September 23rd:

1908: On what would have been a run-scoring hit to give the Giants a 2-1 win over the Cubs, Fred Merkle fails to touch second base. He is called out at home and the game is ruled a tie. "Merkle's Boner" would cost the Giants the pennant.

1955: A 3-2 win in a doubleheader nightcap over the Red Sox clinches the AL pennant for the Yankees.

1956: Ozzie Virgil becomes the first Dominican to play in the majors.

1957: Hank Aaron's 11th inning home run gives the Braves a 4-2 win over the Cardinals and the NL pennant.

1973: With a 10-5 win over the White Sox, the A's clinch their third straight AL West title.

1979: Lou Brock steals the last of his 938 career bases.

1983: With a 6-2 victory over the Phillies, the team he was traded from, the Cardinals Steve Carlton wins his 300th game.

1984: In the Tigers 4-1 win over the Yankees, Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager to win 100 games in a seasons in both leagues. His Reds won 102 in 1976.

1988: The A's Jose Canseco becomes the fits player in ML history with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a season.

1992: The Padres Bip Roberts ties a NL record with ten straight hits.

1996: With an 8-2 win over the Expos, the Braves clinch the NL East. They become the first team in NL history to win five straight division titles.

1997: The Marlins clinch their first postseason berth.

2000: The Devil Rays Fred McGriff joins Frank Robinson as the only players to hit 200 home runs in both leagues.

2006: Barry Bonds hits his 734th home run, breaking Hank Aaron's NL record.

2007: The Nationals beat the Phillies 5-3 in the last baseball game played at RFK Stadium.

2009: After signing a one year contract extension, Braves manager Bobby Cox announces he will retire after the 2010 season.

2010: Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in ML history with ten straight seasons of 200 hits.

2011: Three division titles are clinched: The Brewers clinch the NL central with a 4-1 win over the Marlins. The Rangers take the AL West with a 5-3 win over the Mariners. The Diamondbacks 3-1 win over the Giants gives them the NL West.

2013: With their 2-1 win over the Cubs and the Nationals loss to the Cardinals, the Pirates clinch the first postseason berth since 1992.

2014: The Diamondbacks name Dave Stewart general manager.
 
September 25th:

1929: During the fifth inning of the Yankees/Red Sox game at Fenway, the players are summoned to home plate where they are told a telegram arrives announcing the death of Yankees manager Miller Huggins. Umpire Bill McGowan requests a moment of silence as the crowd stands and flags are lowered.

1930: Joe McCarthy resigns as Cubs manager and is replaced by Rogers Hornsby.

1941: The Dodgers clinch their first pennant in 21 years.

1956: The Dodgers Sal Magile pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Phillies.

1960: The Yankees clinch the AL pennant with a 4-3 win over the Red Sox.

1965: At the alleged age of 60, Satchel Paige becomes the oldest player in ML history to appear in a game. He pitches three shutout innings as the starter in the A's 5-2 win over the Red Sox.

1968: In his final game, Mickey Mantle goes 1-3 and walks in his final at bat in the Yankees 3-0 loss to the Indians.

1974: In a first of its kind operation, Dr. Frank Jobe transplants a tendon from the wrist of Yankees pitcher Tommy John to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The surgery, which becomes known as "Tommy John Surgery", allows John to win 164 more games in his career.

1979: With a 4-1 win over the Royals, the Angels clinch their first AL West title.

1980: In a 5-3 loss to the Reds, Padres teammates Ozzie Smith and Jerry Mumphrey steal their 50th base. With Gene Richard, the Padres become the first team in ML history to have three players with 50 stolen bases each.

1986: The Astros Mike Scott pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants. The Astros also clinched the NL West title.

1997: The Astros clinch the NL Central with a 9-1 win over the Cubs.

1998: With a 6-1 victory over the Devil Rays, the Yankees win their 112th game of the season, breaking the AL record.

2003: The Cubs Sammy Sosa becomes the first player in NL history with nine straight seasons with 100 RBIs.

