1890: By scores of 10-9, 3-2, and 8-4, the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later Dodgers) win all three games against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (later Pirates) in the first triple-header in M.L. history.

1906: The A's beat the Red Sox 4-1 in 24 innings, the longest game in A.L. history.

1909: In the Giants 9-6 win over the Cardinals, Bill O'Hara becomes the first player in M.L. history to steal two bases in one inning.

1945: In the Phillies 8-3 win over the Braves, Vince DiMaggio ties a M.L. record with his fourth grand slam of the season.

1958: In a 1-0 Cardinals win over the Reds, Vinegar Bend Mizell issues nine walks, setting a N.L. record in a shutout.

1963: In the second inning of the Cardinals 7-3 win over the Phillies, Curt Simmons becomes the last pitcher in M.L. history to steal home.

1975: Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 200 strikeouts for eight straight seasons.

1998: Mark McGwire homers twice in the Cardinals 7-1 win over the Marlins, raising his total to 56 on the year, breaking Hack Wilson's N.L. record.

2007: The Red Sox Clay Buchholz pitches a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Orioles.

2014: The Phillies pitch a combined no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Braves. Cole Hamels worked the first six innings, with relievers Jake Diekman, Ken Giles, and Jonathan Papelbon finishing the game.
 
September 2nd:

1955: In the Cubs 12-2 win over the Cardinals, Ernie Banks hits his 40th home run, breaking the record for shortstops.

1962: Stan Musial records his 3,516th career hit, moving him past Tris Speaker for second on the all time list.

1965: Ernie Banks hit his 400th career home run.

1965: With the team moving to Anaheim the next season, Angels owner Gene Autry announces the team will be known as the California Angels.

1973: The Tigers fire manager Billy Martin.

1975: During the Giants 7-3 win over the Dodgers, Johnny LeMaster becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit an inside the park home run in his first at bat.

1986: In the Astros 8-7, 18 inning win over the Cubs, the two teams combine to use a M.L. record 53 innings.

1987: During the Astros 10-1 win over the Cubs, Kevin Bass becomes the first player in N.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate twice in a season.

1990: The Blue Jays Dave Steib pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Indians. It was the ninth no-hitter of the season, setting a M.L. record.

1993: The Rockies break the N.L. single season attendance record, with 3,617,863 fans at Mile High Stadium in the team's first 62 home games.

1999: Cal Ripken, Jr. hits his 400th home run.
 
September 3rd:

1880: The first baseball game played at night takes place at Strawberry Hill, on the shores of Nantasket Beach, Massachusetts. The teams are made up of employees from retail competitors Jordan Marsh and R.H. White. The field is lit by lights placed on three towers made by the Northern Electric Light Company. The game ends in a 16-16 tie, because the players needed to catch the last ferry back to Boston.

1894: The Pirates 22-1 win over the Senators marks the first of a record 3,582 managerial wins for Connie Mack.

1917: Grover Cleveland Alexander pitches complete games in both ends of a doubleheader sweep of the Phillies over the Dodgers.

1928: Ty Cobb records the last of his 4,191 career hits, a double off Bump Hadley in the A's 6-1 loss to the Senators.

1947: The A's Bill McCahan pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Senators.

1957: With the Braves 8-0 victory over the Cubs, Warren Spahn records his 41st shutout, breaking the N.L. record for left handers.

1961: Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris become the first pair of teammates to hit 50 home runs in a season.

1977: Japanese star Sadaharu Oh hits his 756th career home run, passing Hank Aaron for the most in professional baseball.

1985: The Angels Reggie Jackson becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 100 home runs for three different teams. He also hit 269 with the A's and 144 with the Yankees.

1990: In the White Sox 4-2 win over the Royals, Bobby Thigpen records his 47th save of the season, breaking the M.L. record.

2001: The Cardinals Bud Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Padres.

2002: In the Rangers 7-1 win over the Orioles, Joaquin Benoit pitches seven inning of one hit baseball, setting the record for the longest save in M.L. history.

2007: The Mets Pedro Martinez records his 3,000th strikeout.

2008: Though attendance is announced as 11,211, fewer than 600 fans actually show up at Miami's Dolphins Stadium to see the Marlins defeat the Braves 5-3.

2013: With a 4-3 win over the Brewers, the Pirates assure themselves of their first non-losing season since 1992.

1923: The Yankees Sam Jones pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the A's.

