1931: Mickey Mantle is born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma.

1931: The Cardinals Frankie Frisch is named NL MVP.

1937: Hall of Famer Juan Marichal is born in Laguna Verde, Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic.

1964: The Yankees name Johnny Keane to replace Yogi Berra as manager. Meanwhile, Red Schoendienst is named the Cardinals new manager.

1982: The Cardinals defeat the Brewers 6-3 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1988: The Dodgers defeat the A's 5-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1990: The Reds finish a World Series sweep with a 2-1 win over the heavily favored A's.

1994: The Dodgers Raul Mondesi is named NL Rookie of the Year.

2000: The Blue Jays sign Carlos Delgado to a four year deal worth $68 million.

2002: At 20 years old, Francisco Rodriguez becomes the youngest pitcher to win a World Series game. He retired nine straight batters over three innings in the Angels 11-10 win over the Giants in Game 2.

2004: The Red Sox become the first team in baseball history to win a postseason series after falling behind three games to none. Their stunning ALCS rally is completed with a 10-3 win over the Yankees in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium.

2012: The Red Sox name former pitching coach and Blue Jays skipper John Farrell as their new manager. For compensation, Boston sends infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto.
 
October 21st:

1928: Hall of Famer Whitey Ford is born in New York City.

1973: The A's defeat the Mets 5-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1975: Carlton Fisk hits his dramatic home run against the Reds in bottom of the 12th inning in Game 6 to force the World Series to a seventh and deciding game.

1976: The Reds beat the Yankees 7-6 to finish a World Series sweep and their second straight title.

1980: The Phillies defeat the Royals 4-1 in Game 6 to win the World Series for the first time in the franchise's 98 year history.

1998: The Yankees defeat the Padres 3-0 to finish a World Series sweep.

2004: The Cardinals defeat the Astros 5-2 in the deciding Game 7 of the NLCS.

2006: In the first World Series pitching matchup to feature rookies, Anthony Reyes and the Cardinals defeat Justin Verlander and the Tigers 7-2 in Game 1.

2009: The Phillies defeat the Cardinals 10-4 in Game 5 to win the NLCS for the second straight year.
 
October 22nd:

1845: The first known box score appears in the New York Morning News.

1907: Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx is born in Sudlersville, Maryland.

1972: The A's defeat the Reds 3-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1974: The Giants trade Bobby Bonds to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer.

1975: The Reds defeat the Red Sox 4-3 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1997: With a game time temperature of 35 degrees at Cleveland's Jacobs Field, Game 4 of the World Series becomes the coldest postseason game on record. The Indians would defeat the Marlins 10-3.

2002: Giants P.A. announcer Renel Brooks-Moon becomes the first woman to announce a championship game in any professional sport, doing so in Game 3 of the World Series in San Francisco against the Angels.

2013: The Giants and Tim Lincecum agree to a two year deal worth $35 million.
 
October 23rd:

1910: The A's defeat the Cubs 7-2 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1945: Dodgers president Branch Rickey announces the team has signed two black players, Jackie Robinson and pitcher Johnny Wright, to play for the AAA team in Montreal.

1951: The Giants Leo Durocher is named Manager of the Year.

1958: The Pirates Danny Murtaugh is named Manager of the Year.

1993: Joe Carter's walk-off home run off Mitch Williams gives the Blue Jays and 8-6 win in Game 6 over the Phillies and their second straight World Series title. Carter joins Bill Mazeroski as the only players to hit a home run that ends a World Series.

1993: The Dodgers Mike Piazza is named NL Rookie of the Year.

1998: The Dodgers name Davey Johnson manager.

2000: The Pirates name Lloyd McClendon manager.

2010: The Giants defeat the Phillies 3-2 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.
 
October 24th:

1908: Bill Murray introduces "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". The writers were Albert Von Tizler on the music and Jack Norworth on the words.

1972: Jackie Robinson dies at age 53.

1992: The Blue Jays defeat the Braves 4-3 in 11 innings to win the World Series in six games.

2000: The Mets defeat the Yankees 4-3 in Game 3 to break their 14-game World Series winning streak.

2006: The Players Association and owners agree on a new five year collective bargaining agreement.

