1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Pilgrims 7-3 in the first World Series game ever played.

1932: Playing for the San Francisco Seals, 18 year old Joe DiMaggio makes his professional debut.

1932: In the fifth inning of the Yankees 7-5 win in Game 3 of the World Series against the Cubs, Babe Ruth does his famous "called shot".

1933: Babe Ruth makes his final pitching appearance, allowing 12 hits and five runs in the Yankees 6-5 win over the Red Sox.

1944: With a 5-2 win over the Yankees, the Browns clinch their only AL pennant in St. Louis.

1945: Hall of Famer Rod Carew is born in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone.

1955: The Cardinals Bill Virdon and the Indians Herb Score are named by Th Sporting News as their respective leagues Rookie of the Year.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season to break Babe Ruth's record.

1961: The Angels lose to the Indians 8-5 in the final game at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles.

1967: The Red Sox defeat the Twins 5-3 to win the AL pennant.

1970: The Phillies defeat the Expos 2-1 in the final game at Connie Mack Stadium.

1973: A day after the end of the regular season, the Mets defeat the Cubs in a makeup game to clinch the NL East.

1974: The Mets Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in ML history to strike out 200 batters in seven straight seasons.

1975: The Expos fire manager Gene March and replac him with Karl Kuehl, who had been managing the Memphis Blues minor league team.

1980: The Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.

1984: Peter Uberroth becomes the sixth commissioner of baseball.

1984: Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston dies at age 72.

1995: The Yankees and Rockies become th first Wild Card winners in ML history.

2004: With two hits, Ichiro Suzuki breaks George Sisler's record of 257 hits set back in 1920.

2006: The Twins Joe Mauer becomes the first AL catcher to win a batting title.

2007: The Rockies defeat the Padres 9-8 in a one game playoff for the NL Wild Card. The game ends in the 13th inning when Matt Holliday slides in at home on a close play at the plate.

2009: Tony La Russa manages his 4,770th game, passing John McGraw of second on the all time list.

1909: Ty Cobb becomes the first player in ML history to win the triple crown.

1951: Hall of Famer Dave Winfield is born in St. Paul, Minnesota.

1951: "The shot heard around the world": Bobby Thompson hits a three run home run to give the Giants a 5-4 win over the Dodgers in the final game of a best of three playoff to win the NL pennant.

1954: Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley is born in Oakland, California.

1962: The Dodgers beat the Giants 6-4 in the last of a best of three series for the NL pennant.

1974: The Indians hire Frank Robinson, making him the first black manager in ML history.

1976: With the Brewers, Hank Aaron singles off the Tigers Dave Roberts in his final ML at bat.

1982: The Brewers defeat the Orioles 10-2 to win the AL East. It ended Earl Weaver's 15 year run as the Orioles manager.

1993: With a 12-1 loss to the Dodgers, the 103-win Giants lose the NL West to the Braves, who beat the Rockies for the 104th win and the division title.

1995: The Braves, Reds, Yankees, and Indians record wins on the first day of divisional series games in ML history.

1999: In the final game at the Astrodome, the Astros defeat the Dodgers 9-4 to win the NL Central title.

2000: In the third inning of Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves, Cardinals pitcher Rick Ankiel sets a modern ML record with five wild pitches.

2001: Barry Bonds walks three times and breaks Babe Ruth's record of 170 set in 1923.

2004: The Expos lose to the Mets 8-1 at Shea Stadium in their last game before moving to Washington and becoming the Nationals.

2005: Two managers, the Tigers Alan Trammel and the Dodgers Jim Tracy, are fired by their teams.

2006: The Marlins hire Braves third base coach Fredi Gonzalez as their new manager.

2009: The Dodgers clinch the NL West with a 5-0 win over the Wild Card Rockies.

2010: The Giants clinch the NL West with a 3-0 victory over the Padres. With the Padres loss and an 8-7 win over the Phillies, the Braves take the Wild Card.

2010: With the Yankees loss to the Red Sox and a victory over the Royals, the Rays win the AL East.

2012: The A's beat the Rangers 12-5 to win the AL West. The loss sent the Rangers to the AL Wild Card Game.
 
October 4th:

1906: The Cubs beat the Pirates 4-0 for their 116th game of the season, finishing with a .763 winning percentage.