1927: In the Pirates 8-4 win over the Reds, Lloyd and Paul Waner becomes the first brother in M.L. history to homer in the same game.

1928: The Braves start a M.L. record streak of nine straight doubleheaders.

1941: With a 6-3 win over the Red Sox, the Yankees clinch their third straight A.L. title.

1986: Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg dies at age 75.

1993: The Yankees Jim Abbott pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Indians.

1993: In a 6-5 loss to the Reds, the Phillies set a new N.L. record by not being shutout in 151 straight games.

1998: With an 11-6 win over the White Sox, the Yankees win their 100th game, the earliest in a season anyone had done so in M.L. history.

1999: The Reds set a N.L. record with nine home runs in a 22-3 win over the Phillies.

2002: Scott Hatteberg's walk-off home run gives the A's a 12-11 win over the Royals, extending their winning streak to an A.L. record 20 games.

2010: In the Twins 12-4 win over the Rangers, Jim Thome homers twice, giving him 584 and passing Mark McGwire for eighth on the all time list.

1908: George Rucker of the Brooklyn Superbas pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Boston Doves (later Braves).

1914: While pitching a shutout for the Providence Grays in a 9-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, Babe Ruth hits his first professional home run.

1936: Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski is born in Wheeling, West Virginia.

1971: Making his M.L. debut, Astros pitcher J.R. Richard throws a complete game, and sets a M.L. record for strikeouts in a debut with 15, leading Houston to a 5-3 win over the Giants.

1980: Brewers manager George Bamberger announces he will resign after the next day's game.

1995: Cal Ripken, Jr. ties Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games played. When the game becomes official, he receives a standing ovation from the crowd at Camden Yards.

1998: Mark McGwire joins Babe Ruth and Roger Maris as the only players to hit 60 home runs in a season. He becomes the quickest of the three to do so.

2007: Bob Sheppard, the Yankees P.A. announcer since 1951, works his final game.

2014: The Rangers announce manager Ron Washington resigned due to a personal matter.
 
September 6th:

1905: The White Sox Frank Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 15-0 win over the Tigers. The score marks the most lopsided no-hitter in M.L. history.

1912: The Giants Jeff Tesreau pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Phillies.

1943: In the A's 11-4 loss to the Yankees, 16-year old Carl Scheib pitches two-thirds of an inning, becoming the youngest player to appear in a game in A.L. history.

1973: The Pirates fire manager Bill Virdon and replace him with Danny Murtaugh, who Virdon replaced in Pittsburgh in 1972.

1981: The Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela ties the N.L. rookie record with his seventh shutout in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

1981: The Yankees fire manager Gene Michael and replace him with Bob Lemon.

1995: Cal Ripken Jr. breaks Lou Gehrig's record by playing in his 2,131st straight game. When the game becomes official, the fans give Ripken a 22-minute ovation and he takes a victory lap around the field. (Personal note: My favorite non-Braves baseball moment).

1996: Brett Butler returns to the Dodgers after being away four months due to surgery for throat cancer. He scores the winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Pirates.

2001: Barry Bonds joins Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa as the only players to hit 60 home runs in a season.

2002: With a 6-0 loss to the Twins, the A's A.L. record 20-game winning streak ends, one shy of the M.L. record set by the 1935 Cubs.

2006: The Marlins Anibal Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

1923: The Red Sox Howard Ehmke pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

1962: With four steals in the Dodgers 10-1 loss to the Pirates, Maury Wills raises his total to 82, breaking the modern N.L. record.

1973: The Rangers fire manager Whitey Herzog and replace him with Billy Martin.

1975: With an 8-4 win over the Giants, the Reds clinch the N.L. West title, making them the earliest to win a division since the format began in 1969.

1984: While pitching a one-hitter against the Cubs, a strikeout of Ron Cey gives Dwight Gooden 228 for the season, breaking the N.L. rookie record.

1984: Hall of Famer Joe Cronin dies at age 77.

1993: The Cardinals Mark Whiten hits four home runs in a doubleheader nightcap against the Reds.

1998: In the first inning against the Cubs, Mark McGwire hits his 61st home run of the season, tying Roger Maris' record.

2008: With an 11-6 loss to the Giants, the Pirates assure themselves of their 16th straight losing season, tying the record of the 1933-48 Phillies for the longest such streak in professional sports.

2009: With a loss to the Cubs, the Pirates set a new record by assuring a 17th straight losing season.

