Trade deadline thread

I'm sorry but that's just an absolute bull **** mindset to have if AA does have that. Our bullpen must be addressed at a minimum...it must...we simply do not have the arms to compete in October...it's that simple

Nightengale is not my favorite source. I think Rosenthal, Verducci, and Passan have more credibility. But who really knows what AA is thinking today

Exactly. No one ever knows...that's what makes him so effective. Every "rumor" I read I laugh! AA keeps everything close to the best. They simply do not leak.

NightenFail probably looked at this the same way I did and just assumed like I am doing. That tweet has no cred. Willing to bet on it.

That said. I still agree with him.

I mentioned it before, but it typically seems that if we are "connected" to a player, we never get that player. This statement is mainly for the deadline. I understand we got Murphy and Olson.....IMO the Olson one still came out of left field.

If we are targeting a "high leverage" reliever, I don't think it will be someone who is currently a closer. I don't think AA wants the messiness of a demoted closer mid-season. High leverage can just mean someone you'd put in with a slim lead in the 7th-9th. This is opposed to guys like Pearce Johnson who see more action when we're behind.

There are always plenty of those types out there. Justin Topa and Gabe Speier from the Mariners are having good seasons. Brad Hand's name gets tossed about too. Kenyan Middleton is putting up some nice K numbers with the White Sox. Jason Foley and Jose Cisnero with the Tigers are others. These aren't lock down relievers like some of the closers out there but they also likely wouldn't cost very much in terms of talent and would be a big upgrade over some of the guys we have out there.

Nightengale says the Braves are expected to have a quiet deadline with Fried, Wright, and Chavez returning

This statement doesn't make sense on its face. Since when would a guy like Chavez returning from an injury dictate what any team would do at the deadline? Chavez has been good for the Braves but he's a 39 year old reliever who hasn't been the picture of consistency. No team is going to forego the chance to get a high leverage arm because Chavez is returning. If anything, you're going to stockpile as much pen talent as you can.

Also, I can't imagine AA is dumb enough that he's depending on Wright to return and pitch well. You just have to assume he's done for the year and if he comes back you deal with having too much pitching then. Those kinds of problems have a way of working themselves out anyway.

Don't forget, we already need to find 3 roster spots just to fit Fried, Lee and Chavez back into the roster. So that's clearly Chirinos and Hernandez but then who else? And that's before even considering adding another pitcher from outside. So probably Heller and one of Yates or Tonkin would need to be cut if we added another reliever or starter.

Chirinos and Hernandez will get cut. Others would see DL stints to keep arms fresh and see who's the best going into the playoffs.

Lee is a shoulder problem like Wright. Same with Anderson. I think you have to go forward with the assumption that those guys aren't pitching again this year and hope you're wrong. Also, your position assumes no further pen injuries which is unlikely.

I don't think the Braves are going to pass on the chance to get a back end of the pen relievers because of hopes that Kirby Yates returns to form or that Tonkin keeps outperforming his peripherals.

Also, don't underestimate AA's willingness to play games with the disabled list.

I would like to give Heller more time to find control. But Tonkin has been way more reliable and can eat innings.

Heller would probably get cut.

While Braves checked in on Justin Verlander, they don’t appear to be very involved at the moment. They do seek pitching, however.

I don't see any way the Mets send Verlander to us. If he said he'd only accept a trade to the Braves, I think they'd choose to keep him.