1924: Calvin Coolidge becomes the first US President to attend a World Series opener. He watches as the Giants defeat the Senators 4-3 in 12 innings.

1944: Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa is born in Tampa, Florida.

1948: The Indians defeat the Red Sox 8-3 in a one game playoff for the AL pennant.

1955: The Dodgers beat the Yankees 2-0 to win their first World Series title.

1959: Fred Haney resigns as Braves manager. He is replaced by Charlie Dressen.

1964: The Giants fire manager Alvin Dark and replace him with coach Herman Franks.

1981: The Reds beat the Braves 3-0 to finish with a record of 66-42, the best in th NL for the strike shortened season, but don't qualify for the postseason. In the split season format, the Dodgers had a better record before the strike and The Astros after. Those two teams played in a divisional series format.

1987: The Tigers win the AL East with a 1-0 victory over the Blue Jays. Toronto lost their last seven games.

1999: The Mets defeat the Reds 5-0 in a one game playoff for the NL Wild Card.

2001: Barry Bonds hits his 70th home run of the season to tie Mark McGwire's record.

2001: Rickey Henderson scores his 2,246th career run, breaking Ty Cobb's ML record.

2002: Ray Durham and Scott Hatteberg make the A's the first team to start a postseason game with back to back home runs.

2003: The Marlins Jeff Conine throws out J.T Snow at the plate, who runs over catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who hangs on to the ball, the Marlins beat the Giants 7-6 to take the NLDS in four games.

2005: The Tigers name Jim Leyland manager.

2006: The Rangers fire manager Buck Showalter.

2008: The Dodgers beat the Cubs 3-1 to finish a NLDS sweep.

2010: The Pirates fire manager John Russell. The Mets always fired Jerry Manuel.

2010: The Diamondbacks name interim manager Kirk Gibson to th full time job.

2012: After one season and a 69-93 record, the Red Sox fire manager Bobby Valentine.

2014: In the longest game in postseason history, the Giants defeat the Nationals 2-1 on a Brandon Belt home run in the top of the 18th inning. The games takes six hours and 23 minutes to play.
 
October 5th:

1888: James Galvin of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys becomes the first pitcher in baseball history to win 300 games.

1918: Eddie Grant becomes the first major leaguer to be killed in action during World War I.

1942: The Cardinals defeat the Yankees 2-1 to win the World Series in five games.

1953: Billy Martin's walk-off single gives the Yankees a 4-3 win in in Game 6 against the Dodgers to win their fifth straight World Series title.

1963: Mickey Mantle ties Babe Ruth's record with his 15th World Series home run. However, the Dodgers finish a sweep of the Yankees.

2001: The Mariners win their 115th win of the season, breaking the Yankees 1998 AL record.

2001: In an 11-10 loss to the Dodgers, the Giants Barry Bonds hits his 71st home run, breaking Mark McGwire's single season record. He hit his second of the night, #72, later in the Game.

2001: The Braves beat the Marlins 20-3 to win the NL East and become the first team in professional sports to win ten straight division titles.

2002: The Angels defeat the Yankees 9-5 to win the ALDS in four games, their first postseason series win.

2009: The Indians fire manager Eric Wedge.

2011: During the fifth inning of Game 4 in the NLDS, a squirrel run in front of Cardinals hitter Skip Schumaker just as the Phillies Roy Oswald delivers a pitch. Home plate umpire Angel Hernandez calls a ball. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel contended "no pitch" should have been called. Cardinal fans referred to the rodent as the "rally squirrel".
 
October 6th:

1908: The Tigers clinch the AL pennant with a 7-0 win over the White Sox.

1923: Braves shortstop Erin Padgett turns the first triple play in NL history.

1926: In the Yankees 10-5 win in Game 4 against the Yankees, Babe Ruth becomes the first player in World Series history to hit three home runs in a game.

1931: Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews is a born in Texarkana, Texas.

1941: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 3-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1945: Trying to promote his tavern, William Sainis buy a ticket to Game 4 of the World Series in Wrigley Field between the Tigers and Cubs for him and his billy goat. When he is asked to leave by the ushers, Sainis places a "curse" on the Cubs, saying they will never win another World Series. Since then, the Cubs have not appeared in a World Series.

1959: The largest crowd to watch a baseball game, 92,706 fans, watch the White Sox defeat the Dodgers 1-0 in Game 5 of the World Series.

