Trade Deadline/Rumors thread

@BNightengale: A.J. Pierznyski staying put in Atlanta unless #Braves blown away by offer, citing his value on and off field to organization.

I think that is the Braves way of saying that no one was offering anything more than a marginal player for AJ. I don't mind this decision. The team still needs leadership, especially the young rotation. Having AJ there to handle them while a lot of these young pitchers are getting their feet wet is pretty valuable.

If all we're getting offered is trash with no value, it doesn't make any sense to deal him.

Starting to think AJ will return as our catcher next year.

If they are going to bring up young pitchers, then maybe they think AJ will be important for the new guys versus using Bethancourt. That's my take. They got more than they realized with AJ....might not be the total a-hole that others have portrayed him as.

Yes, it does, for financial benefit and for Bethancourt.

AJ is on a one year $2 million deal. He has less than a million left. The finances aren't a big deal. And we can bring up Bethancourt any time we want. Whether AJ is traded or if he's the backup catcher, we can always play Bethancourt if we wish. The reason Bethancourt is in AAA is because the Braves want him there. I'd like to see Bethancourt start the rest of the year but I'd rather see him do it with AJ there to mentor him and the pitching staff.

1) Money is money. People treated our ~$2MM savings in the Uribe/Johnson deal as great shakes, so ... $750Kish would probably garner a similar response.

2) Trading AJ forces the Braves to utilize Bethancourt (hopefully). He has nothing left to prove in AAA.

3) Mentorship is great, but you can get that from anyone.

And someone with better chops in this dept than AJ.

I'm not in favor of trading Teheran. I believe this is just a slump. I'd want a more significant piece back if he was traded than we got with Wood.

If we get an offer of any prospect with value then we should trade AJ. Doesn't have to, and probably wouldn't be, anyone ranked in a team's top 30. If I get an offer of a live arm who projects as a useful reliever, I'd deal AJ. But I doubt we're even getting that. Teams looking at AJ are probably more looking at him as a backup catcher and bat off the bench that they could get cheap. I think AJ has more value to Atlanta as a leader and handler of a young rotation than he does as bench piece for a contender. That makes a trade difficult.

I don't see the problem with AJ honestly. What is the best case scenario on the return really? Its not going to be something that moves the needle. I do think he provides veteran leadership to the young players on the team. Yes, he has had a bad reputation but we do not know the circumstances of that and what led to it. BraVES would be foolish to turn down a C+ prospect for him but I jsut doubt that will be offered.

If we do anything else, I'd like it to be for premium prospects. Like a Maybin\Teheran swap to someone that needs both. Get rid of those two great assets for a great prospect or two. Push both assets in the middle for something of very premium variety....

We just took two bottom-of-the-barrel type arms for Uribe/Johnson, I'd imagine we get one of the same (or a fringe bat) for AJ. It'd be a good deal given his age, value, contract, and the Braves would be wise to take it.

1) I wasn't one of those who thought our savings in Uribe-Johnson was all that great. I don't like either guy we got back in that deal and feel like we could have done better.

2) This is unrelated to whether they should trade AJ. Bethancourt is at AAA because the Braves want him there to work on his defense and game calling. If we traded AJ I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up either bringing up someone else or signing a veteran catcher to take his spot. I understand wanting to put Bethancourt in at catcher but the Braves will do that when they want. If they wanted to do it right now then having AJ isn't going to stop them.

3) You can't get mentorship from anyone. Look at last year's team. This is doubly true for catchers who have to work with the rotation. The Braves have a very, very young rotation and there was concern about Bethancourt's ability in this department. I have no problem keeping AJ for the benefit of the rotation.

In any event, we probably don't have to trade AJ today. There's a good chance he gets through waivers.
