Trade deadline thread

If AA has a weakness as a GM it's that he sometimes falls in love with his own cleverness. To be fair, he spins straw into gold more often than other GMs but I think that sometimes makes him rely too much on trying to do this.

Sometimes you can find gold in the scrap heap. Other times the scrap heap guys are there for a reason. I get the feeling AA at times puts too much faith in thinking he's found a perfect piece for free only to see that guy crash and burn. The opportunity cost of this is missing out on good deals.

AA has made plenty of big trades. Iglesias, Olson, Murphy…and lots of smaller trades (Melancon, Martin, Joc, etc.). He’s plenty aggressive

No doubt. It's not like he can't do it. Just saying sometimes he tries to be too clever for his own good. If he lets the deadline pass without adding legitimate pitching, I think this would be one of those times.

These scrap heap deals are not mutually exclusive to making bigger deals. I can’t think of a time where AA went cheap and actually missed out on a real upgrade. The closest he’s come was with guys like Rosario and Ozuna, but those weren’t being cheap or clever…they were just less than good deals (maybe not even bad given all the context).

So yeah, AA has made underwhelming scrap heap deals, but I’d be willing to bet a real SP is still coming.

I think AA just waiting for the deadline. Teams get desperate to move contracts. We got Iglesias at the last minutes for Chavez.

I'm hoping he's getting a deal for a stud or two in place. The market seems to be thinning quickly though. Some teams making dumb decisions to go for it while the teams that are selling are getting more and more picked over.

I can’t think of a time he’s been “too clever”. He’s always made a move to fix a weakness

I hope you're right. Other contenders for the world series are significantly improving.

Fair to say if we get the 2021 version of Nicky Lopez we win the trade

Fair to say we win this trade even with the 2023 version (which has been with 0.6 fwar as a INF utility player with a strong glove). Getting the 2021 would represent rendering foie gras from a turd-sandwich.

Kiley McDaniel was the one who wrote about the Giants interest in Vaughn Grissom the other day. He mentioned Grissom and Lopez as two they were looking at.