2003: The Blue Jays Carlos Delgado becomes the 15th player in ML history to hit four home runs in a game.

2008: The Dodgers defeat the Diamondbacks 12-3 to clinch the NL West.

2010: The Braves defeat the Nationals 5-0 for Bobby Cox's 2,500th managerial win.

2014: In his final game at Yankee Stadium, Derek Jeter hits a walk-off RBI single to give the Yankees a 6-5 win over the Orioles.
 
September 27th:

1905: Bill Dinneen of the Boston Pilgrims pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the White Sox.

1914: Cleveland's Nap LaJoie records his 3,000th hit.

1920: In an article that appears in Philadelphia's North American, gambler Bill Maharg and former ML pitcher Billy Burns offered eight White Sox players $100,000 to throw the 1919 World Series. It would become known as the "Black Sox Scandal".

1930: In a 13-8 win over the Reds, the Cubs Hack Wilson hits his 55th and 56th home runs of the season, setting a NL record that would stand until Mark McGwire in 1998.

1935: With a win over the Cardinals, their 21st straight, the Cubs clinch the NL pennant.

1938: Lou Gehrig hits the last of his 493 career home runs.

1940: The Tigers clinch the AL pennant with a 2-0 win over the Indians.

1942: With a doubleheader sweep over the Cubs, the Cardinals clinch the NL pennant.

1952: In an 11-3 win over the Dodgers, the Braves Eddie Mathews becomes the first rookie in ML history to hit three home runs in a game. It also turned out to be the teams final win before relocating from Boston to Milwaukee.

1953: The Browns lose in 11 innings 2-1 to the White Sox in their final game in St. Louis. The team moves to Baltimore for the next season and becomes the Orioles.

1954: Willie Mays is a guest on the first ever episode of NBC's The Tonight Show.

1964: In the final game at Colt Stadium, the Houston Colt .45s defeat the Dodgers in 12 innings 1-0. The team moves into the Astrodome the next season and becomes the Astros.

1973: The Angels Nolan Ryan strikes out 16 batters in an 11 inning, 5-4 win over the Twins, raising his total to 383 for the season to break Sandy Koufax's ML record.

1989: Both Bay Area teams clinch divisional titles. The Giants win the NL West after the Padres loss to the Reds while the A's take the AL West with a 5-0 victory over the Rangers.

1993: In a 7-3 win over the Dodgers, the Cubs Randy Myers becomes the first pitcher in NL history to record 50 saves in a season.

1993: The White Sox clinch the AL West with a 4-2 win over the Mariners.

1993: The Blue Jays clinch their third straight AL East title with a 2-0 win over the Brewers.

1996: The Orioles Roberto Alomar spits in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck, earning him a five game suspension for the incident.

1998: In a 6-3 Cardinals win over the Expos on the season's last day, Mark McGwire hits his 69th and 70th home runs of the season.

1998: In the Padres 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks, Trevor Hoffman sets a NL record with his 53rd save.

1999: The Tigers defeat the Royals 8-2 in the final game at Tiger Stadium.

2000: With Tommy Lasorda managing, Team USA upsets Cuba 4-0 to win the Gold Medal at the Sydney Olympics.

2002: In a 3-1 win over the Mets, the Braves John Smoltz sets a NL record with his 54th save of the season.

2003: The Braves Javy Lopez hits his 42nd home run of the season, breaking Todd Hundley's ML record for catchers set back in 1996.

2003: The Cubs Sammy Sosa sets a NL record with his sixth straight season of 40 home runs.

2005: The Braves clinch the NL East for their 14th straight division title.

2010: The Phillies clinch their fourth straight NL East title with an 8-0 win over the Nationals.
 
September 28th:

1919: The Giants defeat the Phillies 6-1 in a game that takes just 51 minutes, the quickest nine inning game in ML history.

1920: The eight players from White Sox accused of throwing the 1919 World Series are indicted by a grand jury.

1923: The Yankees set an AL record with 30 hits in a 24-4 win over the Red Sox.

