1879: In a 15-4 loss to the Providence Grays, 23-year old Jim McCormick makes his managerial debut for the Cleveland Blues. He's the youngest manager in M.L. history.

1883: The Gothams, who later became the Giants, defeat the Boston Beaneaters 7-5 in their first game.

1884: Playing against the Louisville Eclipse in an American Association game, Moses Fleetwood Walker of the Toledo Blue Stockings becomes the first black player in the major leagues.

1901: Against the Tigers, Herm McFarland hits the first grand slam in A.L. history. In that same game, the Tigers commit 12 errors.

1906: The Phillies John Lush pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers.

1920: Babe Ruth hits his first home run as a Yankee.

1925: At the age of 17, the A's Jimmie Foxx singles in his first M.L. at bat.

1926: Satchel Paige makes his pitching debut in the Negro Southern League.

1951: In an 8-3 win over the White Sox, Mickey Mantle hits his first home run.

1980: Commissioner Kuhn fines the Mets because of disparaging remarks against the Yankees made by Jerry Della Femina, who was their advertising agency's president.

1991: The Rangers Nolan Ryan pitches his seventh no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays. At age 44, he becomes the oldest in M.L. history to pitch a no-hitter.

1991: Rickey Henderson collects his 939th career stolen base, breaking Lou Brock's M.L. record.

2000: The Braves beat the Dodgers 2-1 to extend their franchise record winning streak to 14 games.

2002: Trevor Hoffman records his 321st save with the Padres, setting the M.L. record for the most with one team.

2012: With an Orioles victory over the Yankees, Buck Showalter collects his 1,000th managerial win.
 
May 2nd:

1876: Chicago's Ross Barnes hits the first home run in National League history.

1887: Hall of Famer Eddie Collins is born in Millerton, New York.

1923: The Senators Walter Johnson records his 100th career shutout in a 3-0 win over the Yankees.

1930: A Western League game in Des Moines, Iowa against Wichita is the first pro baseball game played at night with permanent lights.

1939: Before a game against the Tigers, Lou Gehrig benches himself, telling Yankees manager John McGraw that it's "for the good of the team". His streak of 2,130 consecutive games played comes to an end.

1944: Ted Williams receives his pilot wings and is commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

1972: Vida Blue ends his holdout, signing a $63,000 deal with the A's.

2000: The Braves win their 15th straight game, defeating the Dodgers 5-3.

2001: At the Metrodome, 40 Twins fans are ejected and the game against the Yankees is delayed for 12 minutes as trash is thrown at former Minnesota 2nd baseman Chuck Knoblauch. Coins, golf balls, and plastic beer bottles were thrown at him. Twins manager Tom Kelly tried to calm fans down on the field.

2002: In a 15-4 win over the White Sox, the Mariners Mike Cameron becomes the 13th player in M.L. history to hit four home runs in a game.

2003: The Players Association agrees to a two year experiment to give home field advantage in the World Series to the winning league in the All-Star Game.
 
May 3rd:

1936: Joe DiMaggio makes his M.L. debut. He collects three hits, including a triple, and scores three times in the Yankees 14-5 win over the Browns.

1979: Bobby Bonds joins Willie Mays as the only players in M.L. history to record 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases.

1980: With a 3-2 win over the Orioles, the Rangers Fergie Jenkins joins Cy Young, Jim Bunning, and Gaylord Perry as the only pitchers in M.L. history to win 100 games in both leagues.

2001: Johnny Oates resigns as Rangers manager and is replaced by third base coach Jerry Narron.

2005: The White Sox set a M.L. record by having a lead in all 28 games played up to that point in a season.

2006: Major League Baseball sells the Nationals to real estate developed Theodore Lerner for $450 million.

2008: The Mets Carlos Delgado his his 435th career home run, passing Juan Gonzalez for the most among Puerto Rico born players.

2011: The Twins Francisco Liriano pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.
 
