September 18th:

1903: The Pirates sweep a doubleheader from the Boston Beaneaters to clinch the N.L. pennant. They will play the Boston Americans in the first World Series.

1954: The Indians defeat the Tigers 3-2 to clinch the A.L. pennant.

1959: Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is born in Spokane, Washington.

1963: Just 1,752 fans watch the final baseball game played at the Polo Grounds.

1968: The Cardinals Ray Washburn pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants. The day before, the Giants Gaylord Perry no-hit the Cardinals, marking the first time in M.L. history two teams were involved in a no-hitter in consecutive days.

1976: In a 4-3 loss to the Indians, the Orioles Frank Robinson hits a pinch-single in his final M.L. at bat.

1984: The Tigers clinch the A.L. East title with a 3-0 win over the Brewers. The Tigers led the division from the start of the season.

1996: Rogers Clemens equals his own record by striking out 20 batters in a Red Sox 4-0 win over the Tigers.

1997: In the first inning of a 10-2 win over the Mets, Ryan Klesko hits the Braves 12th grand slam of the season, setting a new M.L. record. The Braves win also clinched their sixth straight postseason appearance.

1999: The Cubs Sammy Sosa becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 60 home runs in a season twice.*

2002: All Major League Baseball teams celebrate the first "Roberto Clemente Day".

2006: In an 8-2 loss to the Tigers, the White Sox Jim Thome becomes the second player in M.L. history to hit 40 home runs for three different teams.

2006: The Mets defeat the Marlins 4-0 to win their first N.L. East title since 1988.

2006: The Dodgers hit four straight home runs in the ninth inning to tie the game against the Padres. The homers were hit by Jeff Kent, J.D. Drew, Russell Martin, and Marlon Anderson. Then in the tenth, Nomar Garciaparra hits a walk-off, two run homer to give the Dodgers an 11-10 win.

2007: In a 12-0 win over the Orioles, the Yankees Mike Mussina becomes the first pitcher in A.L. history to record 16 straight seasons of ten wins.

2008: The Padres Greg Maddux records his 20th straight season of 13 or more wins, breaking Cy Young's M.L. record.

2013: In a 4-3 win over the Rockies, the Cardinals Yadier Molina sets a record for catchers with his 41st double of the season.
 
September 19th:

1926: Hall of Famer Duke Snider is born in Los Angeles, California.

1929: The Indians Joe Sewell sets a M.L. record by playing in his 115th straight game without striking out.

1939: Elmer Gedeon, a September call-up, collects all three hits of his five game M.L. career in the Senators 10-9 win over the Indians. In 1944, he will be the first of two M.L. players killed in World War II.

1949: With a 4-3 win over the Cardinals, the Phillies assure themselves of not having a losing season for the first time since 1932.

1955: The Cubs Ernie Banks sets a M.L. record with his fifth grand slam of the season in a 6-5, 12 inning loss to the Cardinals.

1973: The Braves Davey Johnson hits his 43rd home run of the season, his 42nd as a second baseman. That ties the record for home runs by a second baseman.

1982: The Mariners Orlando Mercado becomes the third player in M.L. history to hit a grand slam for his first M.L. hit. Only Bobby Bonds in 1968 and Bill Duggleby in 1898 were the others to do so.

1993: The Braves Tom Glavine becomes the pitcher since Ferguson Jenkins in 1973 to win 20 games in three consecutive seasons.

1995: In a 15-4 win over the Rockies, the Padres Ken Caminiti becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same games three times in a month.

1998: In a 5-3 loss to the Angels, the Mariners Alex Rodriguez becomes the third players, first infielder, in M.L. history to have 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season. Jose Canseco in 1988 and Barry Bonds in 1996 are the others.

2001: The Cardinals Albert Pujols sets a N.L. rookie record with 120 RBIs.

2001: MLB and the Players Association create a disaster relief fund with both organizations donating $10 million to aid victims of the September 11th attacks.

2007: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays become the first team in M.L. history to lose 90 games in ten straight seasons.

2008: In the Rays 11-1 win over the Twins, a fly ball hit by Carlos Pena originally called fan interference gets overruled by replay and becomes a home run. It is the first called to be reversed in MLB's new replay system.

2011: In the Yankees 6-4 win over the Twins, Mariano Rivera records his 602nd career save, breaking Trevor Hoffman's M.L. record.
 
