June 23rd:

1961: The Twins fire manager Cookie Lavagetto and replace him with Sam Mele.

1963: Mets outfielder Jimmy Piersall celebrates his 100th career home run by going backwards while running the bases. He is released by manager Casey Stengel two days later.

1973: Just 20 days after pitching his high school team to a state title, David Clyde makes his ML debut with the Rangers. He pitches five innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight in them Rangers 4-3 win over the Twins.

1977: After managing one game, a 10-8 win over the Twins, Eddie Stanky abruptly resigns as Rangers manager. He would return to Mobile, Alabama and resume his job as coach for the University of South Alabama.

1984: Aganst the Cardinals, the Cubs Ryne Sandberg hits a leadoff homer in the ninth to tie the game at 9-9. Then he hits a two run home run with two out in the tenth to tie the game again. The Cubs would win 12-11 on an RBI single in the 11th by Dave Owen.

1986: In a 6-5 win over the Dodgers, the Braves set a NL record by stranding 18 runners on base.

2003: Barry Bonds steals his 500th base, becoming the first player with 500 stolen bases and 500 home runs.

2007: In a Southern League game in Montgomery against the Biscuits, Mobile BayBears pitcher Matt Elliott locks himself into the bathroom. He angerly broke the lock after allowing the game tying run. He misses the rest of the game because he was locked in for 47 minutes.

2010: The Marlins fire manager Fredi Gonzalez and replace him with AAA skipper Edwin Rodriguez.

2011: Upset by the team's lack of commitment about his future, Jim Riggleman resigns as Nationals manager.

2012: The Phillies Jim Thome sets a ML record with his 13th walk-off home run in a 7-6 victory over the Rays.
 
June 24th:

1947: Jackie Robinson steals home in the Dodgers 4-2 win over the Pirates. It was the first of 19 times he would do so in his career.

1950: Playing for the Giants Class B team in Trenton, Willie Mays makes his professional debut.

1970: The Reds defeat the Giants 5-4 in the final game at Crosley Field.

1979: Rickey Henderson makes his ML debut in the A's 5-1 loss to the Rangers. He records two hits and steals the first of his ML record 1,406 bases.

1992: Commissioner Fay Vincent permanently suspends Yankees pitcher Steve Howe for repeated drug offenses. In November, an arbitrator would overturn the ban.

2011: A day after the abrupt resignation of Jim Riggleman, the Nationals name bench coach John McLaren as interim manager.
 
June 25th:

1937: In an 11-2 win over the Dodgers, the Cubs Augie Galan becomes the first player in NL history to homer from both sides of the plate.

1961: In the Orioles 9-8, 14 inning win over the Angels, the team's combine to set a ML record by using 16 pitchers.

1968: In the Giants 9-0 win over the Dodgers, Bobby Bonds joins Bill Duggleby in 1898 as the only players in ML history to hit a grand slam for their first ML home run.

1976: The Rangers Toby Harrah becomes the first shortstop in ML history to play both games of a doubleheader and not have a fielding chance.

1988: Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in his 1,000th consecutive game.

1998: In the Cubs 6-4 loss to the Tigers, Sammy Sosa hits his 19th home run in June, breaking the ML record for homers in a month.

1999: The Cardinals Jose Jimenez pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

2007: Manny Parra of the Nashville Sounds pitches the eighth perfect game in PCL history, doing so in a 3-0 win over the Round Rock Express.
 
June 26th:

1906: Catcher Herbert Whitney of the Iowa State League's Burlington Pathfinders becomes the first professional baseball to die as a result of being hit by a pitch. The fatal incident happened two days prior in a game against the Waterloo Microbes.

1916: In a game against the White Sox, the Indians become the first team to wear numbers on their uniforms.

1935: In a sweep against the Braves, the Pirates Lloyd Waner sets a ML record with 18 putouts in a doubleheader.

1946: Giants player/manager Mel Ott ends his playing career, staying solely as the team's skipper.

1960: In a doubleheader against the Pirates, future Hall of Famer Ron Santo makes his ML debut, going 3-7 in the two games.

1962: The Red Sox Earl Wilson pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Angels.

1993: Hall of Famer Roy Campanella dies at age 71.

2001: After being ejected in the seventh inning of the Pirates 7-6, 12 inning win over the Brewers, manager Lloyd McClendon picks up first base and carries it to the dugout.

2010: The Diamondbacks Edwin Jackson pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Rays.

2011: The Nationals name senior advisor Davey Johnson as manager for the rest of the season.
 
June 27th:

1977: The Giants Willie McCovey becomes the first player in ML history to hit two homers in an inning twic in his career.

1977: The Rangers name Billy Hunter manager.

1980: The Dodgers Jerry Reuss pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Giants.

1982: In a 2-0, 14 inning win over the Reds, the Braves tie a ML record by turning seven double plays.