1963: The Dodgers defeat the Yankees 2-1 to finish a World Series sweep.

1985: Phil Niekro records his 300th win in the Yankees 8-0 victory over the Blue Jays.

1991: The Mets David Cone ties the NL record with 19 strikeouts in a 7-0 win over the Phillies.

1997: The Indians defeat the Yankees 4-3 in the fifth and deciding game of the ALDS.

2000: CEO John Harrington puts the Red Sox up for sale. Since the death of Jean Yawkey in 1992, the team had been owned by the Jean R. Yawkey Trust.

2001: A 1-0 win over the Rangers marks the 116th victory of the season for the Mariners, tying the ML record set by the 1906 Cubs.

2001: Cal Ripken Jr plays in his final ML game.

2001: Lenny Harris records his 151st career pinch-hit, breaking Manny Mota's ML record.

2003: The Red Sox defeat the A's 5-4 in Game 5 of the ALDS, rallying from 0-2 down to win the series.

2006: The A's defeat the Twins 8-3 to finish an ALDS sweep.

2007: The Diamondbacks defeat the Cubs 5-1 to finish a NLDS sweep. In the other NLDS, the Rockies also finish a sweep with a 2-1 win over the Phillies.

2009: In the bottom of the 12th, Alex Casilla hits a walk-off single to give the Twins a 6-5 win over the Tigers in a one game playoff for the AL Central title.

2010: The Phillies Roy Halliday pitches the second no-hitter in postseason history in a 1-0 win over the Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS. The other no-hitter in postseason history was the perfect game by Don Larsen in Game 6 of the 1956 World Series.

2011: The White Sox name Robin Ventura manager.

2012: Jim Tracy resigns as Rockies manager.

2012: The Cardinals defeat the Braves 6-3 in the first NL Wild Card Game. The contest was marred by a bogus infield fly rule call by idiot umpire Sam Holbrook.

2012: The Orioles defeat the Rangers 5-1 in the first AL Wild Card Game.

2012: The Indians name Terry Francona manager.
 
October 7th:

1904: Jack Chesbro records his 41st victory of the season, considered a moder ML record, in the New York Highlanders 3-2 win over Boston.

1925: Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson dies of tuberculosis at age 45. His death comes prior to Game 1 of the World Series between the Pirates and Senators. Both teams wear black armbands in his memory.

1935: In the bottom of the ninth in Game 6, Goose Goslin singles home Mickey Cochrane to give the Tigers a 4-3 win over the Cubs and their first World Series title.

1950: The Yankees defeat the Phillies 5-2 to finish a World Series sweep.

1952: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 4-2 to win their fourth straight World Series title.

1969: The Cardinals trade Curt Flood, Byron Browne, Joe Hoerner, and Tim McCarver to the Cardinals for Dick Allen, Jerry Johnson, and Cookie Rojas. Flood would refuse to report to the Phillies and begin his case against baseball's reserve clause.

1978: Bill Russell's RBI single in the 10th inning of Game 4 of the NLCS gives the Dodgers a 4-3 win over the Phillies and their second straight NL pennant.

1984: The Padres defeat the Cubs 6-3 in the decisive Game 5 of the NLCS, rally back from 2-0 down in the series.

1988: The Yankees replace manager Billy Martin with Dallas Green.

1995: The Braves defeat the Rockies 10-4 in Game 4 to win the NLDS.

2001: Rickey Henderson records his 3,000th hit.

2001: Barry Bonds finishes his record setting season with his 73rd home run of the season.

2005: The White Sox defeat the Red Sox 5-3 to finish an ALDS sweep over the defending world champions. It was the White Sox first postseason series win since the 1917 World Series.

2006: Three years after losing 119 games, the Tigers defeat the Yankees 8-3 in Game 4 to win the ALDS.

2006: The Mets defeat the Dodgers 9-5 to finish a NLDS sweep.
 
October 8th:

1908: In a makeup game made necessary due to the infamous "Merkle's Boner", the Cubs beat the Giants 4-2 to win the NL pennant.

1922: The Giants defeat the Yankees 5-3 to finish a World Series sweep.

1927: Considered perhaps the greatest team of all time, the Yankees defeat the Pirates 4-3 to finish a World Series sweep.