September 20th:

1902: The White Sox Jim Callahan pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

1907: The Pirates Nick Maddox pitches a no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers. At age 20, he's the youngest to do so.

1908: The White Sox Frank Smith pitches his second career no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the A's.

1919: Babe Ruth scores the winning runs in both games of a doubleheader in the last games he would play at Fenway Park for the Red Sox.

1924: In the Cubs 7-3, 12-inning win over the Giants, Grover Cleveland Alexander collects his 300th victory.

1932: The Cubs clinch the N.L. pennant with a 5-2 win over the Pirates.

1951: Ford Frick is elected as commissioner, replacing "Happy" Chandler.

1954: With a 7-1 win over the Dodgers, the Giants clinch the N.L. pennant.

1955: Willie Mays becomes the second player in M.L. history to hit 50 home runs in a season.

1958: The Orioles Hoyt Wilhelm pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Yankees.

1959: The Giants lose to the Dodgers 8-2 in their last game at Seals Stadium. They would move to Candlestick Park the next season.

1961: Sandy Koufax pitches the whole game as the Dodgers beat the Cubs 3-2 in 13 innings in the final game played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

1968: In a 4-3 loss to the Red Sox, Mickey Mantle hits the last of his 536 home runs off Jim Lonborg.

1973: Willie Mays announces his retirement.

1983: The Tigers tie the A.L. record with 11 runs in the first inning in a 14-1 win over the Orioles that was shortened to five innings because of rain.

1984: The Padres clinch their first N.L. West title with a 5-4 win over the Giants.

1986: In a 10-6 loss to the Astros, the Padres Tony Gwynn ties the N.L. record with five stolen bases. For his career, Gwynn only averaged 16 steals a season.

1988: Wade Boggs becomes the first player this century to have six straight seasons of 200 hits.

1997: The Cardinals Mark McGwire becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 20 homers for two teams in the same season. Before being traded to the Cardinals, he hit 34 for the A's.

1998: Cal Ripken Jr. takes himself out of the lineup for the Orioles game against the Yankees, ending his remarkable streak of 2,632 consecutive games played.

2002: The Orioles Mike Bordick sets a M.L. record for shortstops by playing 102 straight games without an error.

2003: With Marcus Giles 20th home run, the Braves tie the N.L. record of having six players hit 20 home runs in the same season. The others were Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Gary Sheffield, Javy Lopez, and Vinny Castilla.

2008: With a 5-4 win over the Cardinals, the Cubs clinch their second straight N.L. Central title. It marks the first time the Cubs have been in the postseason in consecutive years since the team played in the World Series from 1906-1908.

2010: A teenage fan dressed in a red spandex suit runs onto the field at Philadelphia in the Phillies game against the Braves. As he is eluding security guards, the Braves Matt Diaz trips him up in left field. The fan is released from juvenile detention the next day and his parents apologized for their son's actions.
 
September 21st:

1896: Connie Mack leaves the Pirates to manage the Western League's Milwaukee Brewers.

1934: The Cardinals Paul Dean pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Dodgers.

1949: The Phillies beat the Cubs 3-1 to assure their first winning season since 1932.

1952: The Braves lose to the Dodgers 8-2 in their final home game at Boston.

1956: The Yankees set a M.L. record for leaving 20 runners on base in a nine inning game in a 13-7 loss to the Red Sox.

1959: In an 8-6 win over the Pirates, the Braves Warren Spahn records his fourth straight season of 20 wins.

1963: In the ninth inning in a 7-6 win over the Cubs, the Pirates Jerry Lynch sets a M.L. record with his 15th career pinch-home run.

1966: The smallest crowd in Wrigley Field history watch then Cubs beat the Reds 9-3. Just 530 fans watch the game.

1970: The A's Vida Blue pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Twins.

1987: With two steals in the Mets 7-1 win over the Cubs, Darryl Strawberry joins Howard Johnson as the first teammates in M.L. history to both hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases.

1998: In an 8-1 loss to the Giants, the Pirates Jason Kendall sets a N.L. record for catchers with his 26th stolen base of the season.

2001: In their first home game since the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Mets Mike Piazza hits a game winning home run in the eighth inning to beat the Braves 3-2. 41,235 fans pack Shea Stadium for the emotional night.

2003: With an 8-0 win over the Marlins, the Braves Greg Maddux becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 16 straight seasons of 15 wins.

