Tony Gwynn Dies at 54

Even his 3000th hit was in Montreal with a near-empty stadium. So wish he could have done it in Atlanta. Funny, his highest career batting average was against Smoltz at .445 or thereabouts. Third highest was against Maddux. Stepped it up against the greatest pitchers too. Ha!

Exactly plus I thought MLB did a terrible job with his farewell tour by talking up blowing hard on Cal Jr the entire year. During that time Gwynn was hardly talked about. RIP Mr Gwynn!

There's this Maddux quote going around that has him say that hitters can see the spin, adjust to up and down location, adjust to in and out location, but pretty much nobody can discern the difference between, say, 55, 65 and 75 MPH. If you can change speeds effectively, you're golden, because no one can really notice speed changes at that level.

Except, Maddux said, "that ****er Tony Gwynn."

I just got off work and saw the news. I'm shocked and saddened. As so many others have said, we lost perhaps the best pure hitter that ever lived in Tony Gwynn. More importantly, he was a great person who was respected and loved throughout the game. Thoughts and prayers go to his friends and family. It seems like with every season pieces of my childhood are passing away, but the memories live on forever.

Sad stuff. I feel privileged to have watched him play in person during the 80s

Umm...that censored word is f-u-c-k right?

Terrible and shocking news. Do we know if it was the cancer that got him?

He also had one of the most unique voices I've ever hear. Loved listening to him talk about baseball.