1986: In a 7-6, 12 inning win over the Reds, the Giants Robby Thompson sets a ML record by being thrown out four times trying to steal a base.

1993: In the Mets 5-3 defeat to the Cardinals, Anthony Young breaks the ML record by losing his 24th straight decision.

1999: The Mariners defeat the Rangers 5-2 in the final game at the Kingdome.

2002: The Indians trade Bartolo Colon to the Expos for Lee Stevens and cash along with minor league prospects Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Grady Sizemore.

2010: In the Phillies 10-2 win over the Blue Jays, Jamie Moyer allows his 506th home run, breaking the record held by Hall of Famer Robin Roberts.

2011: After MLB refuses to sign off on a transaction that would have provided the team $385 million, the Dodgers file for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court.
 
June 28th:

1907: The Senators steal 13 bases off Yankees catcher Branch Rickey.

1910: In the Cubs 11-1 win over the Reds, Joe Tinker becomes the first player in ML history to steal home twice in a game.

1939: In sweeping the A's in a doubleheader by scores of 23-2 and 10-0, The Yankees set a ML record by hitting eight homers in the first game, then add five more to set another record for home runs in two straight games. They also set an AL record in the first game by collecting 53 total bases.

1959: In the first inning of a 6-0 loss to the Giants, Wally Post of the Phillies becomes the first player in ML history to throw out two runners from the outfield in an inning.

1962: Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane dies at age 59.

1970: In the last games at Forbes Field, the Pirates sweep a doubleheader from the Cubs, 3-2 and 4-1. It had been the Pirates home since 1909.

1979: The Giants trade Bill Madlock, Lenny Randle, and Dave Roberts to the Pirates for Ed Whitson, Fred Breining, and Al Holland.

2000: The Rockies become the fastest team in ML history to draw 20 million fans.

2001: Tony Gwynn announces he will retire at the end of the season.

2007: The Astros Craig Biggio records his 3,000th hit.

2009: In the Yankees 4-2 win over the Mets, Mariano Rivera joins Trevor Hoffman as the only relievers with 500 saves.

2013: The Braves retire Chipper Jones #10.
 
June 29th:

1897: the Chicago Colts (later Cubs) set the record for runs scored in a 36-7 win over the Louisville Colonels.

1905: Archibald "Moonlight" Graham enters the game for the Giants in the eighth inning against the Brooklyn Superbas. He would never bat in the majors as his time as a defensive replacement would be his only appearance. He would be immortalized in W.P. Kinsella's book "Shoeless Joe" and in the movie "Field of Dreams".

1913: Only one baseball is used in the Reds 9-6 win over the Cubs. There were no foul balls or home runs in the game.

1936: Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew is born in Paulette, Idaho.

1941: In a doubleheader against the Senators, Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 41 gamesin the opener, tying the AL record, then breaks that mark in the nightcap.

1969: Billy Williams plays in his 896tj straight game, breaking Stan Musial's NL record.

1972: The Braves trade Orlando Cepeda to the A's for Denny McLain.

1975: In the first of a doubleheader against the Padres, the Reds play their 14th straight errorless game, breaking the ML record. The streak to extend to 15 in the nightcap.

1986: The White Sox trade Tom Seaver to the Red Sox for Steve Lyons.

1990: For the first time since 1917, two no-hitters are pitched on the same day. The A's Dave Stewart does so in a 5-0 win over the Blue Jays, then later, the Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela in a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals.

2000: At Shea Stadium, Braves reliever John Rocker makes his first appearance since his controversial comments about New York in a Sports Illustrated article. For security, 700 police officers are at the game, instead of the usual 60.

2000: The Indians trade David Justice to the Yankees for Ricky Ledee and two players to be named later.

2004: Randy Johnson records his 4,000th strikeout.

2005: Craig Biggio is hit by a pitch for the 268th time, breaking Don Baylor's record.

2010: In the bottom of the 11th in the College World Series, Whit Merrifield hits a walk-off RBI single, giving South Carolina a 2-1 win over UCLA and their first national championship in any men's sport.
 
June 30th:

1908: Cy Young pitches his third no-hitter in the Red Sox 8-0 win over the Highlanders.

1909: The Pirates lose to the Cubs 3-2 in the first game at Forbes Field.

1938: The Phillies lose to the Giants 14-1 in the final game at the Baker Bowl.

1948: The Indians Bob Lemon pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

1961: With a 5-1 victory over the Senators, the Yankees Whitey Ford becomes the first pitcher in AL history to win eight games in a month.

1962: Sandy Koufax pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 Dodgers win over the Mets.

1970: The Reds lose to the Braves 8-2 in the first game at Riverfront Stadium.

1978: Willie McCovey hits his 500th career home run.

1978: Larry Doby replaces Bob Lemon as manager of the White Sox.

1995: Eddie Murray records his 3,000th hit.

2008: Demolition begins on Detroit's Tiger Stadium.