2008: The Yankees defeat the Orioles 7-3 in the final game played at the original Yankee Stadium. 54,610 fans attend the last game played in "The House that Ruth Built".

2008: With a 7-2 win over the Twins, the Rays clinch their first postseason berth. Before this season, the Rays had never finished higher than fourth in the A.L. East.
 
September 22nd:

1911: Cy Young defeats the Pirates for the last of his 511 career victories.

1912: Against the Browns, the A's Eddie Collins steals six bases, doing so for the second time in his career. He is the only player in M.L. history to have two career six stolen base games.

1920: Hall of Famer Bob Lemon is born in San Bernardino, California.

1927: Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda is born in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

1936: With wins of 12-0 and 14-0 over the Browns, the Tigers record the most lopsided doubleheader shutouts in M.L. history.

1948: Stan Musial records his fourth game of five hits this season, setting a N.L. record and tying Ty Cobb's M.L. record.

1959: With a 4-2 win over the Indians, the White Sox win their first A.L. pennant in 40 years.

1962: The Mets Al Jackson loses for the 20th time this season in an 8-2 defeat to the Cubs. Along with Roger Craig, they become the first teammate pitchers to lose 20 games since Bucky Walters and Joe Bowman of the 1936 Phillies.

1966: The Orioles win their first A.L. pennant since moving to Baltimore. For the franchise, it's their first pennant since 1944 when they were the St. Louis Browns.

1969: Willie Mays joins Babe Ruth as the only players in M.L. history to hit 600 home runs.

1977: The Twins Bert Blyleven pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Angels.

1986: The Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela becomes the first Mexican-born pitcher in M.L. history to record 20 wins in a season.

1993: The Rockies set a home attendance record with 4,483,350 fans attending games at Mile High Stadium.

1993: Nolan Ryan's career comes to an end when he injures is elbow in a game against the Mariners. He had already announced he would retire at the end of the season.

1996: The Reds Barry Larkin becomes the first shortstop in M.L. history to record 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season.

1997: The Braves win the N.L. East, clinching their M.L. record sixth straight division title.

1998: The Mariners Ken Griffey, Jr. joins Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig as the only players in M.L. history to record three straight seasons of 140 RBIs.

1998: With a first inning walk, the Mets John Olerud ties Barry Bonds' N.L. record by reaching base 15 straight times. He would fall one short of Ted Williams' M.L. record.

2000: In a 12-5 loss to the Reds, the Astros set a new N.L. record with their 240th home run of the season. In that same game, the Astros Jose Lima gives up his 47th home run of the season, setting a new N.L. record.

2003: The Yankees Alfonso Soriano hits his 13th leadoff home run of the season, setting a new M.L. record.

2003: The Tigers lose their 118th game of the season, setting a new A.L. record.
 
September 23rd:

1905: In an 8-5 loss to the Senators, Tigers rookie Ty Cobb hits an inside-the-park homer for his first career home run.

1908: On an apparent game winning hit that would have beaten the Cubs, the Giants Fred Merkle does not touch second base. He is called out and the game is ruled a tie. The played now known as "Merkel's Boner" will cost the Giants the N.L. pennant.

1939: In the first of a doubleheader won by the Dodgers over the Phillies 22-4, Cookie Lavagetto reaches base seven straight times.

1955: The Yankees defeat the Red Sox in the nightcap of a doubleheader 3-2, winning the A.L. pennant.

1957: A Hank Aaron home run lifts the Braves to a 4-2, 11 inning win over the Cardinals, clinching the N.L. pennant.

1957: Ted Williams sets a M.L. record by reaching base 16 straight times.

1973: The A's clinch their third straight A.L. West title.

1979: In the tenth inning of a 7-4 win over the Mets, the Cardinals Lou Brock collects the last of his 938 stolen bases.

1983: The Phillies Steve Carlton records his 300th career win.

2000: The Devil Rays Fred McGriff joins Frank Robinson as the only players to hit 200 home runs in both leagues.

2001: The Rangers Alex Rodriguez hits his 48th home run of the season, breaking the record for shortstops.

2006: Barry Bonds hits his 734th career home, setting a new N.L. record.

2006: The Orioles Jay Gibbons hits a foul ball back over the screen at Camden Yards that strikes a fan, who happened to be his wife, Laura.

2007: The Nationals beat the Phillies 5-3 in the final baseball game played at RFK Stadium.

