1982: The Rangers name Doug Rader manager.

1982: The N.L. owners block the re-election of Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.

2000: The Phillies name Larry Bowa manager.

2000: The Dodgers name bench coach Jim Tracy as their new manager.

2001: Game 5 of the World Series becomes the first ever M.L. game played in November. With two out in the ninth, Scott Brosius hits a game tying home run, then Alfonso Soriano singles in Chuck Knoblauch in the 12th to give the Yankees a 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

2001: The Astros name Jimy Williams manager.

2004: The Diamondbacks name Wally Backman manager.

2006: The Seibu Lions of the Japanese League release Daisuke Matsuzaka from his contract, making him available for M.L. teams to sign him.

2007: The Dodgers name Joe Torre manager.

2010: The Giants defeat the Rangers 3-1 in Game 5 to win their first World Series since 1954, when the team was in New York.

1988: The White Sox name Jeff Torborg manager.

1992: The Reds trade Paul O'Neill and minor leaguer Joe DeBerry to the Yankees for Roberto Kelly.

1997: By unanimous vote, the Red Sox Nomar Garciaparra is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

1999: The Rangers trade Juan Gonzalez, Danny Patterson, and Greg Zaun to the Tigers for Justin Thompson, Alan Webb, Francisco Cordero, Frank Catalanotto, Gabe Kapler, and Bill Haselman.

2001: In a Game 6 win for force a deciding Game 7 against the Yankees, the Diamondbacks set a new World Series record with 21 hits.

1935: Former NFL star with the Green Bay Packers Cal Hubbard becomes an A.L. umpire. He would become the only person to be enshrined in both the Baseball and Pro Football Hall of Fames.

1950: Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander dies at age 63.

1955: Cy Young dies at age 88.

1959: Ernie Banks wins his second straight N.L. MVP award.

1965: Al Lopez resigns as White Sox manager.

1980: Japan's all time home run leader Sadaharu Oh retires from professional baseball. He hit 868 home runs in his 22-year career.

1997: The Phillies Scott Rolen is named N.L. Rookie of the Year.

2001: In Game 7, the Diamondbacks score two runs in the ninth, the second on a walk-off RBI single by Luis Gonzalez to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 win over the Yankees and their first World Series title. Arizona pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling share the series MVP award.

2002: The Blue Jays Eric Hinske and the Rockies Jason Jennings are named Rookies of the Year.

2004: Two new managers in the N.L. East are hired. The Phillies hire Charlie Manuel while the Mets named Willie Randolph.

2009: The Yankees defeat the Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

2010: Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson dies at age 76.

1936: The Dodgers name Burleigh Grimes as their new manager, replacing the fired Casey Stengel.

1976: The Orioles Jim Palmer wins the A.L. Cy Young for the second straight year.

1996: Derek Jeter is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

1997: A day after being named A.L. manager of the Year, Davey Johnson resigns as the Orioles manager. The relationship between him and owner Peter Angelos had been souring throughout the year.

2007: The Pirates name John Russell manager.

2008: Greg Maddux extends his own M.L. record with his 18th Gold Glove Award.

2013: The Mariners name Lloyd McClendon manager.

1887: Hall of Famer Walter Johnson is born in Humboldt, Kansas.

1950: Branch Rickey signs a five year deal to be the Pirates executive vice president and general manager.

1969: For the first time, the Cy Young voting ends in a tie as the Tigers Denny McLain and the Orioles Mike Cuellar share the honor for the A.L.

1984: The Tigers Willie Hernandez joins Rollie Fingers as the only reliever to win the MVP and Cy Young awards in the same season.

1997: The Giants Dusty Baker is named N.L. Manager of the Year.

2000: The Mariners Kazuhiro Sasaki is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

2002: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson wins his fifth Cy Young Award.

2007: In a 25-2 vote by the GM's, limited use of instant replay is approved. The new system would be used only for home runs call in doubt due to possible fan interference, whether or not the ball cleared the fence, or those near or over the foul pole.

2007: Greg Maddux wins his 17th Gold Glove Award, breaking the record he held with Jim Kaat and Brooks Robinson.
 
November 7th:

1928: The Braves send player/manager Rogers Hornsby to the Cubs for pitchers Percy Jones, Harry Seibold, and Bruce Cunningham, outfielder Fred Maguire, and catcher Lou Legett along with $200,000.

1963: The Yankees Elston Howard is named A.L. MVP.

1964: The Braves receive permission to move from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season.

1972: Johnny Bench is named N.L. MVP.

1978: The Red Sox Jim Rice is named A.L. MVP.