1939: The Yankees defeat the Reds 7-4 to finish a World Series sweep and become the first team in ML history to win four straight world championships.

1940: The Reds defeat the Tigers 2-1 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1956: In a 2-0 win in Game 5 against the Dodgers, the Yankees Don Larsen pitches the only perfect game in postseason history.

1959: The Dodgers defeat the White Sox 9-3 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1973: During the Mets 9-2 win over the Reds in Game 3 of the NLCS, the Mets Bud Harrelson takes exception to a hard slide from Pete Rose, starting a bench clearing brawl.

1977: The Dodgers defeat the Phillies 4-1 in Game 4 to win the NLCS.

1983: The Phillies defeat the Dodgers 7-2 in Game 4 to win the NLCS.

1995: Edgar Martinez hits a two run double in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Mariners to a 6-5 win over the Yankees in the deciding Game 5 of the ALDS.

2000: The Mets defeat the Giants 4-0 in Game 4 to win the NLDS.

2002: The Tigers name Alan Trammel manager.

2006: The Cardinals defeat the Padres 6-2 in Game 4 to win the NLDS.

2007: With a 6-4 win over the Yankees, the Indians advance to the ALCS for the first time since 1997.

2009: With help from an error from Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, the Dodgers score in the bottom of the ninth to win
3-2 and takes a 2-0 lead in the NLDS.
 
October 9th:

1886: Hall of Famer Rube Marquard is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

1915: Woodrow Wilson becomes the first US President to attend a World Series game. He's at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia to see the Red Sox defeat the Phillies 2-1 in Game 2.

1928: The Yankees defeat the Cardinals 7-3 to finish their second straight World Series sweep.

1934: The Cardinals defeat the Tigers 11-0 in Game 7 to win the World Series. During the game, the Cardinals Joe Medwick slides hard into Tigers third baseman Marv Owen. Tigers fans react by throwing fruit at him. For his safety, Commissioner Landis makes Medwick leave the game.

1938: The Yankees defeat the Cubs 8-3 to finish a World Series sweep and becoming the first team to win the Fall Classic three straight years.

1949: During the ninth inning of the Dodgers 10-8 loss to the Yankees in Game 5, the lights are turned on, making it the first World Series game to be played under artificial lights.

1958: The Yankees defeat the Braves 6-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series, avenging their loss to Milwaukee the prior season.

1961: The Yankees defeat the Reds 13-5 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1969: Sparky Anderson accepts an offer to become the Reds manager.

1989: The Giants defeat the Cubs 3-2 in Game 5 to win the NLCS. It is the last MLB game to be broadcasted by NBC.

1996: In the bottom of the eighth inning of ALCS Game 1 and the Orioles leading the Yankees 4-3, Derek Jeter hits a fly ball to right field. Tony Tarasco gets ready to catch the ball at the wall when 12 year old Jeffrey Maier reaches over the wall and catches the ball himself. Tarasco and Orioles manager Davey Johnson argued the call. Replays showed clear interference, but the call stood and turned the tide of the series.

2005: Ending what was at the time, the longest postseason game ever, Chris Burke's 18th inning home lifts the Astros to a 7-6 win over the Braves in Game 4 to take the NLDS.

2010: The Yankees defeat the Twins 6-2 to finish and ALDS sweep.
 
October 10th:

1920: The Indians Bill Wambsganss becomes the only player in World Series history to turn an unassisted triple play. In the Indians 8-1 win over the Robins, Elmer Smith hits the first grand slam in World Series history and Jim Bagby becomes the first pitcher to hit a home run.

1924: In the bottom of the 12 inning of Game 7 of the World Series, Giants catcher Hank Gowdy trips over his own mask trying to catch a pop foul hit by the Senators Muddy Ruel. Ruel would then double and score the winning run, giving the Senators the World Series title.

1951: The Yankees defeat the Giants 4-3 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1956: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 9-0 in the decisive Game 7 to win the World Series.

1957: In Game 7, Braves pitcher Lew Burdette pitches on two days rest and records his third victory of the series in a 5-0 win over the Yankees, giving Milwaukee the World Series title.

1968: The Tigers defeat the Cardinals in Game 7 4-1 to win the World Series. In the loss, Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson set a World Series record with 35 strikeouts.

1970: In the first World Series game played on artificial turf, the Orioles defeat the Reds in Game 1 at Cincinnati 4-3.