2010: In a 4-2 Brewers win over the Cardinals, Trevor Hoffman records his 600th save.
 
September 8th:

1916: In front of the smallest crowd in A.L. history, the A's Wally Schang becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. Only 23 fans sat through the rain at Philadelphia's Shibe Park to see it.

1925: Babe Ruth hits his 300th home run.

1955: The Dodgers clinch the N.L. title with a 10-2 win over the Braves, marking the earliest date a pennant was clinched.

1957: At the Polo Grounds, the Giants defeat the Dodgers 3-2 in their final game against each other before they move to California the next season.

1963: In the Braves 3-2 win over the Phillies, Warren Spahn ties Christy Mathewson's record of 13 seasons of 20 or more wins.

1980: Cubs pitcher Fergie Jenkins is suspended by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn as a result of his drug arrest the prior month. The suspension will last two weeks after an independent arbiter reinstates him.

1985: With two hits against the Cubs, Pete Rose ties Ty Cobb's all time record of 4,191 hits.

1993: The Astros Daryl Kile pitches a no-hitter in a 7-1 win over the Mets.

1995: The Indians clinch the A.L. Central with a 3-2 win over the Orioles.

1996: Mets catcher Todd Hundley joins Mickey Mantle as the only switch-hitters to hit 40 home runs in a season.

1996: Gary Sheffield hits the 4,459th home run of the season around the majors, breaking the record set in 1987.

1998: In the fourth inning off the Cubs Steve Trachsel, Mark McGwire hits his 62nd home run of the season, breaking Roger Maris' record.

2002: Rafael Palmerio extends the Rangers streak of hitting a home run to a M.L. record 26 straight games.

2008: The Red Sox play in front of a sellout crowd for the 456th straight time, breaking the M.L. record held by the Indians.

2008: The Tigers Gary Sheffield hits the 250,000th home run in M.L. history.

2012: The Cubs Darwin Barney plays his 124th straight game without an error, breaking the N.L. record for second basemen.

1960: Ted Williams hits his 511th career home run, tying him with Mel Ott for third on the all time list.

1965: Sandy Koufax pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Cubs. It was his fourth no-hit game.

1968: Joe Gordon is hired to be the manager of the new expansion team in Kansas City.

1977: Alan Trammel and Lou Whitaker make their M.L. debuts with the Tigers against the Red Sox. Together, they would set a M.L. record by playing together for 19 seasons as the team's double play combo.

1988: In what becomes his final M.L. game, Bruce Sutter records his 300th save in the Braves 5-4, 11 inning over the Padres.

1992: Robin Yount records his 3,000th hit.

1992: The owners name Brewers owner Bud Selig to be interim commissioner. It would be six years before Selig is officially named commissioner.

1997: Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn dies at age 70.

1997: With two RBI's in an 8-6 loss to the Yankees, Nomar Garciaparra raises his total to 86 for the season, breaking the M.L. record for rookies.

1998: The Yankees clinch the A.L. East with a 7-5 win over the Red Sox.

2002: Randy Johnson record his fifth straight season of 300 strikeouts, breaking his own M.L. record. It was also his sixth 300-strikeout season, tying Nolan Ryan's record.

2002: The Braves clinch their eighth straight N.L. East title.

2004: The Royals Joe Randa becomes the first player in A.L. history to collect six hits and scores six runs, doing so in a 26-5 win over the Tigers.
 
September 10th:

1881: Roger Connor of the Troy Trojans hits the first grand slam in M.L history, giving the team a 7-4 win over the Worcester Ruby Legs.

1919: The Indians Ray Caldwell pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Yankees.

1963: Hall of Famer Randy Johnson is born in Walnut Creek, California.

1967: The White Sox Joe Horlen pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Tigers.

1974: In the Cardinals 8-2 loss to the Phillies, Maury Wills steals his 104th and 105th stolen bases, breaking Lou Brock's single season record.

1980: In the Expos 4-2 win over the Cubs, Bill Gullickson breaks the M.L. rookie record with 18 strikeouts.

2000: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson records his 3,000th strikeout.

2008: With a 4-2 win over the Yankees, the Angels clinch the A.L. West.

1915: Eddie Plank of the Federal League's St. Louis Terriers records his 300th victory in a 12-5 win over the Newark Peppers.