May 4th:

1931: To put less strain on his legs, Babe Ruth plays first base, moving Lou Gehrig to right field. Gehrig commits an error that helps the Senators beat the Yankees 7-3.

1954: The Phillies and Cardinals set a M.L. record by using 42 players. The Phillies win the game in 14-10 in eleven innings.

1963: In a 7-5 loss to the Cubs, Braves pitcher Bob Shaw sets a M.L. record by committing five balks.

1966: Willie Mays sets the N.L. record with his 512th career home run.

1969: In a 3-1 win over the Giants, the Astros set a N.L. record by turning seven double plays. First baseman Curt Blefary takes part in all seven.

1975: The Astros Bob Watson scores the one millionth run in M.L history.

1981: The Yankees Ron Davis sets a M.L. record by striking out eight straight Angels batters in a 4-2 win.

1999: After 6,136 career at bats, Mark Grace hits his first career grand slam in the Cubs 12-11 win over the Rockies.

2005: In the fifth matchup of 300 game winners, Greg Maddux and the Cubs defeat Roger Clemens and the Astros 3-2.

2007: In the second inning, 49 year old Mets first baseman Julio Franco faces off against 43-year old Diamondbacks hurler Randy Johnson in the oldest pitcher-hitter matchup in M.L. history. Franco homered off Johnson, extending his M.L. record of the oldest player to hit a home run.

2010: Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell dies at age 92.
 
May 5th:

1904: Cy Young pitches the first perfect game in A.L. history in the Red Sox 3-0 win over the A's.

1917: The Browns Ernie Koob pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

1953: In the Braves 10-3 win over the Reds, Max Surkont sets a M.L. record with eight consecutive strikeouts.

1962: The Angels Bo Belinsky pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Orioles.

1978: Pete Rose records his 3,000th hit.

1999: In a 13-6 win over the Cubs, the Rockies join the Giants in 1923 and the Cardinals in 1964 as the only teams to score in every inning of a game in the century.

2000: Tommy Lasorda is named the manager of the U.S. Olympic Baseball team.

2004: The Mets Mike Piazza sets a M.L. record for catchers with 352 career home runs.
 
May 6th:

1906: Exposition Park in Pittsburgh becomes the first ballpark to use a protective tarp to cover the infield, keeping it dry during a storm. The tarp is used to keep a dry infield for the next day's Pirates game against the Cubs.

1915: Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth hits the first two home runs of his career.

1917: The Browns Bob Groom pitches a no-hitter in a doubleheader nightcap against the White Sox, It's the second straight day a Browns pitcher has tossed a no-hitter.

1929: The American League announces it will discontinue the MVP Award. It will resume two years later.

1931: Hall of Famer Willie Mays is born in Westfield, Alabama.

1951: The Pirates Cliff Chambers pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Braves.

1953: In his first M.L. start, the Browns Alva Lee Holloman pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the A's. He would never pitch another complete game and won three games in his one year in the majors.

1978: The Dodgers Lee Lacy becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit home runs in consecutive pinch-hit appearances.

1981: The Mariners fire manager Maury Wills and replace him with Rene Lachemann.

1982: The Mariners Gaylord Perry records his 300th win in an 8-2 victory over the Yankees.

1994: With the Cubs 10-1 win over the Pirates, Anthony Young's 27-game losing streak as a starter ends.

1998: In a 2-0 win over the Astros, Cubs rookie pitcher Kerry Wood ties the M.L. record with 20 strikeouts.

2005: In a 6-5 win over the Cardinals, the Padres Trevor Hoffman joins Lee Smith and John Franco as the only pitchers with 400 saves.

2007: Roger Clemens announces from the owners box that he is returning to pitch for the Yankees.

2008: 42 year old Tim Wakefield and 41 year old Mike Timlin combine to shutout the Tigers 5-0. It's the first time since 1900 that two pitchers over 40 years old had combined for a shutout.

2012: In a 4-3 Blue Jays loss to the Angels, 45 year old Omar Vizquel becomes the oldest to play shortstop in M.L. history.
 