1973: The Mets defeat the Reds 7-2 in the deciding Game 5 of the NLCS.

1982: With a Game 5 win over the Angels in the ALCS, the Brewers become the first team to win a best of five series after losing the firs two games.

1993: The White Sox Frank Thomas is named AL MVP.

2009: The Dodgers defeat the Cardinals 5-1 to finish a NLDS sweep.

2010: The Phillies defeat the Reds 2-0 to finish a NLDS sweep.

2011: In Game 2 of the ALCS, the Rangers Nelson Cruz hits the first walk-off grand slam in postseason history, leading Texas to a 7-3 win over the Tigers.
 
October 11th:

1911: The Tigers Ty Cobb and the Cubs Frank Schulte win the first league MVP awards. They receive a car from Detroit based Chalmers Automotive for winning the award.

1929: The Cubs defeat the A's 3-1 in Game 3, becoming the first NL team to win a World Series game since the Cardinals in Game 7 of the 1926 Fall Classic.

1948: The Indians defeat the Braves 4-3 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1967: Gil Hodges signs a three year deal to manage the Mets.

1968: The Giants name Clyde King manager.

1972: The Reds defeat the 4-3 in the deciding Game 5 of the NLCS.

1981: The Expos defeat the Phillies 3-0 to win the NL East in a divisional playoff format made necessary by the strike.

1999: The Red Sox defeat the Indians in the deciding Game 5 of ALDS.

2002: The Rangers name Buck Showalter manager.

2004: The Astros defeat the Braves 12-3 in the deciding Game 5 of the NLDS, winning a postseason series for the first time in their 43 year history.

2005: The Pirates name Jim Tracy manager.

2006: Yankees pitcher Corey Lidle and his flight instructor Tyler Stanger are killed when the plane he is piloting crashes into a New York high rise apartment.

2009: After trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning, the Angels rally to defeat the Red Sox 7-6 to finish and ALDS sweep.

2009: The Yankees defeat the Twins 4-1 to finish an ALDS sweep. It was the last baseball game to be played at the Metrodome.

2010: The Giants defeat the Braves 3-2 in Game 4 to win the NLDS. It was the last game for Bobby Cox, who retired after 29 years as Braves manager.

1907: The Cubs defeat the Tigers 2-0, becoming the first team to sweep the World Series.

1916: The Red Sox defeat the Robins 4-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1920: The Indians defeat the Robins 3-0 to win the best of nine World Series in seven games.

1948: The Yankees name Casey Stengel manager.

1954: The AL owners approve the sale of the A's to Chicago businessman Arnold Johnson, who will move the team to Kansas City the next season.

1967: Bob Gibson leads the Cardinals to a 7-2 win over the Red Sox, taking the World Series title.

1972: The A's defeat the Tigers 2-1 in the deciding Game 5 of the ALCS, winning their first AL pennant since 1931.

1982: In the Brewers 10-0 win over the Cardinals in Game 1, Paul Molitor becomes the first player in World Series history to collect five hits in a game.

1986: A strike away from elimination, the Red Sox Dave Henderson hits a two run homer off the Angels' Donnie Moore to give Boston a 6-5 lead. The Angels tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but a Henderson sac fly in the 11th gives Boston the win.

2001: Tom Kelly retires after 15 years as manager of the Twins.

2009: The Phillies defeat the Rockies 5-4 in Game 4 to win the NLDS.

2010: Led by Cliff Lee's complete game, the Rangers defeat the Rays 5-1 in the deciding Game 5 to win the ALDS.

2012: The Cardinals defeat the Nationals in Game 5 to win the NLDS.

2013: For the first time in postseason history, two games on the same day end in 1-0 scores. The Tigers defeat the Red Sox by that 1-0 score in Game 1 of the ALCS with the Cardinals winning by that same tally in Game 2 of the NLCS against the Dodgers.
 
October 13th:

1903: In the eighth game, the Boston Pilgrims defeat the Pirates 3-0 to win the first World Series.

1914: The Braves complete one of the most surprising World Series results ever, beating the heavily favored A's 3-1 to finish the sweep. The "Miracle Braves", as they became known, were in last place in mid-July and won the pennant by ten and a half games.

1921: The Giants defeat the Yankees 1-0 in Game 8 to win the World Series.