1918: In Game 6, the Red Sox defeat the Cubs 2-1 to win the World Series. It was the earliest conclusion in series history. The season was shortened due to World War I.

1928: Ty Cobb makes his final M.L appearance.

1956: In the Reds 11-5 win over the Giants, Frank Robinson ties the N.L rookie record with his 38th home run of the season.

1966: Braves pitcher Pat Jarvis is the first of Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts.

1985: Pete Rose records his 4,192nd career hit, breaking Ty Cobb's all time record.

1991: The Braves Kent Mercker, Mark Wohlers, and Alejandro Pena pitch the first combined no-hitter in N.L. history in a 1-0
win over the Padres.

1998: With an 8-2 defeat to the Braves, the Marlins become the first defending champion to lose 100 games.

1999: The Twins Eric Milton pitched a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Angels.

2001: Terrorists hijack airplanes and strike the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. Another hijacked plane is crashed in Pennsylvania. All M.L. games scheduled are cancelled.

2008: Albert Pujols becomes the only player in M.L. history to drive in 100 runs in his first eight seasons.

2010: Jim Thome hits his 587th career home run, passing Frank Robinson for eighth in the all time list.
 
September 13th:

1883: Cleveland's Bill Daily pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the A's. Daily had only one hand due to a gun accident earlier in his life.

1925: Dazzy Vance of the Brooklyn Robins pitches a no-hitter in a 10-1 win over the Phillies.

1932: The Yankees clinch the A.L. Pennant with a 9-3 win over the Indians.

1936: The Indians Bob Feller sets an A.L. Record with 17 strikeouts in a 5-2 win over the A's.

1946: The only inside the park home run of Ted Williams gives the Red Sox a 1-0 win over the Indians and the A.L. Pennant.

1965: Willie Mays hits his 500th career home run.

1971: Frank Robinson hits his 500th career home run.

1983: In a 4-3 win over the Angels, the Royals Dan Quisenberry records his 39th save, breaking the M.L. Record.

1989: Succeeding the late Bart Giamatti, Fay Vincent is named the eighth commissioner of baseball.

1995: The Tigers Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammel make their 1,915th joint appearance together, breaking the M.L. Record.

1998: With two homers in the Cubs 11-10 win over the Brewers, Sammy Sosa joins Mark McGwire with 62 home runs.

2001: Two days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, MLB announces all games are postponed until September 17th. The games missed this week will be made up the week after the scheduled end of the season.

2002: Mike Bordick breaks the AL record of his former teammate Cal Ripken Jr by playing in his 96th straight game at shortstop without committing an error.

2007: After 13 years, Terry Ryan announces his resignation as Twins GM.

2009: Ichrio Suzuki becomes the first player in ML history with 200 hits in nine straight seasons.

2011: Mariano Rivera records his 600th save.

1869: Hall of Famer Kid Nichols is born in Madison, Wisconsin.

1942: With a victory over the Indians, the Yankees clinch the AL pennant.

1955: In the Indians 3-2 win over the Senators, Herb Score raises his strikeout total to 227, breaking the ML rookie record.

1968: In the Tigers 5-4 win over the A's, Denny McLain records his 30th victory of the season, the first to do since Dizzy Dean in 1934.

1969: With a 7-3 win over the Indians, the Orioles clinch the first AL East title.

1986: Usually a catcher, the Giants Bob Brenley ties a ML record at third base with four errors in one inning. However, he homers twice, including a walk-off in the Giants 7-6 win over the Braves.

1987: During the Orioles 18-3 loss to the Blue Jays, manager Cal Ripken Sr replaces his son with Ron Washington at shortstop, ending Cal Ripken Jr's record streak of 8,243 straight innings at that position.

1990: The Mariners Ken Griffey Sr and Ken Griffey Jr become the first father and son to hit back to back home runs in ML history, doing so against the Angels.

1994: Because of the strike, 26 of the 28 owners vote to cancel the rest of the season, making baseball the first sport to lose a postseason due to labor issues.

1998: The Braves win the NL East with a 4-2 victory over the Phillies, their seventh straight division title.

2002: Barry Bonds records his 11th season of 100 RBIs, tying Hank Aaron's NL record.

2008: The Cubs Carlos Zambrano pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Astros at Mikwaukee's Miller Park. The Astros were away from their home in Houston due to Hurricane Ike.

2011: With a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals, the Pirates assure themselves of their 19th straight losing season, an American professional sports record.
 
