1930: In the Phillies 5-1 loss to the Braves, Grover Cleveland Alexander, in relief, makes the final appearance of his career. He finishes his career with 373 wins.
1951: A home run off Warren Spahn marks the first career hit for Willie Mays.
1957: Owners Walter O'Malley of the Dodgers and Horace Stoneman of the Giants are given permission by the NL to negotiate with west coast cities.
1968: The AL votes to divide into two divisions and reduce its schedule to 156 games. They will later reconsider the schedule.
1995: In the White Sox 14-12 win over the Tigers, the two teams combine for a ML record 12 home runs.
2001: The Marlins fire manager John Boles. Tony Perez takes over on an interim basis.
2003: Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa, and Gary Sheffield make the Braves only the second team to hit three straight home runs to start a game. The Padres in 1987 were the other.
2004: Mariano Rivera records his 300th save in the Yankees 7-5 win over the Devil Rays.
2006: Barry Bonds hits his 715th home run, passing Babe Ruth for second on the all time list.

1922: The Supreme Court rules baseball is a sport and not a business. The ruling exempts ML teams from antitrust laws and interstate commerce rules.
1962: Buck O'Neill becomes the first black coach in baseball history when he accepts a job with the Cubs.
1976: In a pitching matchup featuring brothers, Joe Niekro and the Astros defeat Phil and the Braves 4-1. Joe would also hit the only home run in his 22 year career off his older brother.
1981: The Mets trade Jeff Reardon and Dan Norman to the Expos for Ellis Valentine.
1989: In a tearful press conference, Mike Schmidt announces his retirement.
1990: In the sixth inning of the A's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays, Rickey Henderson steals his 893rd stolen base, breaking Lou Brock's all time record.
1990: The Mets fire manager Davey Johnson and replace him with third base coach Bud Harrelson.
1994: The Braves trade Deion Sanders to the Reds for Roberto Kelly and minor league pitcher Roger Etheridge.
2003: The Red Sox trade third baseman Shea Hillenbrand to the Diamondbacks for pitcher Byun-Huyn Kim.
2010: In his ML debut, Buster Posey goes 3-4 with three RBIs in the Giants 12-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
2010: After hitting a walk off grand slam to help the Angels beat the Mariners 9-7, Kendry Morales breaks his ankle by jumping on home plate in celebration. He would miss the rest of the season.
2010: The Phillies Roy Halladay pitches the 20th perfect game in ML history in a 1-0 win over the Marlins.