2008: The Red Sox clinch the A.L. Wild Card berth. It also eliminates the Yankees, ending their run of 13 straight postseason appearances.

2009: Braves manager Bobby Cox signs a one year extension and announces that 2010 will be his final season as the Atlanta skipper.

2011: The Brewers beat the Marlins 4-1 to clinch the N.L. Central. It was their first division title since they won the A.L. East in 1982.

2011: The Diamondbacks beat the Giants 3-1 to win the N.L. West.

2013: With a 2-1 win over the Cubs and the Cardinals loss to the Nationals, the Pirates clinch their first postseason appearance since 1992.

1957: The Dodgers beat the Pirates 2-0 in their final game at Brooklyn.

1998: In a 9-6 win over the Orioles, the Red Sox Tom Gordon sets a M.L. record with his 42nd straight save (since broken).

2002: With two home runs by the Yankees Jason Giambi against the Devil Rays, he and brother Jeremy combined for 60 home runs for the season, breaking the prior record for siblings held by Joe and Vince DiMaggio in 1937.

2004: With an 8-7 win over the Marlins, the Braves clinch the N.L. East. It extends their record streak to 13 straight division titles.

2006: With an 11-4 win over the Royals, the Tigers clinch their first postseason appearance since 1987.

2006: In a 2-1 win over the Pirates, the Padres Trevor Hoffman records his 479th save, becoming MLB's all-time leader.
 
September 25th:

1907: The Pirates Honus Wagner steals four bases against the Giants, including second, third, and home in the second inning. Fred Clarke also stole four bases for the Pirates.

1917: Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto is born in Brooklyn, New York.

1929: During the fifth inning of the Red Sox/Yankees game at Fenway Park, a telegram arrives and the two teams are summoned to home plate. They are told of the death of Yankees manager Miller Huggins. A moment of silence takes place and flag are immediately lowered to half-staff.

1930: Joe McCarthy resigns as Cubs manager and is replaced by Rogers Hornsby.

1941: The Dodgers win their first N.L. pennant in 21 years.

1955: At age 20, the Tigers Al Kaline becomes the youngest player in M.L. history to win a batting title.

1956: The Dodgers Sal Maglie pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Phillies.

1960: The Yankees defeat the Red Sox 4-3 to win the A.L. pennant. It's the last of manager Casey Stengel's ten pennants.

1965: At the alleged age of 60, A's pitcher Satchel Paige becomes the oldest player in M.L. history, pitching three innings against the Red Sox.

1965: At age 34, Willie Mays becomes the oldest player in M.L. history to hit 50 home runs in a season. Ten years earlier, he became the youngest to do so.

1968: Mickey Mantle goes 1-3 with a walk in his final game at Yankee Stadium.

1974: In a first of its kind operation, Dr. Frank Jobe transplants a tendon from the wrist of Dodgers pitcher Tommy John and places it in his left elbow. The surgery allows John to pitch an additional 164 games in his M.L. career. The operation is now commonly as "Tommy John Surgery".

1979: The Angels defeat the Royals 4-1 to win their first A.L. West title.

1980: The A's Brian Kingman becomes the last player in the 20th Century to lose 20 games in a season.

1986: The Astros Mike Scott pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants. With the win, the Astros clinched the N.L. West title. It's the first championship in M.L. history to clinched with a no-hitter.

1989: The Red Sox Wade Boggs extends his M.L. record with his seventh straight season of 200 hits.

1996: With an intentional walk in a 7-5 loss to the Dodgers, the Giants Barry Bonds sets a N.L. record with 149 bases on balls in a sesason.

1997: The Astos beat the Cubs 9-1 to win the N.L. Central title. It was 11 years to the day after they last clinched a division title.

1998: By defeating the Devil Rays 6-1, the Yankees set an A.L. record with their 112th win of the season.

2001: In the Brewers 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks, the Brewers Jeromy Burnitz and Richie Sexson become the first teammates to hit three home runs each in the same game.

2003: The Cubs Sammy Sosa becomes the first player in N.L. history to have nine straight seasons of 100 RBIs.

2003: The Blue Jays Carlos Delgado becomes the 15th player in M.L. history, fifth in A.L. history, to hit four home runs in one game.

2008: The Dodgers clinch the N.L. West title. It's the 13th straight postseason appearance for manager Joe Torre, who managed the Yankees for the first 12. The Yankees missed the postseason that season.