1930: Nine years after his last pitching appearance, Babe Ruth pitches a complete game in the Yankees 9-3 win over the Red Sox.

1941: On the last day of the regular season and with an average of .399955, which would have been rounded up to .400, Ted Williams plays in a doubleheader against the A's.

1952: In their final game representing Boston, the Braves play to a 12-inning 5-5 tie against the Dodgers. Game was called due to darkness.

1953: The AL owners unanimously vote to allow the Browns to leave St. Louis for Baltimore. The team becomes the Orioles the next season.

1960: In his final at bat, Ted Williams hits a home run off the Orioles Jacob Fischer.

1962: In the first matchup of 100 loss teams, the 58-101 Cubs defeat the 39-118 Mets in front of 595 fans at Wrigley Field.

1974: The Angels Nolan Ryan pitches his third no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Twins.

1976: The Giants John Montefusco pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Braves.

1983: With a 13-6 win over the Cubs, The Phillies clinch the NL East.

1988: In his last regular season game, Orel Hershisher pitches ten shutout innings, extending his streak to 59 innings, breaking Don Drysdale's ML record.

1988: Jim Abbott pitches a complete game to lead Team USA to a 5-3 win over Japan in the Gold Medal game at the Seoul Olympics.

1997: Tony Gwynn ties Honus Wagner's record with his eighth NL batting title. It was also his fourth straight, becoming the first to do so since Rogers Hornsby's six straight from 1920-1925.

1998: The Cubs defeat the Giants 5-3 in a one game playoff for the NL Wild Card.

2000: The Brewers lose to the Reds 8-1 in the final game at County Stadium.

2001: The Rangers Alex Rodriguez becomes the first shortstop to hit 50 home runs in a season.

2003: The Phillies lose to the Braves 5-2 in the final game at Veterans Stadium.

2005: The Padres win the NL West.

2008: At age 39, the Yankees Mike Messina becomes the oldest pitcher in ML history to win 20 games for the first time.

2009: With an 11-0 win over the Rangers, the Angels win the AL West.

2011: The final day of the regular season becomes one of the most memorable days in ML history. In the NL, the feat the Astros and with the Braves loss to the Phillies, St. Louis, after trailing Atlanta by 10 1/2 games, win the Wild Card. In the AL, the Red Sox lose to the Orioles. Meanwhile, the Rays rally from 7-0 down to the Yankees, tie the game in the ninth on a two out homer by Dan Johnson, then win the game in the 12th inning on a walk-off homer by Evan Longoria. It completed the Rays rally from nine games behind the Red Sox at the beginning of the month to win the Wild Card.

2011: The Marlins introduces Ozzie Guillen as their new manager.
 
September 29th:

1908: The White Sox Ed Walsh wins both games of a doubleheader, beating the Red Sox by scores of 5-1 and 2-0.

1915: The Phillies defeat the Braves 5-0 to win the NL pennant.

1934: Babe Ruth hits the last of his 659 home runs with The Yankees.

1943: The Browns Vern Stephens becomes the first player in ML history to hit two extra inning home runs in the same game. He hit a solo shot in the 11th, then after the Red Sox tied the game in the bottom half, he wins the game 4-3 with another solo homer in the 13th inning.

1954: In the Giants 5-2 win over the Indians in Game 1 of the World Series, Willie Mays makes his famous over the shoulder catch to rob Vic Wertz of an extra base hit.

1959: The Dodgers rally to defeat the Braves 6-5, taking the first two games of a best of three playoff and the NL pennant.

1963: Stan Musial collects two hits in his final game, helping the Cardinals defeat the Reds 3-2. He finishes his 22 year career with 3,630 hits: 1,851 at home, 1,815 on the road.

1968: After the A's lose to the Twins 4-3 on the season's last day, owner Charley Finley fires manager Bob Kennedy.

1973: In the Braves 7-0 win over the Astros, Hank Aaron hits his 40th home run. He joins Darrell Evans and Davey Johnson as the first trio of teammates to do so in the same season.

1975: Hall of Famer Casey Stengel dies at age 85.