May 7th:

1903: In the first meeting of what will become the sport's biggest rivalry, the Pilgrims (later Red Sox) defeat the Highlanders (later Yankees) 6-2 in Boston.

1917: Babe Ruth drives in the only run and pitches a shutout in the Red Sox 1-0 win over Walter Johnson and the Senators.

1941: The Pirates trade future Hall of Famer Lloyd Waner to the Braves for Nick Strincevich.

1959: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers in an exhibition 6-2 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The game was a benefit for Roy Campanella, the former Dodgers catcher who was paralyzed in a car accident in 1958. 93,013 fans attended the game. At a pregame ceremony, Pee Wee Reese pushes Campanella in his wheelchair while the darkened stadium is lighted by candles and matches.

1966: The Yankees fire manager Johnny Keane. GM and former manager Ralph Houk would return to the dugout.

1991: Darryl Strawberry returns to New York as a Dodger. He hits a two run homer, but makes the final out as his former Mets team wins 6-5.

1998: In a 6-0 loss to the Blue Jays, the Mariners tie a M.L. record by stranding 16 runners on base.

1999: The Devil Rays Fred McGriff sets a M.L. record by homering in his 34th ballpark, hitting one in Cleveland's Jacobs Field. However, the Indians rally from 9-1 down and win 20-11.

1999: In the first game in M.L. history started by two Japanese pitchers, then Yankees and Hideki Irabu beat the Mariners and Matt Suzuki 10-1.

2009: The Dodgers Manny Ramirez is suspended 50 games for a positive test for banned substance.

2010: The Phillies Jamie Moyer, at age 47, becomes the oldest pitcher in M.L. history to pitch a shutout in a 7-0 win over the Braves.
 
May 8th:

1878: Outfielder Paul Hines of the Providence Grays becomes the first player in M.L. history to turn an unassisted triple play.

1926: A fire burns the grandstand roof and left field bleachers at Fenway Park.

1929: The Giants Carl Hubbell pitches a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over the Pirates.

1961: The name for the new N.L. team in New York is officially announces as the Mets.

1966: The Cardinals lose 10-5 to the Giants in the final game at Busch Stadium, which was known for most of its time as Sportsman's Park.

1968: The A's Catfish Hunter pitches a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Twins. It was the first perfect game in the A.L. in 46 years.

1971: In a 5-2 Braves win over the Giants, Willie Mays hit his 634th career home run with Hank Aaron hitting his 604th. It marked the first time two members of the 600 home run club homered in the same game.

1973: In a 9-7 loss to the Giants, the Cardinals Bob Gibson sets a M.L. record by making his 242nd straight start.

1973: Ralph Miller, who was the last M.L. player of the nineteenth century, dies at age 100. He pitched for the Bridegrooms in 1898 and Orioles in 1899.

1984: Kirby Puckett makes his M.L. debut, hitting four singles to help the Twins to a 5-0 win over the Angels.

1992: Astros pitcher Butch Henry becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit an inside-the-park home run for his first M.L. hit. It was the only home run of his seven year career.

2012: In the Rangers 10-3 win over the Orioles, Josh Hamilton becomes the 16th player in M.L. history to hit four home runs in one game.
 
May 8th:

1947: After verbally abusing Jackie Robinson with racial slurs in their game the prior day, the Phillies Ben Chapman tells the Dodgers he'd like to make amends by posing for newspaper photographers with him. Robinson agrees to the staged gesture. Chapman's gesture is prompted by the bad press and also anger from Commissioner Chandler.

1960: Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is born in Los Angeles, California.

1967: Roger Maris hits his first N.L. home run, helping the Cardinals 6-3 win over the Pirates.

1973: Johnny Bench, for the second time, homers three times off Steve Carlton in helping the Reds beat the Phillies 9-7.

1987: In a 9-6 win over the White Sox, the Orioles Eddie Murray becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in consecutive games.

1995: The Indians tie a M.L. record by scoring eight runs before recording an out.