2012: In the Giants 8-3 win in Game 1 over the Tigers, Pablo Sandoval joins Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, and Albert Pujols as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game.
 
October 25th:

1939: Joe DiMaggio is named AL MVP.

1955: Branch Rickey resigns as Pirates GM.

1955: The Indians trade Larry Doby to the White Sox for Chico Carrasquel and Jim Busby.

1956: Marty Marion resigns as White Sox manager and is replaced by Al Lopez.

1971: Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez is born in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic.

1978: The Padres Gaylord Perry is named NL Cy Young Award winner.

1986: In one of the most memorable games in ML history, the Mets, a strike away from losing the World Series to the Red Sox tie the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the tenth inning. Then, a slow ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson goes through the legs of Bill Buckner, allowing the winning run to scores. The Mets win the game 6-5 and tie the series at three games apiece.

1987: The Twins defeat the Cardinals 4-2 in Game 7 to win the franchise's first World Series title since 1924, when they were the Washington Senators.

2005: In the longest World Series game ever, Geoff Blum hits a solo home run in the 14th inning to give the White Sox the lead in Houston. Chicago would go on to win 7-5 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. The game took five hours and 41 minutes to play.

2009: The Indians name Manny Acta manager.

2010: The Blue Jays name John Farrell manager.
 
October 26th:

1911: The A's defeat the Giants 13-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1940: The Tigers Hank Greenberg is named AL MVP.

1950: The Yankees Phil Rizzuto is named AL MVP.

1960: Senators President Calvin Griffith moves the team to Minnesota, and renames them the Twins. Washington will get an expansion team that starts play the next season. Another AL expansion team is Los Angeles is also announced.

1980: Former Tigers and Yankees skipper Ralph Houk comes out of retirement to become the Red Sox new manager.

1982: The Phillies Steve Carlton is named NL Cy Young Award winner.

1985: In one of the most infamous calls in World Series history, first base umpire Don Denkinger calls the Royals Jorge Orta safe when the throw from Cardinals first baseman Jack Clark to the pitcher Todd Worrell covering first base clearly beats him and Worrell stepping on the base. Dane Iorg would later in the ninth inning hit a walk-off two run single, giving the Royals a 3-2 win and force a deciding Game 7.

1996: The Yankees defeat the Braves 3-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1997: With two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7, Craig Counsell scores on Edgar Renteria's walk-off RBI single, giving the Marlins a 3-2 win over the Indians and the World Series title. The Marlins, in their fifth season, become the youngest team to win a World Series.

1998: The Mets and Mike Piazza agree to a seven year deal worth $91 million.

2000: The Yankees defeat the Mets 4-2 in Game 5 to win the World Series. Derek Jeter becomes the first player in ML history to win the MVP of the All-Star Game and World Series in the same season.

2002: In Game 6 against the Giants, the Angels stage the biggest in-game rally in World Series history, coming back from a 5-0 deficit and win 6-5. The Angels win forces a deciding Game 7.

2005: The White Sox defeat the Astros 1-0 to finish a World Series sweep and their first world championship since 1917.

2014: Cardinals outfielder Oscar Tavares dies in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic at 22 years old.
 
October 27th:

1922: Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner is born in Santa Rita, New Mexico.

1954: After 274 days, the often stormy marriage of Joe DiMaggio and actress Marilyn Monroe ends in divorce.

1972: The Braves trade outfielder Rico Carty to the Rangers for pitcher Jim Panther.

1985: The Royals defeat the Cardinals 11-0 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1986: The Mets defeat the Red Sox 8-5 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1989: After a ten day delay due to the earthquake in the Bay Area, the World Series resumes with the A's winning Game 3 by a score of 13-7.

1991: In what many argue was the greatest World Series of all time, the Twins win Game 7 in ten innings, 1-0 over the Braves. Gene Larkin drove in Dan Gladden with the only run of the game and Jack Morris pitched all ten innings for the Twins. Both teams had finished last in their divisions the prior season.

1998: President Bill Clinton signs into law legislation overriding part of a Supreme Court ruling from 1922, which exempted baseball from anti-trust laws on grounds that it was not considered interstate commerce. The exemption had helped owners use the reserve clause to not allow players to have bargaining rights.