1976: The Dodgers name Tommy Lasorda to replace Walter Alston as manager.

1979: The Dodgers Manny Mota sets a ML record with his 146th career pinch hit.

1983: The A's Mike Warren pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the White Sox.

1986: In thhis first game in which siblings start against each other, Greg Maddux and the Cubs beat older brother Mike and the Phillies 6-3.

1987: The Yankees Don Mattingly sets a ML record with his sixth grand slam of the season.

1993: George Brett plays in his final ML game.

2001: Ichiro Suzuki records his 234th hit, breaking the ML rookie record set in 1911 by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.

2004: In the Braves 6-3 victory over the Mets, Bobby Cox becomes the ninth manager in ML history to win 2,000 games.

2004: MLB announces the Expos will relocate to Washington for the 2005 season. Hours after the announcement, the Expos lose 9-1 to the Marlins in the final game in Montreal.

2005: After nearly blowing what was a 15 game lead over the Indians on August 1st, the White Sox clinch The AL Central with a 4-2 win over the Tigers.

2013: The Rangers and Rays both win, forcing a one game playoff between the two teams for a berth in the AL Wild Card Game.
 
September 30th:

1927: Babe Ruth hits his 60th home run of the season.

1933: In the Cubs 12-2 win over the Cardinals, Babe Herman becomes the first player to hit for the cycle three times in his career.

1945: With a 6-3 win over the Browns, the Tigers clinch the AL pennant.

1947: The Dodgers Ralph Branca becomes the youngest pitcher to start a World Series opener at 21 years old. Brooklyn would lose 5-1 to the Yankees.

1951: After the Giants beat the Braves, the Dodgers rally to defeat the Phillies in 14 innings to force a best of three playoff series between the New York rivals for the NL pennant.

1961: The Angels beat the Indians 11-6 for their 70th win, the most for an expansion team.

1962: With a 5-1 defeat to the Cubs, the Mets finish the season with a century record 120 losses.

1969: With a 3-2 win over the Reds, the Braves win the first NL West title.

1972: Roberto Clemente records his 3,000th hit. It turned out to be his last, as he was killed in a plane crash on New Year's Eve delivering relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

1973: The Yankees lose to the Tigers if their last game at Yankee Stadium before the ballpark undergoes a two year renovation. They would play home games at Shea Stadium for the next two seasons.

1973: The Red Sox fire manager Eddie Kasko.

1978: The Phillies clinch their third straight NL East title with a 10-8 win over the Pirates.

1984: The Angels Mike Witt pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Rangers.

1989: The Blue Jays clinch the AL East title with a 4-3 win over the Orioles. It was the final Game of the Weekk broadcasted by NBC, ending a 43 year run of games on the network.

1990: The White Sox beat the Mariners 2-1 in the final game at old Comiskey Park.

1992: George Brett records his 3,000th hit.

1995: The Indians Albert Belle becomes the first player in ML history to hit 50 home runs and 50 doubles in the same season.

1999: The Giants lose to the Dodgers 9-4 in the final game at Candlestick Park.

2004: The Yankees beat the Twins 6-4 to win their seventh straight AL East title.

2007: The Phillies beat the Nationals to win the NL East title. The passed the Mets, who blew a seven game lead they had with 17 games left to play.

2007: With a victory over the Diamondbacks, the Rockies force a one game playoff against the Padres for the NL Wild Card.

2008: In a one game playoff, the White Sox defeat the Twins 1-0 for the AL Central title. They became the first team to beat three teams in three different days. They beat the Indians on the last scheduled day of the regular season, then the Tigers in a make up game necessary due to the playoff race.

2009: The Phillies clinch their third straight NL East title win a 10-3 win over the Astros.

2011: After their historic collapse in the AL Wild Card race, the Red Sox decline to pick up the option on manager Terry Francona's contract.

2012: With a 6-2 win over the Mets, the Braves win a game started by Kris Medlen for the 23rd straight time, tying a ML record.

2013: The Rays beat the Rangers 5-2 in a one game playoff for the second AL Wild Card spot.