2010: In a 4-3 win over the A's, the Rangers Neftali Feliz sets the M.L. rookie record with his 38th save of the season.

2010: The Braves beat the Nationals 5-0 to give Bobby Cox his 2,500th win as a manager.
 
September 26th:

1908: The Cubs Ed Reulbach pitches two shutouts over Brooklyn, winning the games by scores of 5-0 and 3-0.

1926: Ty Cobb sits out a doubleheader against the Red Sox on his final day with the Tigers.

1954: The A's defeat the Yankees 8-6 in their final game before the team moves from Philadelphia to Kansas City the next season.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 60th home run of the season, tying Babe Ruth's 34-year old record.

1961: The Reds defeat the Cubs 8-3 to win their first N.L. pennant since 1940.

1965: The Twins defeat the Senators 2-1 to win the A.L. pennant. It's the first pennant for the franchise since they were the original Washington Senators in 1933.

1971: Jim Palmer pitches a 5-0 shutout to win his 20th game of the season, becoming the fourth Orioles pitcher to do so (Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar, and Pat Dobson). The Orioles join the 1920 White Sox as the only teams in M.L. history to have four 20-game winners.

1976: The Expos lose both games of a doubleheader against the Phillies in the last games played at Jarry Park. The Phillies wins clinched them the N.L. East title.

1981: The Astros Nolan Ryan pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Dodgers. Ryan becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to throw five no-hitters.

1983: The Cardinals Bob Forsch pitches his second career no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Expos.

1987: Padres catcher Benito Santiago sets a M.L. rookie record by extending his hitting streak to 28 games.

1993: The Mariners Randy Johnson becomes the 12th pitcher this century to strikeout 300 batters.

1998: In a 5-2 loss to the Orioles, the Red Sox Dennis Eckersley makes his 1,071st career appearance, setting the M.L. record for pitchers.

2007: The Cardinals Albert Pujols becomes the first player in M.L. history to record 30 homers and 100 RBIs in each of his first seven seasons.

2008: The Rays clinch their first A.L. East title.
 
September 27th:

1905: The Pilgrims Bill Dinneen pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the White Sox.

1914: The Indians Nap Lajoie collects his 3,000th career hit.

1920: Gambler Bill Maharg tells the Philadelphia North American that he and former M.L. pitcher Billy Burns offered eight White Sox players $100,000 to throw the 1919 World Series. One of the accused players is "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, who hit a two run double in the sixth inning against the Tigers. It turns out to be his last M.L. hit as the players involved are suspended for the rest of the season while the investigation into the allegations are conducted.

1928: The A's Lefty Grove becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to strike out the side on nine pitches twice in his career.

1931: At age 54, the Senators Nick Altrock becomes the first player in M.L. history to appear in a game in five different decades.

1935: The Cubs beat the Cardinals for their 21st consecutive win and also clinch the N.L. pennant.

1938: Lou Gehrig hits the last of his 493 career home runs, 15 years after he hit his first.

1940: The Tigers beat the Indians 2-0 to clinch the A.L. pennant.

1942: The Cardinals beat the Cubs 9-2 to clinch the N.L pennant.

1952: In an 11-3 win over the Dodgers, the Braves Eddie Mathews becomes the first rookie in M.L. history to hit three home runs in one game.

1953: The St. Louis Browns lose 2-1 in 11 innings to the White Sox in their final game in front of just 3,174 fans. The next season, they move to Baltimore and become known as the Orioles.

1954: Willie Mays appears on the very first episode of The Tonight Show, which was hosted by Steve Allen.

1967: The Phillies Jim Bunning loses to the Astros 1-0. It's the record fifth time this season Bunning had lost by a 1-0 score.

1973: The Angels Nolan Ryan strikes out the Twins Rich Reese to end the game. It is his 383rd strikeout of the season, breaking the M.L. record held by Sandy Koufax.

1989: The A's defeat the Rangers 5-0 to win the A.L. West. Across the bay, the Giants clinch the N.L. West thanks to the Padres losing to the Reds 2-1.

1992: In a 3-2 loss to the Rangers, the Mariners Randy Johnson strikes out 18 batters, tying Ron Guidry's A.L. record for left-handers.

1993: In a 7-3 win over the Dodgers, the Cubs Randy Myers becomes the first pitcher in N.L. history to record 50 saves in a season.