1960: In one of the most memorable moments in baseball history, Bill Mazeroski hits a walk-off home run to give the Pirates a 10-9 win over the Yankees in the seventh and deciding game of the World Series.

1970: In the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 3, the Orioles Wayne Granger becomes the first pitcher in World Series history to hit a grand slam, helping Baltimore to a 9-3 win over the Reds.

1971: The Pirates defeat the Orioles 4-3 in the first ever World Series game played at night.

1993: The Phillies defeat the Braves 6-3 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.
 
October 14th:

1905: The Giants defeat the A's 2-0 in Game 5 to win the World Series. It is the only one in series history in which every game ended in a shutout.

1906: The White Sox defeat the Cubs 8-3 to finish their World Series upset. The Cubs had won a record 116 games in the regular season.

1908: The Cubs defeat the Tigers in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1972: In Game 1, the A's Gene Tenace becomes the first player to hit two home runs in his first two World Series at bats, leading Oakland to a 3-2 win over the Reds.

1976: In the deciding Game 5 of the ALCS, Chris Chambliss hits a walk-off home run, giving the Yankees a 7-6 win over the Royals and the AL pennant.

1983: In the Orioles 3-2 win in Game 3 over the Phillies and pitching in relief, Jim Palmer becomes the first player in history to win a World Series game in three different decades.

1984: The Tigers defeat the Padres 5-4 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1985: Ozzie Smith hits a walk-off home run to lift the Cardinals to a Game 5 win over the Dodgers in the NLCS.

1992: The Blue Jays defeat the A's in Game 6 to win the ALCS.

1992: Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the NLCS, Francisco Cabrera hits a two run single to lift the Braves to a dramatic 3-2 win over the Pirates. Sid Bream slides in just ahead of the tag at home to win the Braves second straight NL pennant.

1997: The Marlins defeat the Braves 7-4 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.

2002: The Angels defeat the Twins 13-5 in Game 5 to win the ALCS.

2003: With a three run lead and five outs away from their first NL pennant since 1945, the Cubs give up eight runs in the eighth inning and lose Game 6 of the NLCS to the Marlins 8-3, forcing a Game 7. The most infamous moment for the Cubs came when fan Steve Bartman reaches over to try and catch a foul ball that might have been caught by Moises Alou for the second out.

2006: Magglio Ordonez hits a walk-off three run homer to give the Tigers a 6-3 win over the A's and a four game sweep in the ALCS.

2010: The Braves name Fredi Gonzalez as manager, replacing future Hall of Famer Bobby Cox.

1923: The Yankees defeat the Giants 6-4 in Game 6 to win their first World Series title.

1925: The Pirates defeat the Senators 9-7 in Game 7 to win the World Series. They become the first team to do so after trailing three games to one in the series.

1946: The Cardinals defeat the Red Sox 4-3 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1964: The Cardinals defeat the Yankees 7-5 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1969: During the Orioles 2-1, ten inning loss to the Mets in Game 4, Earl Weaver becomes the first manager to be ejected from a game in World Series history.

1970: The Orioles defeat the Reds in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1972: Jackie Robinson makes his final appearance at a ballpark before Game 2 of the World Series, nine days before his death. He urges baseball to hire a black manager, which is not done until the Indians hire Frank Robinson in 1975.

1981: The Yankees defeat the A's 4-0 to finish an ALCS sweep.

1986: The Mets defeat the Astros in 16 innings 7-6 in Game 6 to win the NLCS. At the time, the four hour and 42 minute game was the longest in postseason history.

1986: After trailing three games to one, the Red Sox defeat the Angels 8-1 in Game 7 to win the ALCS.

1988: In his only World Series at bat, an injured Kirk Gibson hits a home run in the ninth inning of Game 1 off Dennis Eckersley to defeat the A's 5-4. It became the first game in World Series history to be decided on a home run in a come from behind win in the ninth inning.

1997: An 11th inning home run by Tony Fernandez lifts the Indians to a 1-0 win in Game 6 over the Orioles and the AL pennant.

2001: The Yankees defeat the A's 5-3 in Game 5 to win the ALDS, becoming the first team to win a best of five series after losing the first two games at home.

2001: The Diamondbacks defeat the Cardinals 2-1 in Game 5 to win the NLDS.