1990: The Indians Sandy Alomar Jr. is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

1995: Major League Baseball reaches a new agreement with Fox to broadcast Saturday afternoon games.

1997: The expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays name Larry Rothschild as their first manager.

1931: Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog is born in New Athens, Illinois.

1953: In a 7-2 vote, The Supreme Court reaffirms its earlier position that baseball is a sport, not a business. The decision exempts baseball from anti-trusts laws.

1982: By unanimous vote, the Brewers Robin Yount is named A.L. MVP.

2000: The Giants Dusty Baker is named N.L. Manager of the Year.

2002: Dusty Baker signs a four year deal to become the Cubs manager.

2004: The Astros Roger Clemens wins his seventh Cy Young Award. At age 42, he becomes the oldest to do so.

2005: The White Sox Ozzie Guillen and the Braves Bobby Cox are named their leagues Manager of the Year.

1961: For the second straight year, Roger Maris is named A.L. MVP.

1967: Triple crown winner Carl Yastrzemski is named A.L. MVP.

1983: Cal Ripken Jr. is named A.L. MVP.

1988: The Dodgers Kirk Gibson is named N.L. MVP.

2000: The Yankees Jason Giambi wins the A.L. MVP.

2001: Roger Clemens wins the A.L. Cy Young, becoming the first to win the award six times.

2002: The Mariners name Bob Melvin manager.

2004: Barry Bonds wins his record seventh MVP award, becoming the first to win it four straight years.

2005: The owners and players agree to strengthen penalties for a failed drug test for steriods. The penalties become a 50 game suspension for a first offense (was 10 days), 100 for a second (was 30 days), and a lifetime ban for a third offense (was 60 days). The new agreement also starts testing for amphetamines, with mandatory testing for a first offense, 25-game suspension for a season, and 80 games for a third.

2005: Alex Rodriguez is named A.L. MVP.

2005: The Devil Rays name Joe Maddon manager.

2006: Six weeks after being fired by the Marlins, Joe Girardi is named N.L. Manager of the Year. The Tigers Jim Leyland wins it in the A.L.

2007: The Padres Jake Peavy is named N.L. Cy Young Award winner.

2010: The Giants Buster Posey wins the N.L. Rookie of the Year with the Rangers Neftali Feliz winning in the A.L.

2011: The Tigers Justin Verlander is named A.L. Cy Young Award winner.

1886: The Pittsburgh Allegehenys leave the American Association to join the National League. They became known as the Pirates in 1891.

1949: Jackie Robinson wins the N.L. MVP.

1954: Lou Boudreau is named the A's new manager.

1966: The baseball world is stunned when 30-year old Sandy Koufax announces his retirement. Koufax cites his arthritic arm and fear of permanent damage as reasons for his retirement.

1966: The Mets name Wes Westrum to replace Casey Stengel as manager.

1980: George Brett wins the A.L. MVP.

1981: The Padres name Dick Williams manager.

1981: Mike Schmidt wins the N.L. MVP for the second straight season.

1984: The Mets Dwight Gooden wins the N.L. Rookie of the Year.

1985: The Royals Bret Saberhagen and the Mets Dwight Gooden are named Cy Young Award winners.

1986: Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens is named A.L. MVP.

1987: The Blue Jays George Bell and the Cubs Andre Dawson are named league MVPs. Dawson becomes the first to win the award while on a last place team.

1998: The Rangers Juan Gonzalez is named A.L. MVP.

2000: Ichrio Suzuki of the Orix Blue Waves signs a three year deal with the Mariners, becoming the first Japanese position player in M.L. history.

2002: The Rockies trade pitcher Mike Hampton and outfielder Juan Pierre to the Marlins for catcher Charles Johnson, outfielder Preston Wilson, reliever Vic Darensbourg, and prospect Pablo Ozuna. The Marlins then trade Hampton to the Braves for reliever Tim Spooneybarger and prospect Ryan Baker.

2008: The Phillies Ryan Howard is named N.L. MVP.

2008: The Cubs and pitcher Ryan Dempster agree on a four year deal worth $52 million.

2009: The Rockies Jim Tracy and the Angels Mike Scioscia are named the leagues Manager of the Year.

2009: The Giants Tim Lincecum wins the N.L. Cy Young Award for the second straight year.

2012: John Gibbons is hired by the Blue Jays as their manager for the second time.

2013: The Tigers trade Prince Fielder to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler.

1972: The Red Sox Carlton Fisk becomes the first to win the A.L. Rookie of the Year by unanimous vote.

1983: The Mets Darryl Strawberry wins the N.L. Rookie of the Year.