1993: The White Sox defeat the Mariners 4-2 to win the A.L. West title.

1996: The Orioles Roberto Alomar spits in the face of umpire John Hirshbeck, resulting in a five game suspension. Alomar would appeal the suspension, allowing him to play and helping the Orioles win the A.L. Wild Card.

1998: In the Cardinals final game of the season against the Expos, Mark McGwire hits his 69th and 70th home runs of the season.

1998: The Yankees finish the season with a recordm of 114-48 and a winning percentage of .704. They become the first team in M.L. history to play over .700 for the entire season.

1998: In the Reds 4-1 win over the Pirates, two sets of brothers play in the same game for the first time in M.L. history. For the Reds, Barry Larkin is the shortstop with Stephen playing first, while Aaron Boone is a third and Bret at second.

1998: In a 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks, the Padres Trevor Hoffman ties the N.L. record with his 53rd save of the season.

1999: The Tigers defeat the Royals 8-2 in the final game at Tiger Stadium.

2000: Team USA, managed by Tommy Lasorda, shocks the baseball world by defeating Cuba 4-0 to win the Gold Medal at the Olympics. Cuba had won 21 straight games in the Olympics. Ben Sheets pitched the shutout for Team USA.

2002: In a 3-1 win over the Mets, the Braves John Smoltz sets a new N.L. record with his 54th save of the season.

2003: The Braves Javy Lopez hits his 43rd home run of the season, breaking the M.L. record for catchers.

2003: The Cubs Sammy Sosa sets a new N.L. record by recording his sixth straight season of 40 home runs.

2005: The Atlanta Braves clinch their 14th straight division title.

2006: The Marlins Anibal Sanchez wins his tenth game of the season, making the team the first in M.L. history to have four rookie pitchers win ten games. The others were Scott Olsen, Josh Johnson, and Ricky Nolasco.

2010: The Phillies defeat the Nationals 8-0 to win their fourth straight N.L. East title.

2012: In the Tigers 5-4 win over the Royals, Doug Fister sets a new A.L. record by striking out nine straight batters.
 
September 28th:

1919: In the quickest nine inning game in M.L. history, the Giants defeat the Phillies in just 51 minutes.

1920: A grand jury indicted eight members of the White Sox on charges they threw the 1919 World Series.

1923: In a 24-4 win over the Red Sox, the Yankees set an A.L. record with 30 hits.

1924: The Cardinals Rogers Hornsby wins the N.L. batting title with a .424 average.

1930: Babe Ruth pitches a complete game in a 9-3 win over the Red Sox. It was the first time he had pitched since the end of the 1921 season.

1930: The Cubs Hack Wilson finishes the season by setting a M.L. record with 190 RBIs. In 1999, baseball historian Jerome Holtzman finds a missing RBI from a game in July, revising his record total to 191.

1941: Going into a doubleheader against the A's, the Red Sox Ted Williams had a batting average of .39955, which would have been rounded up to .400. Williams elects to play instead of sitting out. He goes 6-8 and finishes with a .406 average.

1951: The Yankees Allie Reynolds pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Red Sox.

1958: At age 40, Ted Williams wins his sixth batting title, becoming the oldest to do so.

1960: In his final M.L. at bat, Ted Williams homers off the Orioles Jack Fischer.

1962: The Cubs defeat the Mets in the first game in M.L. history to have two 100-loss teams. The Cubs had 101 while the loss was the Mets 119th of the season. Only 595 fans watched the game at Wrigley Field.

1965: The Angels Dave Morehead sets an A.L. record with his 10th straight loss in a 4-3 defeat to the Red Sox.

1968: The White Sox lose 1-0 to the Angels. It was the ninth time they lost by a 1-0 score, tying an A.L. record.

1974: The Angels Nolan Ryan pitches his third no-hitter and strikes out 15 in a 4-0 win over the Twins.

1975: The A's Vida Blue, Glenn Abbott, Paul Lindblad, and Rollie Fingers combine to pitch a no-hitter against the Angels.

1976: The Giants John Montefusco pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Braves.

1983: The Phillies beat the Cubs 13-6 to clinch the N.L. East title. It was also the 7,000th win in franchise history.

1988: Orel Hershisher pitches ten scoreless innings to extend his streak to 59 straight, breaking Don Drysdale's record.