2008: The Phillies defeat the Dodgers 5-1 in Game 5 to win the NLCS.

2011: The Rangers defeat the Tigers 15-5 in Game 6 to win the ALCS.

2000: The Mets defeat the Cardinals 7-0 in Game 5 to win the NLCS.

2003: Aaron Boone's walk-off homer in the 11th inning of Game 7 of the ALCS gives the Yankees a 6-5 win and the pennant.

2005: The White Sox defeat the Angels in Game 5 of the ALCS to win their first pennant in 46 years.

2006: Lou Piniella signs a three year deal to manage the Cubs.

2006: The A's fire manager Ken Macha.

2008: After trailing 7-0 in Game 5 of the ALCS, the Red Sox rally to defeat the Rays 8-7 and force a sixth game.
 
October 17th:

1960: The National League owners vote to admit new expansion teams in New York and Houston.

1964: After their World Series loss to the Cardinals, the Yankees fire Yogi Berra as manager.

1967: The Red Sox Dick Williams is named AL Manager of the Year.

1971: The Pirates defeat the Orioles in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1978: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 7-2 in Game 6 to win their second straight World Series title.

1979: After trailing three games to one, the Pirates defeat the Orioles 4-1 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1985: The Yankees fire manager Billy Martin for the fourth time and replace him with Lou Piniella.

1987: In the first World Series game played indoors, the Twins defeat the Cardinals 10-1 in Game 1 at the Metrodome.

1989: About a half-hour before the scheduled start of Game 3 of the World Series between the A's and Giants, a major earthquake strikes the San Francisco Bay Area. The game is postponed by Commissioner Fay Vincent and Candlestick Park is evacuated.

2000: The Yankees defeat the Mariners 9-7 to win the AL pennant.

1950: At 87 years old, Connie Mack retires after 50 years as manager of the A's. During his managerial career, he posted a record of 3,731-3,948.

1960: Five days after losing to the Pirates in the World Series, the Yankees fire manager Casey Stengel.

1967: The AL owners vote to allow a new expansion franchise in Kansas City after owner Charley Finley moves the A's to Oakland. The owners also vote for a new franchise in Seattle, the future Pilots.

1971: The A's Dick Williams is named AL Manager of the Year.

1977: Reggie Jackson hits three home runs to lead the Yankees to an 8-4 win over the Dodgers in Game 6 and the World Series title.

2001: Larry Dierker resigns as Astros manager.

2004: In the longest game in ALCS history, the Red Sox defeat the Yankees 5-4 in 14 innings. The game ends after five hours and 49 minutes on David Ortiz's walk-off single.

2010: The Mariners name Eric Wedge manager.

2012: The Tigers defeat the Yankees 8-1 to finish an ALCS sweep.

2013: The Cardinals defeat the Dodgers 9-0 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.

1876: Hall of Famer Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown is born in Nyesville, Indiana.

1932: The Phillies Chuck Klein is named NL MVP.

1949: The White Sox acquire Nellie Fox from the A's for catcher Joe Tipton.

1964: Fred Hutchinson resigns as Reds manager.

1964: The Pirates name Harry Walker manager.

1978: The White Sox fire manager Larry Doby.

1981: In the fifth and deciding game of the NLCS, Rick Monday hits a two out, two run homer in the top of the ninth to give the Dodgers a 2-1 win over the Expos and the pennant.

1987: The Yankees name Billy Martin manager for the fifth time.

1999: In the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 6, the Braves Andruw Jones draws a bases loaded walk from the Mets Kenny Rogers, giving Atlanta a 10-9 win and the pennant.

2002: In the first World Series game featuring the two wild card teams, the Giants defeat the Angels 4-3 in Anaheim.

2005: The Astros defeat the Cardinals 5-1 in Game 6 to clinch their first World Series berth in the team's 43 year history.

2006: In the ninth inning of Game 7, Yadier Molina hits a two run homer to give the Cardinals a 3-1 win over the Mets and the NL pennant.

2007: After rejecting a pay cut, Joe Torre resigns as Yankees manager after 12 seasons. In his time as manager, Torre led the Yankees to the postseason each year, winning 10 division titles, six pennants, and four World Series championships.

2007: The Royals name Trey Hillman manager.

2008: In the deciding Game 7, the Rays defeat the Red Sox 3-1 to win their first AL pennant.