September 15th:

1938: Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry is born in Williamston, North Carolina.

1946: The doubleheader nightcap at Ebbets Field between the Cubs and Dodgers is stopped and postponed after the fifth inning due to a swarm of gnats.

1960: Willie Mays ties a ML record with three triples in the Giants 8-6 win over the Phillies.

1968: The Cardinals clinch the NL pennant with a 7-4 win over the Astros.

1969: In the Cardinals 4-3 loss to the Mets, Steve Carlton strikes out 19 batters to set a ML record for a nine inning game.

1971: With a 3-2 win over the White Sox and the Royals 6-2 loss to the Angels, the A's win the AL West, the franchise's first title since Connie Mack managed the Philadelphia team in 1931.

1977: The Royals clinch the AL West title.

1995: In the Cardinals 7-6 loss to the Dodgers, Ozzie Smith sets a ML record by taking part in his 1,554th double play.

2002: The Twins clinch the AL Central title with a 5-0 win over the Indians, assuring their first postseason since 1991.

2003: Rafael Palmerio joins Jimmie Foxx as the only players in ML history with nine straight seasons of 35 home runs and 100 RBIs.

2006: The Devil Rays join the 1936-45 Phillies as the only teams in ML history to lose 90 game for nine straight seasons.

2008: The Brewers fire Ned Yost and name third base coach Dale Sveum manager.

2012: During the Marlins 6-4 win over the Reds, Jose Reyes is charged with unofficially the 500,000th error in ML history.

1914: The Yankees name 23 year old shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh as their manager, replacing Frank Chance.

1940: In the Browns 16-4 win over the Yankees, Johnny Lucadello becomes the first player to hit his first two ML home runs from different sides of the plate.

1942: The Phillies become the first team in ML history to record five straight seasons of 100 losses.

1955: Hall of Famer Robin Yount is born in Danville, Illinois.

1960: The Braves Warren Spahn pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Phillies.

1965: In front of just 1,247 fans at Fenway Park, Dave Morehead, who would lead the league with 18 losses, pitches a no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the Indians. On that same day, the Red Sox, who would finish with 100 losses, fire GM Pinky Higgins.

1969: The Red Sox fire manager Dick Williams.

1972: Mike Schmidt hits the first of his 548 career home runs.

1972: In the Cubs 18-5 win over the Mets, Glen Beckert sets a new ML record by leaving 12 runners on base.

1988: The Reds Tom Browning pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers.

1993: Dave Winfield records his 3,000th hit.

1996: Paul Molitor records his 3,000th hit.

2002: The Diamondbacks Curt Schilling joins Randy Johnson as the first teammates to both strikeout 300 batters in the same season.

2007: The White Sox Jim Thome hits a two run walk-off home run to beat the Angels 9-7. It was Thome's 500th home run.

1903: In a game shortened due to darkness, the Boston Americans defeat the Cleveland Naps 4-3 to clinch the first AL pennant.

1912: Casey Stengel makes his ML debut, collecting four hits, two stolen bases, and drives in two runs for the Dodgers against the Pirates.

1937: Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda is born in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

1941: Stan Musial makes his ML debut, going 2-4 for the Cardinals against the Braves.

1953: The Reds fire manager Rogers Hornsby.

1963: Sandy Koufax leads the Dodgers to a 4-0 win over the Cardinals. It was his name 11th shutout of the season, setting a new NL record and tying Grover Cleveland Alexander's 1916 ML mark.

2001: Six days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, MLB returns to play on the field. Before the Cardinals game, Jack Buck reads We Shall Overcome and the singing of God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch begins.

2004: Barry Bonds hits his 700th home run.

2010: Dodgers manager Joe Torre announces he will retire at season's end.

1949: The Pirates Ralph Kiner becomes the first player in NL history to hit 50 home runs in two different seasons.

1955: In the Cubs 6-5 loss to the Cardinals, Ernie Banks sets a ML record with his fifth grand slam of the season.

1993: The Braves Tom Glavine become the first NL pitcher since Fergie Jenkins (1971-73) to record three straight seasons of 20 wins.

1998: Alex Rodriguez becomes the third player, first infielder, to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season.

2001: In the Cardinals 8-2 win over the Brewers, Albert Pujols drives in three runs, giving him 120 RBIs to break the NL rookie record.

2007: The Devil Rays become the first team in ML history to lose 90 games for ten straight seasons.