1995: The Expos Greg Harris becomes the first pitcher post 1900 to pitch ambidextrously. In the ninth inning against the Reds, he pitches to two batters each as a right and left handed pitcher.

1997: Tony Gwynn ties Houns Wagner's record of eight batting titles. He also becomes the first to win four straight since Rogers Hornsby won six in a row from 1920-1925.

2000: The Brewers lose to the Reds 8-1 in their final game in Milwaukee County Stadium.

2001: The Rangers Alex Rodriguez becomes the first shortstop in M.L. history to hit 50 home runs in a season.

2003: In the final game at Veterans Stadium, the Phillies lose to the Braves 5-2.

2008: At age 39, the Yankees Mike Mussina becomes the oldest pitcher in M.L. history to record his first 20-win season.

2008: With their 3-1 win over the Cubs and the Mets 4-2 loss to the Marlins, the Brewers win the N.L. Wild Card, clinching their first postseason berth since 1982.

2008: The Mets lose to the Marlins 4-2 in the final game at Shea Stadium.

2008: The Astros end the season committing just 67 errors, the fewest in N.L. history.

2009: The Angels beat the Rangers 11-0 to win their fifth A.L. West title in six years.

2011: In one of the wildest days in M.L. history, the Braves lose to the Phillies 4-3 while the Cardinals beat the Astros 8-0. The Cardinals, who trailed the Braves by over nine game early in the month finish their comeback and win the N.L. Wild Card. Meanwhile, the Red Sox lose in the bottom of the ninth to the Orioles. Minutes after the Red Sox lost, the Rays come back from 7-0 down to beat the Yankees. The Red Sox, who also had a big lead early in September in the standings, lose the A.L. Wild Card to the Rays.

2011: The Braves Eric O'Flaherty finishes the season with a 0.98 ERA, the lowest posted for a pitcher in M.L. history who made at least 75 appearances.
 
September 29th:

1907: The Phillies George McQuillan sets a rookie record with 25 straight scoreless innings pitched to start his career.

1908: The Cardinals, in a 7-0 loss to the Pirates, set a M.L. record by being shutout for the 33rd time this season.

1913: With a 1-0 win over the A's, the Senators Walter Johnson finishes his season with 36 wins.

1914: After being in last place mid-July, the Boston Braves clinch the N.L. pennant.

1915: With a 5-0 win over the Braves, the Phillies clinch their first N.L. pennant.

1934: At Griffith Stadium in Washington, Babe Ruth hits the last of the 659 home runs he hit with the Yankees.

1943: The Browns Vern Stephens becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit two extra-inning homers in the same game. He hits one in the top of the 11th to put the Browns in the lead, then after the Red Sox tie the game in the bottom half, Stephens hits the game winner in the 13th.

1954: The Giants defeat the Indians 5-2 in Game 1 of the World Series, which will be remembered for Willie May's legendary over the shoulder catch in center field.

1959: The Dodgers defeat the Braves in the second game of the playoff series to win the N.L. pennant. The won the game 6-5 in 12 innings after winning the first game.

1963: Stan Musial goes 2-3 in his final game, helping the Cardinals beat the Reds 3-2.

1964: In a 5-4, 11-inning win over the Colt .45s, the Giants Masanori Murakami becomes the first Japanese-born pitcher to record a win in M.L. history.

1968: The Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski wins his second straight batting title. He did it with a .301 average, the lowest to win the batting title in A.L. history.

1971: The Expos Ron Hunt sets a M.L. record by being hit by a pitch 50 times this season.

1973: Hank Aaron hits his 40th home run of the season. He joins Braves teammates Davey Johnson and Darrell Evans as the only trio to hit 40 homers for the same team in M.L. history.

1979: In a 6-2 win over the Cubs, the Dodgers Manny Mota sets a M.L. record with his 146th career pinch-hit.

1983: The A's Mike Warren pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the White Sox.

1986: Mike and Greg Maddux become the first brothers to start against each other in M.L. history. Greg leads the Cubs over his older brother Mike and the Phillies 6-3.

1987: The Yankees Don Mattingly sets a M.L. record with his sixth grand slam of the season.

1998: The Red Sox defeat the Indians 11-3 in Game 1 of the ALDS, ending a 13 game postseason losing streak.

2001: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki collects his 234th hit of the season, breaking the rookie record of Joe Jackson from 1911.