1999: In a 26-2 win over Maryland, Marshall McDougal of Florida State hits an NCAA record six straight home runs. He drives in 16 runs, also an NCAA record.

2001: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson joins Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood as the only pitchers in M.L. history to strike out 20 batters in nine innings.

2006: Devil Rays minor leaguer Delmon Young is suspended 50 games for throwing a bat at an umpire.

2007: Braves catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia makes his M.L. debut. The 14 letters in his surname makes it the longest in M.L. history.
 
May 10th:

1909: In a Blue Grass League, Fred Toney of the Winchester Hustlers pitches the longest no-hitter in the history of organized baseball. A squeeze play in the bottom of the 17th is the only run in the Hustlers 1-0 win over the Lexington Colts.

1910: In the sixth inning of the White Sox 10-3 win over the Senators, Bill Purtell becomes the first player in M.L. history to strike out twice in the same inning.

1958: The Tigers name Bill Norman as manger, replacing Jack Tighe.

1967: Hank Aaron hits an inside-the-park home run off the Phillies Jim Bunning, the only such one of his 755 career homers.

1970: The Braves Hoyt Wilhelm becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to appear in 1,000 games.

1981: The Expos Charlie Lea pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Giants.

1999: In a 12-4 win over the Mariners, the Red Sox Nomar Garciaparra becomes the first player to drive in ten runs since 1975. He hit two grand slams and added a two run homer.

2005: Tony Pena resigns as Royals manager. Bench coach Bob Schaeffer is named as his replacement.
 
May 11th:

1919: The Reds Hold Eller pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Cardinals.

1932: 14-year old Joe Schultz, Jr. appears as a pinch hitter in a Texas League game, singles, steals two bases, and scores a run.

1963: The Dodgers Sandy Koufax pitches his second career no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Giants.

1972: The Giants trade Willie Mays to the Mets for pitcher Charlie Williams and $50,000.

1977: Braves owner Ted Turner takes over as manager due to the team's 16-game losing streak. The Braves lose again, 2-1 to the Pirates. Afterward, N.L. President Chub Feeney informs him he cannot manage the team due to the rule forbidding a manager from owning a stake in a team.

1980: The Phillies Pete Rose becomes the first N.L player to complete the stolen base cycle in one inning.

1996: The Marlins Al Leiter pitches a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over the Rockies.

1998: With 13 strikeouts against the Diamondbacks, the Cubs Kerry Wood sets a M.L. record with 33 strikeouts in two consecutive games.

2000: It takes four hours and 22 minutes for the Brewers to beat the Cubs 14-8, a new N.L. record for a nine inning game.

2003: The Marlins fire manager Jeff Torborg and replace him with Jack McKeon.
 
May 12th:

1910: The A's Chief Bender pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Cleveland Naps. The home plate umpire was Bill Dinneen, who pitched a no-hitter himself for the Boston Pilgrims against the White Sox in 1905. Dinneen is the only one in M.L. history to pitch a no-hitter and call one as an umpire.

1915: The White Sox Fred Faber throws only 67 pitches in a 4-1 complete game win over the Senators. The threw only three pitches to retire the side in the third and fifth innings.

1925: Hall of Famer Yogi Berra is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1941: After being named as the Bees for five seasons, the Boston N.L. teams names itself as the Braves again.

1955: The Cubs Sam "Toothpick" Jones pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Pirates.

1956: The Dodgers Carl Erskine pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Giants. It was his second career no-hitter.

1966: The Cardinals, in 12 innings, defeat the Braves 4-3 in the first game at Busch Stadium. Lou Brock singled in the winning run.

1970: The Cubs Ernie Banks hits his 500th career home run.

1978: Yankee outfielders Reggie Jackson and Mickey Rivers collide in the outfield, resulting in an inside-the-park home run for Amos Otis that ends the game and give the Royals the win.

1985: The Brewers/Indians game in Cleveland is rained out, ending a M.L. record string of 458 games played to start the season before the first postponement.