1999: The Yankees defeat the Braves 4-1 to finish a World Series sweep for the second straight season.

2002: The Angels defeat the Giants 4-1 in Game 7 to win the first World Series title in the team's 42 year history.

2003: The Red Sox do not renew the contract of manager Grady Little.

2004: The Red Sox defeat the Cardinals 3-0 to finish a sweep and win their first World Series title since 1918.

2006: The Cardinals defeat the Tigers 4-2 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

2006: Bruce Bochy leaves the Padres to take over as manager for the division rival Giants.

2013: The Red Sox 4-2 win in Game 4 over the Cardinals becomes the first game in World Series history to end on a pickoff. Pinch-running for Allen Craig, rookie Kolten Wong is caught too far off the base by Koji Uehara and is picked off.
 
October 28th:

1953: Red Barber resigns as Dodgers broadcaster and takes the job with the crosstown rival Yankees.

1954: The owners vote down the sale of the Philadelphia A's to a hometown syndicate. A week later, the Mack family sells the team to Arnold Johnson, who moves the team to Kansas City.

1979: Dick Howser takes over as Yankees manager for Billy Martin.

1981: The Dodgers defeat the Yankees 9-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1989: The A's defeat the Giants 9-6 to finish a World Series sweep.

1995: THE BRAVES DEFEAT THE INDIANS 1-0 IN GAME 6 TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES. TOM GLAVINE PITCHES EIGHT INNINGS ALLOWING ONE HIT AND MARK WOHLERS PITCHED A PERFECT NINTH INNING. DAVID JUSTICE'S SIXTH INNING HOME RUN DECIDES THE GAME AND THE SERIES FOR THE BRAVES.

2002: The Devil Rays name Lou Piniella manager.

2007: The Red Sox defeat the Rockies 4-3 to finish a World Series sweep.

2007: Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract with the Yankees. His announcement during the fourth game of the World Series and his no-show to receive the Hank Aaron Award gets him criticism all over baseball.

2011: The Cardinals defeat the Rangers 6-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.
 
October 29th:

1931: A's pitcher Lefty Grove is named AL MVP.

1959: The White Sox Early Wynn wins the Cy Young Award.

1975: The Red Sox Fred Lynn is named AL Rookie of the Year.

1991: The Yankees name Buck Showalter manager.

1991: The Braves Bobby Cox becomes the first to win Manager of the Year in both leagues. He won in the AL in 1985 with the Blue Jays.

2008: Playing the last three innings of the first suspended game in series history, the Phillies defeat the Rays 4-3 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

2013: Jose Abreu, who defected from Cuba the prior Summer, agrees to a six year deal worth $68 million with the White Sox.
 
October 30th:

1929: The Cardinals name Gabby Street manager.

1963: Six days after winning the Cy Young, Sandy Koufax is named NL MVP.

1974: The A's Catfish Hunter wins the AL Cy Young.

1975: Giants pitcher John Montefusco is named NL Rookie of the Year. Expos catcher Gary Carter placed second.

1986: The Orioles trade Storm Davis to the Padres for Terry Kennedy and minor leaguer Mark Williamson.

2000: The Diamondbacks name team broadcaster Bob Brenley manager.

2001: President George W. Bush throws out the first pitch before Game 3 of the World Series between the Diamondbacks and Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He wore a NYFD jacket in honor of the heroes of September 11th.

2007: The Yankees name Joe Girardi manager.

2008: The Brewers name Ken Macha manager.

2013: The Red Sox defeat the Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6 to win the World Series, marking the first time they clinched the Fall Classic at Fenway Park since 1918.
 
October 31st:

1972: The Indians Gaylord Perry is named AL Cy Young Award winner.

1979: The Orioles Mike Flanigan wins the AL Cy Young.

2001: Tino Martinez hits a game tying home run in the bottom of the ninth off the Diamondbacks Byung-Hyun Kim in Game 4 of the World Series. Derek Jeter hits a walk-off home run in extras to give the Yankees a 3-2 win and tie the series two games apiece.

2011: Cardinals manager Tony La Russa announces his retirement. He is third on the all time managerial list with 2,728 wins, trialing only Connie Mack and John McGraw.

2013: The Diamondbacks name manager.

2014: The Cubs dismiss manager Rick Renteria.
