history, George Washington Zabel pitches 18 1/3 innings in the Cubs 4-3', 19 inning win over the Brooklyn Robins.

1943: Red Sox player/manager Joe Cronin becomes the first player to hit a pinch hit home run in both games of a doubleheader. The Red Sox won the first game over the A's 5-4 and lost the nightcap 8-7.

1960: Ted Williams hits his 500th home run.

1987: Former Yankees and Royals manager Dick Howser dies of brain cancer at age 51.

1993: By a 26-2 vote, the owners approve an expansion of the playoffs. Both leagues would realign to three divisions, the top second place team wins the Wild Card, and a best of five round before the LCS is added.

2007: The Blue Jays Frank Thomas hits his 244th home run as a designated hitter, breaking Edgar Martinez's record.

2008: The Mets fire manager Willie Randolph and replace him in a interim basis with Jerry Manuel.

2009: The Astros Ivan Rodriguez makes his 2,227th appearance as a catcher, breaking Carlton Fisk's record.
 
June 18th:

1938: After accepting an offer with the team to coach first base, Babe Ruth puts on a Dodgers uniform for the first time and takes batting practice. He would quit after the season.

1947: The Reds Ewell pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Braves.

1950: In the second of a doubleheader against the A's, the Indians set an AL record with 14 first inning runs on their way to a 21-2 win.

1960: After the Giants fire manager Bill Rigney, 66 year old Tom Sheehan is named his replacement, making him to the oldest to be a first time skipper in ML history.

1961: Eddie Gaedel is found dead in his Chicago home. In 1951, the 3'7" Gaedel is brought in by Browns owner Bill Veeck to leadoff, drawing a walk in his only at bat.

1967: The Astros Don Wilson pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Braves.

1977: Reggie Jackson is pulled from a game against the Red Sox by Yankees manager Billy Martin after a lack of effort on a fly ball turns into a double for Jim Rice. The two start yelling at each other in the dugout and have to be separated.

1979: Billy Martin is named Yankees manager for the second time, replacing Bob Lemon.

1986: The Angels Don Sutton records his 300th win.

1989: The Phillies trade Juan Samuel to the Mets for Lenny Dykstra, Roger McDowell, and a player to be named later (Tom Edens).

2001: Cal Ripken, Jr. announces he will retire at the end of the season.

2003: Hall of Famer Larry Doby dies at age 79.

2012: After a ten week trial, Roger Clemens is acquitted on charges that he obstructed justice and lied to Congress during testimony in 2008.
 
June 19th:

1846: The New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nine play the first organized baseball game in history.

1903: Lou Gehrig is born in Manhattan, New York.

1942: The Braves Paul Waner records his 3,000th hit.

1942: Joe DiMaggio strikes out three times for the only time in his 1,787 career games.

1952: The Dodgers Carl Erskine pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Cubs.

1974: For the second time in 14 months, the Royals Steve Busby pitches a no-hitter, doing so in a 2-0 win over the Brewers.

1990: In the Giants 4-3 loss to the Padres, Gary Carter plays catcher in his 1,862nd career game, breaking Al Lopez's NL record.

1994: In a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays, the Tigers homer in their 25th straight game, tying the ML record.

1996: Ozzie Smith announces he will retire at the end of the season.

2008: The Mariners fire manager John McLaren and replace him with bench coach Jim Riggleman.

2008: In a 5-4 loss to the Rangers in Arlington, the Braves set a ML record with their 22nd straight one-run loss on the road.

2011: Edwin Rodriguez resigns as Marlins manager.

2015: Alex Rodriguez records his 3,000th hit.
 
June 20th:

1950: Joe DiMaggio records his 2,000th hit.

1973: The Giants Bobby Bonds hits his 22nd career leadoff home run, breaking Lou Brock's record.

1982: Pete Rose joins Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, and Carl Yastrzemski as the only players in ML history to appear in 3,000 games.

1986: Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn, Bo Jackson, signs a deal with the Royals.

1991: Ivan Rodriguez makes his ML debut with the Rangers. At 19 years old, he becomes the youngest catcher in ML history.

2001: With his 38th and the season, Barry Bonds breaks the record for home runs before the All Star Break.

2004: With his dad in attendance on Fathers Day, Ken Griffey, Jr. hits his 500th home run.

2007: Sammy Sosa hits his 600th career home run.

2008: The Blue Jays fire manager John Gibbons. He is replaced by Cato Gastonia, who managed the team to back to back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

2011: The Marlins announce that 80 year old Jack McKeon will take over as manager on an interim basis after the resignation of Edwin Rodriguez the prior day.

2015: The Nationals Max Scherzer pitches a no-hitter in a win against the Pirates. He was one out away from a perfect game, but Jose Tabata leaned in, intentionally many believe, and got hit by a pitch.

1916: The Red Sox Rube Foster pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Highlanders.

1951: Bill Veeck purchases controlling interest in the Browns.

1959: Stan Musial doubles twice in the Cardinals 5-1 win over the Pirates, passing Honus Wagner's NL record of 651 doubles.

1964: The Phillies Jim Bunning pitches a perfect game in a 6-0 win over the Mets. He becomes the first modern pitcher to throw a no-hitter in both leagues.

1989: In the White Sox 7-3 win over the Yankees, Carlton Fisk hits his 307th home run as a catcher, breaking Yogi Berta's AL record.

1998: The Dodgers fire manager Bill Russell and replace him with Glenn Hoffman. Tommy Lasorda also takes over as general manager.

2005: The Reds fire manager Dave Miley and replace him with Jerry Narron.

2009: With the Cardinals 12-5 victory over the Royals, Tony La Russa records his 2,500th managerial win.
 
June 22nd:

1926: The Cardinals acquire Grover Cleveland Alexander off waivers from the Cubs.

1932: The NL approves numbers on the jerseys to identify players.

1944: The Braves Jim Tobin pitches a five inning no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Phillies. The nightcap of the doubleheader was shortened.

1976: In the seventh inning of a 4-2 Padres win over the Giants, Randy Jones ties Christy Mathewson's NL record of 68 innings without issuing a walk. Jones' streak ends the next inning.

1982: Pete Rose records his 3,772nd hit, passing Hank Aaron for second on the all time list.

1984: In a ceremony at go home plate in the Metrodome, Carl Pohlad officially takes ownership of the Twins with Calvin Griffith and sister Thelma Hayes signing letter of intent papers. The sale ends the longest family ownership in baseball. The Griffith Family had owned the team since 1920, when they were the Washington Senators.

1987: After two weeks of training, Tom Seaver ends his comeback attempt with the Mets and announces his retirement.

1993: In what was his final appearance, Carlton Fisk catches his 2,226th game, passing Bob Boone for the most all time.

2001: The Braves trade John Rocker and minor leaguer Troy Cameron to the Indians for Steve Karsay and Steve Reed.

2002: Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile is found dead in his Chicago hotel room at the age of 33. At Wrigley Field, where the Cardinals were supposed to play, Cubs player rep Joe Girardi announces the postponement to the fans due to the tragedy.