2001: Despite issuing nine walks, the Marlins A.J. Burnett pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Padres.

2008: Buster Posey plays all nine positions for Florida State University in a 10-0 win over Savannah State.

2013: The Cubs and Anthony Rizzo agree to a seven year deal worth $41 million.
 
May 13th:

1929: The Yankees/Indians game in Cleveland is the first in M.L. history to have both teams wearing numbers on their uniforms.

1942: In a 6-5 win over the Cubs, the Braves Jim Tobin becomes the first modern-era pitcher to hit three home runs, The only other one to do so was Guy Hecker for Louisville in 1886.

1947: As teammate Jackie Robinson was getting taunts and racial slurs from the crowd in Cincinnati, Pee Wee Reese starts to talk with him, then places his arm around him. Reese's gesture silences the Crosley Field crowd.

1958: Stan Musial records his 3,000th career hit.

1985: A day before he turns 43 years old, the Reds Tony Perez becomes the oldest player to hit a grand slam in M.L. history, helping Cincinnati to a 7-3 win over the Phillies.

1993: George Brett hits his 300th career home run. He joins Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Carl Yastrzemski, Willie Mays, and Al Kaline as the only players to collect 300 home runs and 3,000 hits.

2002: Jose Canseco announces his retirement.

2010: The Royals fire manager Trey Hillman and replace him with Ned Yost.
 
May 14th:

1883: The Quakers, later known as the Phillies, win their first game, defeating the Chicago White Stockings (later known as the Cubs) 12-0.

1920: Walter Johnson wins his 300th game.

1942: Hall of Famer Tony Perez is born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba.

1967: Mickey Mantle hits his 500th career home run.

1972: After 21 seasons with the Giants, Willie Mays makes his return to New York. He hits the game winning home run helping the Mets defeat his former Giants team 5-4.

1977: The Royals Jim Colborn pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Rangers.

1988: The Cardinals Jose Oquendo becomes the first non-pitcher to record a decision in M.L. history. He gets the loss as the Cardinals fall to the Braves 7-5 in 19 innings.

1996: The Yankees Dwight Gooden pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Mariners.
 
May 15th:

1901: The Washington Senators defeat the Boston Americans 4-0 in the first shutout in A.L. history.

1912: After being heckled, Ty Cobb jumps into the stands and beats up a handicapped fan. Otto Blotz only had one hand and couldn't defend himself against Cobb.

1918: The Senators Walter Johnson pitches all 18 innings in a 1-0 win over the White Sox. Larry Williams also pitched a complete game for the Sox.

1941: Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak begins.

1944: The Reds Clyde Shoun pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Braves.

1952: The Tigers Virgil Trucks pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Senators.

1960: In his first game since being traded from the Phillies, the Cubs Don Cardwell pitches a no-hitter against the Cardinals.

1967: 2015 Hall of Fame inductee John Smoltz is born in Detroit, Michigan.

1973: Nolan Ryan pitches a no-hitter against the Royals, the first of seven he'd throw in his career.

1981: The Indians Len Barker pitches a perfect game in a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays.

1989: The Blue Jays fire manager Jimy Williams and replace him with Cito Gaston.

1998: The Marlins trade Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Jim Eisenreich, Charles Johnson, and Maunel Barrios to the Dodgers for Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile.

2002: The Royals name Astros bench coach Tony Pena manager.

2008: The Brewers and Ryan Braun agree to an eight year deal worth $45 million.
 
May 16th:

1912: Ty Cobb is suspended after beating up a handicapped fan who had been heckling him the prior day.

1917: The Browns Bob Groom pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the White Sox.

1932: Lefty Grove pitches the Yankees fourth straight shutout in an 8-0 win over the Indians.

1965: Pitching 3.2 innings relief, Jim Palmer gets his first M.L. win in the Orioles 7-5 win over the Yankees.