2002: The Braves and Mets combine to use 45 players in the game, tying the record for a nine-inning game.

2002: Barry Bonds finishes the season with an OBP of .582, setting a new M.L. record.

2004: The Braves Bobby Cox becomes the ninth manager in M.L. history to win 2,000 games.

2005: After nearly blowing a 15 game lead in August over the Indians, the White Sox win the A.L. Central title.
 
September 30th:

1927: Babe Ruth hits his 60th home run of the season.

1933: In a 12-2 win over the Cardinals, the Cubs Babe Herman becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit for the cycle three times.

1945: Hank Greenberg's grand slam helps the Tigers beat the Browns 6-3 and win the A.L. pennant.

1947: At 21 years, 9 months old, the Dodgers Ralph Branca becomes the youngest pitcher to start the first game of the World Series. The Dodgers would lose to the Yankees 5-1.

1951: After the Giants lose to the Braves, the Dodgers rally from five runs down to beat the Phillies 9-8 in 14 innings. The two teams will play a best of three to determine the N.L. pennant.

1961: The Angels beat the Indians to record their 70th win of the season, the most for a first-year franchise in M.L. history.

1962: The Mets lose to the Cubs for their 120th defeat of their first season, the most of any team in the 20th century.

1966: In a 5-4 win over the White Sox, Roger Maris hits a pinch-home run in his final at bat with the Yankees. He would be traded to the Cardinals after the season.

1969: With a 3-2 win over the Reds, the Braves win the first N.L. West title.

1972: In what would turn out to be his final game, the Pirates Roberto Clemente becomes the 11th player in M.L. history to record 3,000 hits. It would be the final hit of his career. He would be killed in a plane crash on New Year's Eve.

1973: The Yankees lose to the Tigers 8-5 in their last game in Yankee Stadium before the ballpark goes through a two-year renovation. Manager Ralph Houk resigned after the game.

1978: With a 10-8 victory over the Pirates, the Phillies win their third straight N.L. East title.

1980: Only 1,754 fans see the Mets beat the Pirates 3-1. It was the smallest crowd in Shea Stadium history.

1984: The Yankees Don Mattingly wins the only batting title of his 14-year career.

1984: The Angels Mike Witt pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Rangers. The Angels only run was unearned.

1989: The Blue Jays clinch the A.L. East with a 4-3 win over the Orioles at the SkyDome. The game was the final Game of the Week televised by NBC after 43 years. The game was the 981st weekly game broadcasted by NBC, which started that tradition in 1947.

1990: The White Sox defeat the Mariners 2-1 in the final game at old Comiskey Park.

1990: The Royals Frank White plays his final game after 18 years with the Royals. Along with George Brett, the teammates played in 1,914 games together, setting an A.L. record.

1992: The Royals George Brett records his 3,000th hit.

1995: The Indians Albert Belle becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 50 home runs and 50 doubles in the same season.

1998: Dan Quisenberry, the Royals relief pitcher who became the first to record 40 saves in 1983, dies of brain cancer at age 45.

1999: The Mets Rey Ordonez plays his 96th straight game without an error, breaking the record for shortstops.

1999: The Giants lose to the Dodgers 9-4 in the final game at Candlestick Park. 61,389 fans attend the game, the most in the stadium's history.

2001: The Rockies Todd Helton becomes the first player in M.L. history to record back to back seasons of 100 extra base hits.

2004: The Yankees beat the Twins 6-4 to clinch their seventh straight A.L. East title. They are also the fourth team in M.L. history to have three straight 100-win seasons.

2005: The Mariners ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in M.L. history to record 200 hits in his first five seasons.

2007: The Phillies clinch their first N.L. East title in 14 years with a 6-1 win over the Nationals. The Mets lost the division by losing six of their last seven games. The Mets had a seven game lead with 17 games to play.

2008: The White Sox defeat the Twins 1-0 in a one game tiebreaker for the A.L. Central title. They became the first team in M.L. history to defeat three different teams in three days. Before beating the Twins, they beat the Indians and Tigers.

2009: With a 10-3 win over the Astros, the Phillies win their third straight N.L. East title.

2012: With a 6-2 win over the Mets, the Braves win their 23rd straight game started by pitcher Kris Medlen, breaking a M.L. record.

2013: The Rays defeat the Rangers 5-2 in a one game tiebreaker to win the second A.L. Wild Card.