2000: At Wrigley Field, a fan steals the hat of Dodgers catcher Chad Kreuter and hits him in the head. That starts a fight in the stands that includes several Dodgers, including coaches John Shelby and Rick Dempsey. Several fans are arrested and the game is delayed ten minutes due to garbage on the field.

2011: Drayton McLane sells the Astors for $685 million to a group led by Jim Crane.
 
May 17th:

1925: Tris Speaker collects his 3,000th hit.

1939: Princeton defeats Columbia 2-1 in the first televised baseball game. The game is televised on W2XBS, an experimental station in New York.

1945: For the fourth straight day, every A.L. game is rained out.

1963: The Colt .45s Don Nottebart pitches a no-hitter in a 4-1 win over the Phillies.

1970: Hank Aaron collects his 3,000th hit, the ninth player to do so and the first with 500 home run as well.

1971: After he was released by the Twins and Braves earlier in the season, Luis Tiant signs a free agent deal with the Red Sox.

1979: In the Phillies 23-22 win at Wrigley Field over the Cubs, the two teams tie a M.L. record by combining for eleven home runs.

1985: The Rangers fire manager Doug Rader, replacing him with third base coach Bobby Valentine.

1998: The Yankees David Wells pitches a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Twins.

2000: After being released by the Mets for not hustling, Rickey Henderson signs with the Mariners.
 
May 18th:

1912: The Tigers field a team of amateurs to avoid a $5,000 fine due to the team's refusal to play the A's in support of suspended teammate Ty Cobb. St. Joseph's College pitcher Allen Travers takes the mound for the Tigers. He pitches a complete game, but gives up 24 runs, 14 earned, 26 hits, seven walks, and records one strikeout as the A's win 24-2.

1929: In a doubleheader, the Phillies and Dodgers combine for a M.L. record 50 runs. The Dodgers won the first game 20-16 with the Phillies taking the nightcap 8-6.

1937: Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson is born in Little Rock, Arkansas.

1946: Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson in born in Wyncote, Pennsylvania.

1969: During the third inning of an 8-2 loss to the Tigers, the Twins Cesar Tovar and Rod Carew set a M.L. record by combining for five stolen bases. Tovar stole third and home with Carew taking second, third, and home.

1988: The A's Dave Stewart commits his 12th balk of the season, setting a M.L. record.

2000: Mark McGwire hits his 539th career home run, passing Mickey Mantle for eighth on the all time list.

2004: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson pitches a perfect game in a 2-0 win over the Braves.

2012: The Cubs Kerry Wood ends his career by facing one batter, then leaving the game and into an embrace from his six year old son.
 
May 19th:

1933: Two brothers homer in the same game for the opposite teams for the first time in M.L. history. Red Sox catcher Rick Ferrell homered off his brother Wes, who later hit a home run of his own for the Indians.

1941: Lefty Grove wins his 20th straight game at Fenway Park, setting a M.L. record for home-park winning streak.

1962: Stan Musial sets a N.L. record with his 3,431st career hit.

1972: The Reds trade Bernie Carbo to the Cardinals for Joe Hague. The trade is made necessary when Carbo, who was holding out, became physical with Reds GM Bob Howsam during a negotiating session.

1979: The M.L. umpires return after a six week strike.

1993: The Mets replace manager Jeff Torborg with Dallas Green.

1998: After giving up a three run homer to the Yankees Bernie Williams in the eighth inning, the Orioles Armando Benitez then hits Tino Martinez, starting a major bench-clearing brawl. Graeme Lloyd ran in from the Yankees bullpen to punch Benitez. Darryl Strawberry ended up with a being bloodied after Alan Mills punches hin for going after Benitez in the dugout,

2002: The Cubs Fred McGriff homers at Milwaukee's Miller Park, tying him with Ellis Burks for the M.L. record of homering in 40 different ballparks.

2008: The Red Sox Jon Lester pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Rays.
 
May 20th:

1919: As a Red Sox pitcher, Babe Ruth hits the first of his 16 career grand slams.

1947: In a 4-3 Pirates win over the Braves, the two teams combine for 22 hits with all of them singles.
